And the greatest leader Xi. Thick hair, strong grip, jade rod! We would have such a leader instead of sleeping in negotiations, rare hair, soft pickle, bad memory old Beadon. Punch!

Need to comment on an error made: Sun Li-jen is not a PLA general, he was part of the ROC forces (Nationalist), he was educated by VMI, and was part of the early publicanus vigilum legion (tax police) which were trained and equipped by the Germans. During world war 2, he was in Burma with the chinese expeditionary force (American equipment). what he wasn't a fan of is the political warfare branch (pseudo commissars) of the nationalist army that was sort of the brainchild of Chiang Ching-kuo(Chiang Kai-shek's son), and he was arrested in connection with a supposed communist spy case, which to many today seems like a made-up charge. In general, as someone from Taiwan and did his one-year service as a political warfare officer, Sun Li-jen is one of the, if not the most, decorated officer in my opinion, Chiang Kai-shek just didnt have the eye nor tolerance for someone that talented.

The British for decades have had a law in place that allows the government to “requisition” ships for military use. It was last used when Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands. One of the ships was a cruise ship. Perfect for carrying troops. One merchant vessel, the Atlantic Conveyor, though was sunk. It took down with it nearly all the heavy lift helicopters.

An amphibious landing these days would be even more difficult than back in WWII. Today there are long-range anti-ship missiles. The range of such missiles can reach all the way from Taiwan to China. Troop transport/ferry ships have no significant missile defense, and would depend on any nearby destroyers and cruisers to provide defense. Given the size of these troop transport/ferries, losing just a few of them would result in tremendous losses. Taiwan currently has some anti-ship missiles, and has recently signed agreements to obtain more. But, they seriously need to build up a larger arsenal. Also, Taiwan needs WAY more anti-air and anti-missile capabilities. I believe that any invasion by mainland China would start with a truly epic barage of long-range missiles launched from the mainland to knock out as much of Taiwan's defensive capabilities as they can, so a robust defense of Taiwan starts with robust anti-air & anti-missile capability. Combine that with robust anti-ship missile batteries, lots of sea mines, plus a bunch of anti-tank weapons, such as Javelin, to deal with any that manage to land, and Taiwan's existing land army should be sufficient to deal with any infantry that manage to land.

I’m glad I got to see you cover this topic. I work as a transporter with the US Army and the type of vessel that the transport/ferry is is a RO/RO. Roll on roll off. They are great for moving a lot of equipment at once but they are very slow and big targets. If they make the journey across successfully and put the ramp down at the berth, that’s where they’d be at the biggest risk. If a ship is sunk at the berth that can really slow down an invasion because these vessels typically need infrastructure to offload onto. Anyways that’s my little piece I could contribute. Can’t wait to see the next video!

