That’s the idea. China takes a step further, get the people used to the current situation, then takes a step further in a few months, repeat. By 2035, you will have a high speed rail road connecting Taiwan and the mainland and Taiwanese freely going about their businesses under semi-Chinese control. Then after a while the Taiwanese will realize that working with the Chinese is not all that bad and gets them richer, and bang, reunification with no set date and time, it just happens slowly and smoothly.

They seem to have their hearts set on invading Taiwan, so unless someone can move Taiwan to the Asian mainland, an amphibious invasion is what they'll have to do, and they seem to be developing their armed forces in that direction. It seems they're trying to get to where they could pull it off, even if the US joins the war on Taiwan's side. If we don't want that war, we'll have to give Taiwan whatever it needs to keep an amphibious invasion impossible.

true. id start to get worried if china actually began intervening in smaller wars, but for now i think they're essentially a large north korea just trying to flex their muscles, but unlike north korea they are massive trading partners with the west, and both our economies depend on each other heavily. i think if anything china's biggest threat is from within, with their extreme authoritarianism, slowing economic growth, speratist movements, and aging population, and that this whole taiwan thing just serves as a great distraction from these issues.

Taiwanese here. Let's get things straight: The PLA response was a show for the CHINESE people, not Taiwanese. China is distracting its populace from INTERNAL issues, including a slowing economy, endless covid lockdowns, and a troubled banking system. They drummed up patriotism to convince the public that those "temporary" issues should be overlooked for the good of the nation. That's mostly why Taiwanese aren't all that concerned. China isn't ready to fight, and while flying missiles over the island or sending planes/ships look intimidating, China didn't actually do anything material (as expected), and threats quickly petered out. China was really exposed as the paper tiger they are, as they aren't really ready for any sort of military escalation, and everyone knows it.

@@Jor0716 Invading Taiwan would require an amphibious landing the scale of which has never been seen in this world. China would first need to demonstrate that they have the hardware to operate on that scale, and then they'll need to spend likely months gather and distributing the logistical supplies. It's not something that can do in a matter of days, under the guise of an "exercise". There are only two types of real threat Taiwan might face in at least the next 5 to 10 years: A saturated missile attack, or a naval blockade. The former is arguably more feasible, but doing so doesn't really bring China any closer to taking the island. The latter will mean disrupting logistics along the Chinese coast, and draw the ire of APAC countries -- and there is no guarantees that that will bring China any closer to taking the island either. I can't say whether if they won't, but as of now, they truly don't have the power to invade. A failed invasion will be far more devastating to CCP rule than doing nothing at all, so I can't see it happening unless CCP is in a dire situation, and their calculation shows that they're so close to losing control of the country that attacking Taiwan is worth the risk.

We know now that they can fly minimum 22 5th Gen fighters at once. That can let us estimate their reserves. We saw that they group together all their armor close together once deployed making for easy targets. We saw they weren’t serious as they didn’t evacuate any costal cities. Plus a lot of things I’m not smart or equipped enough to see. This is priceless info.

You may think that refusing to visit Taiwan would not lead to an escalation of the situation, but this is not so, in my opinion. Xi Jingping intends to stay for another term and he needs to "legitimize" (as dictatorships understand it) his power, especially against the backdrop of a falling economy. And the war of Russia against Ukraine is not accidental here, China has been violating the airspace of Taiwan since the first days of the invasion of Ukraine. It should be understood that the policy of appeasement does not work for totalitarian dictatorships. It happened with Hitler, when they gave away part of Czechoslovakia, it happened with Putin, when they responded to the annexation of Crimea and the occupation of Donbass with sluggish sanctions. You should understand that the aggressor understands only the language of power and the only thing that can stop him is its demonstration.

@@janusjones6519 We can de jure consider that Taiwan is the territory of China, although we could just as well consider de jure China to be the territory of Taiwan, because both of them do not recognize each other. It's just that China has a larger territory, population, military power and economic influence on the world, so we have to reckon with it. But in the event of its invasion of Taiwan, this will escalate into a massacre in which almost all of the military and civilian infrastructure of the island will be destroyed, and most of the inhabitants will be exiled to camps or executed. With a population of 23 million in Taiwan, the United States will either have to evacuate refugees or admit its helplessness. Next, China will turn its attention to the escalation in other parts, where they are actively building their military bases and the world will prepare for a new round of tension.

One thing I think everyone needs to keep in mind at all times when taking about this sort of thing is that it doesn't matter what the USA is or is not doing. Unless the United States actively assists China with subjugation of Taiwan the way they've subjugated Hong Kong, China will find out create any reason at all to play the outraged victim. The US shouldn't even consider if something will provoke the displeasure of the CCP because that displeasure isn't genuine. It is performative, and completely illogical. We can't base policy decisions on fake, unpredictable outrage because of We do that, China simply lowers the threshold at which they pretend to be the victim until the day where we stand by and let them shackle a valuable ally because we're afraid they might get upset.

