Chris is like those kids who watch too much KZbin and think "like and subscribe" is the same as "good bye", he's been raised by TV and mainly cartoons leading to him thinking that just what communication is.

@Lassi Kinnunen 81 to be fair I was over simplifying, Chris never fully took in the positive messages in cartoons even if he will repeat them, but the lesson he did take in was "buy our toys". Barb and Bob both let him live as a child and that was fake friends, cartoons and toys with no responsibility.

I think Chris puts the adverts in because when he watches tv he just sees the fact that there are moments where a “celebrity” breaks the 4th wall and says something about a product, so he writes his character breaking the 4th wall saying something about a product. He’s putting it in because he thinks “that’s what a comic has” It’s there “because that’s what you do”.

I thought the same thing. Comics on store shelves have ads, so he probably thought his needed them too. Even if he didn't understand why they were there. He probably thought it was the comic maker promoting things they liked, so he had to promote shit he liked or resonated with.

I think Chris understands what an advertisement is, however I feel like being advertised to is a very exciting thing to him. When he advertises something he gets quite animated and excited, he does squeaky voices and plays with toys and/or has humorous music playing, you can see him light up. When you think about how many giant sets of toys, legos, figures etc he's bought over the years, I think what must happen is he's watching his shows and ads come on, he's already in a good mood, and suddenly he's shown this huge amazing thing that he REALLY wants. Because he has a past of actually buying the things he wants (or getting them 'donated') the rush that he must get when he thinks there's a very real chance he can buy it must be insane. The excitement for a product is one of the strongest driving forces I've seen in his life - He'll suddenly offer services, make art, go through what he can sell, get Barb to make a sad plea for help or just beg himself to get some money, usually under the guise of an emergency.

I think that he was poorly socialized and it was supplemented with tv. He probably understands that he’s been advised to but he doesn’t recognize that it’s not part of a normal conversation since he mostly references tv on how to speak and act like when he dramatically takes off his glasses or how his movements are cartoonishly exaggerated in his videos. He just thinks that’s how you recommend something.

What a lot of people, including those who hate on Chris for his/her actions, fail to understand is that due to whatever other mental health condition Chris has that has somehow never been diagnosed, Chris understands & percieves things very differently from people who are normal or people who are just autistic and are, unlike Chris, actually on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum(like me), and is incapable of seeing that he/she has certain problems and has delusions. What to someone like me or a non-autistic person would be disgusting, indecent, or inappropriate, is not seen that way by Chris. For example, that drawing Chris made of him/her fingering his/her former friend Megan, and uploaded to the internet. Plus, Chris truly has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old child. Maybe, even a 6-year-old child. These issues combined with Chris not getting the special needs education he/she needed as a child, and all of the trolling towards him/her have resulted in the person we see today. The only hope for Chris is he/her having consistent psychiatric treatment.

The basic issue now is Chris has been lied to so much that his view of fantasy and reality have been blurred. I work with a few people who are in Chris’s mindset that think the movie Titanic, while based on a real event, think that Rose and Jack were very much real and the necklace is at the Titanic sight. You can explain over and over that these things aren’t real and show them the fact but they’ll fall back to the idea they originally had. Chris at some point yes, knew the difference between reality with advertising because we see that when he won the contest so many years ago, but now because of his mental state appearing worse, people have taken advantage of this and now he believes fantasy and reality are one and the same.

Personally, I've always thought that Chris viewed brands as his "friends," rather than a company that is merely trying to sell him something. Consider how he'd purchased anything he could get his hands on from video game brands he likes, even DLCs for games he didn't have. It reminds me of someone doing something to support a friend, if that makes sense.

It's not uncommon for people on the spectrum to struggle with telling the difference between what's real and what's fake, it's why Chris has and will always continue to fall for trolls too. I think the fault (like so many other faults) lie with Bob and Barb not having a more structured system within and outside of school. I don't want to say they gave up on him, because I know Bob did make an effort, but at his age and with his health, of course he could only do so much. Another thing too, is he's been eating garbage and living in moldy houses with god knows how much animal waste for almost 40 years. Even a neurotypical person's mind would unravel under those conditions.