I think that D-Day and the Pacific theater as a whole makes a lot of people underestimate how much of a logistical nightmare amphibious invasions really are. It was a _monumental_ effort to land all the people The Allies did on French beaches and on the bajillion tiny islands throughout the Pacific, and basically up to the day it became clear that it had actually worked basically everyone was scared shitless about it and there were a decent number of detractors (some quite famous, high-ranking figures amongst them) who thought that it wouldn't work and that we were just sailing all of our forces to their deaths. Now take into consideration that this would have to be done as an _actual invasion force_ to annex Taiwan and not as a liberating force to eject an occupying force that was hated by the civilian population and the problems become even worse for the invaders. When the allies invaded France, they did so without having to _really_ deal with the civilians behind their lines taking potshots at their soldiers and sabotaging their supply lines or even openly revolting. They mostly had the full support of the French people behind them (I'm _sure_ there are a handful of stories about the opposite happening or German plants being left behind to try and cause problems, but these would be the exception and not the rule). This is the same kind of problem that the Allies in the Pacific Theater were wrestling with leading up to the invasion of the Japanese mainland. Now, the Japanese back then were an _especially_ vicious defensive force to be reckoned with due to _deep_ cultural beliefs and ruthless disregard for international laws of warfare, but even so that just puts them at the higher (highest?) end of that estimated rate of occupiers to occupied. But the losses that they were expecting on both sides would have been atrocious, and this would have been with an invading force that was far, _far_ better supplied than the defenders and with many more troops in much better fighting shape. This is the kind of math you have to look at when you are trying to put the decision to drop nuclear bombs on Japanese cities into perspective. Or, hell, even just firebombs. Tokyo arguably suffered much more devastation from conventional firebombs (can't remember if it was actually napalm, yet, or some older form of incendiary. It didn't really matter, because Japanese buildings at the time were _super_ vulnerable to fire), the advent of nuclear weapons just meant that the Allies only had to slip one bomber last Japanese air defense rather than fleets of aircraft to do the same amount of damage. The early nukes had more of a logistical and psychological edge than an actual destructive capability advantage in this situation. But the point is that The Allies were looking for _any_ alternative to a full-blown invasion because they knew that invading was going to be pure horror for everyone involved. The other thing about invading an island that a lot of people don't talk about is what you do after you take over. You can't just take over a place like Taiwan and then just have business continue as normal. They're an island nation that is _heavily_ dependent on _imports_ to survive. The population of Taiwan will _fucking starve to death_ without a constant stream of imported food. And then the supply chain problems will start immediately. I'm sure Taiwan has _some_ natural resources, but they absolutely don't have the metal and oil resources required to keep their manufacturing and basic infrastructure running. Invading a place like Taiwan would _necessarily_ cause destruction to things like ports, railways, roads, airports, and other basic infrastructure required to keep everything running. Not to mention all of the private sector things that would be disrupted. Things like business contracts and supply lines would be thrown into chaos, causing Taiwanese businesses to either have to cut back operations severely or leave Taiwan, and foreign businesses would almost certainly cut ties to Taiwan and establish ties to companies in other countries just due to the uncertainty that they will either receive Taiwanese exports or that anything they sell to the Taiwanese will ever be received or paid for. So the Chinese at the _bare minimum_ will need to have plans and the capability to keep the Taiwanese fed and hydrated for the short to medium term, and then for the long term will need to have plans for what to do with the completely devastated economy of Taiwan that they inherit after they put down the immediate resistance street fighting. Oh, yeah, and also the Chinese will need to do all of that while also having their own economy become completely devastated by the rest of the world slashing economic ties with them at the same time. I don't think it would be as dramatic as how Russia has been cut off from the rest of the world, just because so much of the world's economy is so heavily reliant on Chinese manufacturing and they quite literally _can't,_ but I do think that the rest of the world would start hastening efforts ready in motion to end or reduce industrial reliance on China. We've already seen a wake-up call for why being too heavily reliant on Chinese manufacturing is dangerous in the wake of the pandemic, and we've seen governments and private companies alike start shifting production out of China. I think we would see this same movement accelerate, and rather than having ties just cut outright like with Russia, what we would see is companies suddenly announcing plans to build new factories outside of China and governments offering huge tax credits and subsidies for companies to build new domestic factories. It might not be as sudden, but the impact will _still_ cause China's logistical problems to swell as their coffers start drying up on top of everything else. Oh, and think about how mass unemployment and economic ruin is likely to destabilize a communist society. We've seen before that oppression + economic growth and (relative) prosperity _can_ work and be stable, but oppression + economic stagnation and collapse can very quickly lead to angry mobs and heads on pikes. North Korea is about the only communist country to pull it off, but I'm not sure that the Chinese people would ever put up with that level of state cruelty and poverty after experiencing the last few decades of relative freedom and opportunity. I know China is already a nightmare society to the western mind, but honestly it's not even a difficult choice if you hold a gun to my head and tell me I have to choose whether to move to China or North Korea. I'm pretty sure I could at least keep my head down, _survive,_ lead a _reasonably_ happy life in parts of China if I had to. But North Korea? Gun to my head you tell me to move to North Korea and I think I would just lunge for the gun and take my chances. And if we start trying to impose the Chinese system on Taiwan, while that same Chinese system is also deteriorating economically (which is even worse when you consider that Taiwan has a pretty ridiculously high standard of living already) which means that the Chinese government is almost certainly having to crack down extra hard as it is, and I'm not sure how that could be stable. And I'm not sure how stable it would be for the Chinese mainland, either. Totalitarian regimes have a tendency to seem a lot more stable to the outside world than they actually are, because we don't get to see all of the internal problems that may be tearing them to shreds until _after_ the state collapses and classified information starts getting picked through.