I disagree with a lot of positions that Speaker Pelosi has advocated, but her support for Taiwan is NOT one of them. I am disappointed that the WH & POTUS sent a mixed message by not openly endorsing her trip, as I'm disappointed that she did not bring any representatives from her opposing party to demonstrate a unified stance towards China. When is it OK for a US Congressman to visit Taiwan? Never, according to China. When is it OK for a USN vessel to transit the Taiwan Strait? Never, according to China. When is it OK for the US to sell defensive weapon systems to Taiwan? Never, according to China. If the US and Speaker Pelosi had chosen to appease China, would global conditions suddenly improve? No. Just take a look at Hong Kong and you'll see a grim future for Taiwan. Fuck the PLAN and Xi JingPooh. @thomasromanelli2561
@thomasromanelli2561 Жыл бұрын
@@Dept246 No, it's really not, for the same reason if China wanted to establish a naval base or other installation on Cuba. One of the only effective responses to China's prodigious shipbuilding program is to frustrate their ability to establish logistical infrastructure. The fact that both US and UK assets have recently been denied a port call for resupply by the Solomons (which is a significant departure from our long-established relationship with the Solomons) is indicative of China's intent to displace its rivals by economic pressure on the local government. If China were to renounce the possibility of military force to ensure reunification with Taiwan, perhaps there would be a more positive reception to their regional expansion.

Always a brilliant insight on military logistics and thinking... I would like to add that from a strategic POV I think the USA did a very smart move by sending the speaker of the house, as it was the right weight political personality and a woman. Two things here as you mentioned the learning curve of what and how China responds in an aggressive way is immensely valuable information. But the strategy of it all is brilliant. One person sent by the USA is enough to scramble an army, airforce and navy etc.... but the real statement is. China prefers to keep its number one trading partner over Taiwan ... if I read this correctly, that is the Geo Political POV as it stands today....

Don’t be alarmed. China slices it’s cake one step at a time. Regardless of how it may sound, this prevents ambiguity and adds reassurance to those who deal with China and it prevents chances of a sudden miscalculation which might lead to a war. You might think the Chinese spokesperson was boring for repeating the same condemnations or threats towards the US over certain actions, but that’s precisely because the US are repeating the same actions. Giving a solid feedback to a certain stimulus again improves certainly and prevents miscalculation. I say that’s very professional.

Actually strategic ambiguity helps prevent conflicts. Say you are a bully and have two kids you want to pick on. One tells you "if you pick on me, I might go tell the teacher or my parents, or put dog poop in your hair." The other tells you "you can slap me or ruin my books and I won't go to the teacher, but if you punch me or touch my sweater I will go to the teacher." What do you do? You slap the kid you know won't go to the teacher, throw his books in the garbage. And after a while, you take scissors to his sweater because how dare he set rules for you. But you don't mess with the maybe kid because you don't know how he will react.

Kuwait is getting new SuperHornets & Eurofighter Typhoons, which means its 1992 F/A-18 are available (32C, 8D). These are late model with all the option boxes ticked & kept in tip top condition. These could replace Taiwan's F-5E. Its like giving Taiwan the firepower of an aircraft carrier airgroup.

The CCP has internal strifes of it's own. The faction opposed to Xi Jinping controls the internal security aparatus, which has a bigger budget than the PLA. More likely it ends up with Xi ousted or a vivil war in China than WW3.

China is not collapsing economically. It is experiencing an economic crisis. These happen in plenty of countries, like the US financial crisis, the European sovereign debt crisis, the Japanese real estate bubble, etc, without resulting in the "collapse" of the economy. Even if it were, it would mean nothing to the CCP's grasp on power. Maduro and Assad's economies are in far, far more dire straits than China's, yet they're both still in power despite years and years of hard work by America and the far weaker conditions of their respective countries. Chinese doomerism is baseless cope.

@@anon6000 liquidating US bonds for pennies on the dollar is a pretty desperate move on their part. A local bank run almost triggered a second Tiananmen, imagine what a sovereign liquidity crisis would trigger. The thing about autocrats is that when shit goes tits up, there's nobody else for the people to blame their woes on, but you.

Way I see it, this is *mostly* a win. China is a culture of face, it is pretty much the most important thing, especially to the Communist Party... and they just lost face so massively that there's even a trend on Weibo of people hurting themselves because they feel so utterly ashamed of their country for *not* shooting down Pelosi's plane or invading Taiwan. And operation Fishkill isn't fixing that, in the slightest. China is a communist dictatorship, the entire regime survives off propaganda and control. And this is a big loss of both in a time that the CCP really can't afford it. That said, it's very dangerous that China is getting away with a de facto temporary blockade, and I don't know if the US just sailing its fleet through as a show of force is enough to reverse it like last time. China is on a timer, if it does not invade Taiwan soon, it very well might never be able to. This feels like something pushing the CCP even more to actually do it, and that's not goof, but at the same time, forcing them to do it when they aren't ready might be what saves Taiwan. It's hard to say. But a full naval blockade to me seems like a suicidal tactic, since it keeps ships occupied needed for an invasion and - if the US steps in - incredibly vulnerable to get sunk, and decisively so. But time will tell

China is not a culture of face. Pragmatism is at the centre of its philosophy. The concept of 'face' is a social concept only matter in day to day situation where not only China, but all East Asian countries shares similarities with (a Confucius thing). This is geopolitics we are talking, and no1 cares about 'face'

@@skislope4218 it's unclear if it's a dictatorship as we don't know how much power Xi really has within the party. But sure on the surface it does look like it. But been a dictatorship doesn't mean 'face' is everything. China in it's 5000 years of recorded history never had this 'face' thing you westerners keeps talking about been at the centre of anything.