didnt read everything ha, to add or re-state, but yeah thats why Japanese military didnt surrender after the first atomic bomb, cause it was the same devastation as normal bombardments but just in one bomb, so it made no difference in their eyes the end result. and from US military generals, China doesnt have enough naval support to mount even a small amphibious invasion, even if USA wanted to invade Taiwan is near impossible. thats why islands usually dont get conquered throughout history with similar military superiority, its near impossible, especially to the main capital island.

Same with airlifts. The US and British combined had the largest sea and airlfit capacity in human history and carried out a massive disinformation campaign, the Nazis made plenty of mistakes and had horrible intel (many of their spies were double agents for the allies and Soviets), and since they were invading formerly allied territory they had tons of intel on the area and still got lucky and that all took years of planning. Plus theres the bonus that most of France was opposed to the Nazis so the area was filled with spies and partisans. Not to mention the fact the Nazis werent sure where the Allies were going to attack and thought an assault could happen anywhere from the Netherlands to France's western coast. Not to mention the fact the Nazis were stretched thin defending that wide of an area, were dealing with partisans across Europe, and were throwing men into the massive meat grinder called the eastern front... Meanwhile China has few allies or spies in Taiwan, the US and their allies watch China like a hawk, the Chinese cant really hide troop movements or anything, Taiwan is a tiny island, and there are only a few good landing spots and there are only a few times a year where an invasion would work with the tides and weather. Even outside of troop landing ships you need massive amounts of supplies, ships to protect those landing craft, you need armor to support them, and you need air dominance over the area. It's not just a ferry ride across the water from China to Taiwan and if you airlift men in you need to worry about air defenses and police/soldiers just gunning the men down from the ground or surrounding them before they even touch down. That all takes tons of planning which means every country in the region will know about the attack beforehand and will prepare. The US, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, and South Korea will definitely get involved, likely NATO will send support, the Philippines will probably get involved, and it's likely that India would take the opportunity to kick China while their back is turned. Meanwhile few countries if any would be aiding China as North Korea and Laos are unable to help and Vietnam is likely to remain neutral at best.

I love the humor on this channel. Those random meme graphics must take forever to insert. One aspect I think wasn't covered however was the focus on China's land army. Their geopolitical intent does involve some naval interests (particularly the string of pearls to secure maritime trade routes), but their central focus has always been on securing and expanding the land around their core. From parts of Russian Siberia to Mongolia, from Central Asia to India, to Southeast Asia, those are the areas the Chinese military is designed to go after if they deem it necessary. The proverbial 'land war in Asia', which was once thought inconceivable.

Can attest. Chinese American. Lets just say some years ago a family member was a little lost and unemployed, he somehow got into a desirable branch of the military through connections. They even maneuvered him to the equivalent of officer candidate school for better treatment and living conditions. This guy almost failed out of high school, likely with undiagnosed ADHD. I forgot how much $ they spent sending him there. Not to say that he represents the entirety of the Chinese military, but this kind of practice is still common. He left the military after couple years and went on to become a line cook for Pizza hut in one of the large cities.

The US military is far from perfect, I saw insane decisions like letting high school dropouts that could barely read (no exaggeration) into the military during Vietnam and the worst parts of the War on Terror, but those are often very temporary and almost solely affect the lowest level of enlisted men and not officers or NCOs. I know that China has had issues in the past with the military being more of a political or business organization than military, they used to own their own civilian companies and officers used their position to get partial ownership of business in return for favors. Not to mention the fact many officers are promoted more based off political connections then merit or experience. He's unlikely to be representative of Chinese officers as a whole or even generals specifically but an infamous example of the bizarre political based decisions in the military was the promotion of Mao Xinyu from the position of professional historian and amateur poet to Major General in the PLA because he's the grandson of Chairman Mao, and his mom had a similar story going from working on military encyclopedias and working as a photographer to being promoted to Major General in the PLA after marrying oen of Mao's sons.

So China would employ all of their civilian maritime transport to a costly invasion of Taiwan? What happens to their economy when people can't move around and no goods are moved that way? What happens when the US and allies blockade China from fuel and food imports? They are not even remotely self sufficient and it's part of the reason they are play the role of the new colonizers in Africa, etc. And domestically, China is far from rock solid. Their demographics already require most young people to support two older parents. They don't have a social safety net. If those young people are gone or if tens of thousands die, it would be disastrous for their society.

@@christiandelao2547 Annnnnddddd, we see how well that is working in Ukraine, Russia has lost an astronomical number of tanks. By all measures Russia's armored capability was far better than China's. Also large scale armored doctrines don't work so hot for amphibious landings and fighting in rugged mountainous terrain like Taiwan. Russia's mass armored pushes are failing even in the wide open plains of Eastern Ukraine. China will have to rely heavily on missile strikes in the opening phases of an invasion, and Taiwan is carefully studying Ukranian tactics so they will know how to minimize the damage these missiles strikes will do to their combat capability. And Taiwan's air force can probably fend off the PLAAF long enough for the USAF/USN to get sufficient massed air power in range to assist with the defense.

So, I'm pretty impressed by the thoughtful analysis of the situation as presented here...lot's to think about and lot's I hadn't considered. One other interesting angle I read about was China's "one child" policy, in that when you are only aloud to have one child you tend to be pretty protective of them (especially boys in China), so if too many precious children come home in body bags you can expect some push-back of some type from some very angry and hurt Chinese parents. It's more political than military but that's how internal change often happens and it's something the Chinese government is no doubt aware of and concerned about.
@arthas640
@arthas640 Жыл бұрын
I think that's one of the reasons China has been terrified of real military engagements since their invasion of Vietnam. There was serious push back even when China recently tried sending more men to the border with India. The CCP knows they have an uneasy agreement with the citizens: they'll put up with tin pot dictators, inequality, repression, and corruption but only so long as it guarantees them stability and increased prosperity. With Confucian influence they also tend to put a stronger influence on family, especially family lines (there are plenty of east Asian families that trace their genealogy back centuries or millennia with Confucious's family line detailed from today back 2500 years) and they mainly put the importance on sons rather than daughters too. To make matters worse for China they tend to rely mainly on children and grandchildren to take care of elders rather than charities or the state, even in some highly developed countries like South Korea where if they dont have kids to take care of them the elders often end up working well past retirement age to make ends meet, and China's retirement and investment systems are unreliable, which is why many choose to invest overseas or in real estate. In any culture losing young men is hard but for a country like China even the idea of seeing combat sends some families into panic and long term could be more harmful as not only is there the typical societal and economic issues but it also essentially destroys families, destroys retirement plans, and makes their demographic issues much worse.

What Was Missed in the Analysis: 1) China gets all of it's non-Russian non-NATO gas and oil from a single naval chokehold that is part of the first island chain. This gap is so small that it was found that a SINGLE submarine would be able to completely deny China oil throughout the entire war. If that is cut off the CCP will have to rely on strategic reserves which will be prime targets with all NATO aligned countries in the region, including India, able to strike these fixed structures. As for the Russian oil: that is also a fixed target just like their reserves and it isn't entirely inconceivable that NATO would be able to strike it too. Although Russia does ship some oil by sea, again, that has to pass the first island chain at a very narrow chokepoint. They could attempt to reroute all convoys to larger chokepoints, but that would be subjecting them to the entire might of the US navy as that would be out of China's reach entirely. 2) China is a net importer of food that also travels through the first island chain chokepoints. 3) China is a net importer of fertilizer that also travels through the first island chain chokepoints. 4) China is a net importer of coal. If a war breaks out they immediately deindustrialize. 5) China might choose to invade Taiwan anyway because Xi has been terrified of COVID and so he's isolated himself. It took over 3 months for him to realize that blackouts were occurring due to criminal negligence and corruption; the people that lead to the blackouts might not be alive anymore, Xi use to have far quicker reaction times. This may be recovering, but China's congress is actually set to vote him out of office because the opposition, who want war with Taiwan even more than Xi does, seem to have rallied enough support to oust him. Xi might be an ally in disguise; the alternative could genuinely be worse. You didn't really go over just how many governments highly regard the First Island Chain policy. It's not just the US that regards it as absolute doctrine; Japan has stated that a China that breaks free of the First Island Chain is a China that is an existential threat to Japan.

Right, it's actually the Taiwanese army that's mostly conscripts. Conscription on the mainland exist pretty much only in name. I think high schoolers/graduates have to do a few weeks of military training before attending college, and that's about it.

China has a massive militia plus some units like the People's armed police are virtually trained and armed to military standards. China's actual ground force is ALOT larger than the frontline army. This is something people do not understand. China has NEVER relied on the PLA for everything, The PLA is the armed wing of the Communist party but the potential forces that China can deploy is far more vast.

I love when he references corruption being a factor. Boy, aren't we the kettle calling that black. Have you seen the defense contractor industry in the US. I worked in that business for 6 years and got an up-close look at how big defense contractors treat the DoD like a cash register. But the DoD owns a big chunk of the problem as they created the bureaucracy that vacuums up about 1/3 of every taxpayer dollar. PS. Love your youtube stuff. Keep doing great work Cappy!

Really good video, though just 1 correction - Japan is in the north of the East China Sea. It is not is SE Asia. The countries mentioned are all being targeted though. I agree that invasion is unlikely but cutting countries off from the USA with airforce and navy is a concern. This is why they were trying to get access to the South Pacific (which thankfully said no this time) except Solomon Is which said yes to “security” based being established. If this includes an airbase They will cover a long way south. The problem, as you described well is I can’t get non-sensationalised information regarding these bases and it is hard to work out their true intentions without it. Thanks for your research and unbiased presentation of information though mate.

Just to add on... a military amphibious invasion is THE hardest operation any military could be asked to conduct. China would not have any element of surprise, since the build-up would take several months at a minimum. Weather across the Taiwan strait is unpredictable enough that there are really only two month in the year where such an operation could be attempted. There are only a handful of beaches in Taiwan where a landing could be attempted, and if you make it off those beaches, you're facing mountains with a lot of trees providing excellent cover for small teams of defenders with Stingers, Javelins, and drones. To say nothing of the challenge of just getting across the Taiwan strait--sitting ducks for missiles, and hey, how exactly can you tell what country's submarine fired at you?

In your knowledge and experience, how would this translate to if a war was to break out. Regardless of who is doing the attacking. As someone who has zero experience in this, all I can think of is Mike Tyson’s famous phrase about having a plan till you get punched in the mouth. It would be amazing if you could make a video for us noobs explaining a bit about it! Cheers

There is a historical drama call Towards the Republic, which is about of the fall of the Qing dynastry. I remember in one scene, the head of the chinese military went to an ammunition depot to inspect the shells that would be used for an upcoming naval battle with Japan. Instead of finding crates full of ammunition for their battleships, he found the crates were full of rocks. Being a drama, it is hard to know if that really happened, but at the very least it was dramatization of the problems that China had with corruption even back then.

As a Brit I'm often frustrated at how few discussions of a potential war over Taiwan refer to the Falklands war, which seems the most recent conflict that would be similar (near peers fighting over an island close to the weaker one). In that war civilian ships were repurposed as troop transports as well! Might be worth checking out how that ended up.

The thing that seems to be missing in your analysis for troop transports is that it wouldn't be entirely dependent on sea travel. If they achieve air superiority for any length of time they'll be able to ferry in troops by air. Not that this means they can just go on in tomorrow, just thought it was worth mentioning.
@benanders4412

Ya, it's kinda asking for trouble when you simply assume the enemy is not capable. Wouldn't surprise me if china suddenly pulls 1000 troop transport planes out of some dark hole. Or if Russia and or other countries would suddenly join in the operation. That would suddenly drastically change the situation. And who even says they have to invade. They can simply bomb the microchip factories. See how long the West will keep it's interest when those are gone.