I think Chris can recognize the *pattern* of what an ad sounds or reads like, just like how Chris can recognize the *pattern* of what a Family Guy cutaway gag sounds like. That isn't necessarily the same thing as being able to understand what contexts it's appropriate to actually use an advertisement in, much less that the information in an ad is designed to sell the product rather than to be a factually accurate description of the product.

I think Chris put 'ads' in the comics because actual, published comics have ads, and he probably thought his comic was suppose to have ads, and those were just some he knew and liked. As for the Twitter posts, it seems like he believe he has a bigger fan base than he does, and are telling them to watch this episode because he likes it, so his fan base, of course, will too. It really seems like he sees ads as things people like and are showing to others, not as something they are trying to sell.

I actually have what I think is an interesting take on this. I think Chris can tell the difference (or at least could, I can't speak to his mental state now after how badly his sanity has diminished) and knows what he's doing when he puts fake ads in Sonichu. You hear people in the Vaporwave community talk about "aesthetic" a lot, and the way they use it they mean using imagery and recognizable iconography to emulate and evoke the emotions and memories associated with certain time periods, a culture or something similar to that. This kind of thing is actually much older than Vaporwave. You see throwback movies and tributes to genres/styles as far back as the 1970s, and maybe even further. It's kind of the same idea behind a renaissance fair, where you're feeling like your in a simulation of a certain time or a certain feeling. This is why Chris put ads in Sonichu even though he wasn't selling anything, and I suspect why he talks like an advertisement sometimes. He might not even be conciously aware he's doing it, but he's doing the same thing those artists are doing: he's evoking a certain aesthetic, creating an artistic expression meant to give you the same emotion/feeling that reading an old 90s comic book or Saturday morning cartoon would. While Chris definitely struggles with taking things literally and seperating fantasy from reality, I think in this case he's a bit more clever than you're giving him credit for. So that's my take on it: maybe the reason he talks like a commercial is because talking that way is soothing or comfortable to him, and he knows he's doing it.

I think the real key factor with the advertisements in the Sonichu comics is that he's not approaching them as advertisements but as a form of coding. 90s and early 00s comics had tons of adverts for the Got Milk campaign. By emulating the advertisements he's focusing on the key factors that he recognizes as comic books. That's why that specific campaign feels out of place because it doesn't reflect his personal viewpoints, it reflects the identity of the medium he's emulating.

On the advertising point: Chris’s attitude with advertising reminds me of my friends and I when we were kids really into downhill skiing. We’d cover all our shit with brand stickers because that’s what the pros did! Pros had brand deals and sponsorships all over their gear and we wanted to look like them. We didn’t really get that it’s all just advertising, even if we did it didn’t matter. We were doing it to appear better/more serious/more legitimate than we really were. That’s what Chris does, place advertisements into his work to make it look more serious than it is.

This was an interesting video. As somebody with Asperger's (thus much higher-functioning than Chris), I always knew the difference between what's an ad and what's not, but I understand a lot about the perspective of consuming a lot of fiction and expecting things to happen in your life (e.g. expecting a significant other to come because that's what fiction says). As an example of the latter point, there's a documentary called Life Animated which involved a young autistic man (slightly lower-functioning than Chris) that was mute as a kid and learned a lot like how to read from Disney movies. He graduates from a special school that prepares disabled adults to live on their own and maintain a job and he goes on to live with his girlfriend (also autistic) in an apartment in an assisted living community. After his brother gives him a talk about french kissing and sex his girlfriend breaks up with him because he got too touchy-feely with her. He gets upset about this because from watching Disney movies his whole life he expected her to be with him forever because many Disney movies have happily-ever-after endings once a couple kisses and falls in love. They eventually remain friends though.

The term that keeps popping into my head is "Cargo cult"... Where you emulate something superficially in the hopes of sparking something genuine. Apparently derived from a story of tribesmen who tried to build airport looking things in the hopes that planes would land there and deliver/sell them stock - possibly because of an actual event that took place and the wish to bring it about again.

Everything Chris has done has been a reaction to something he’s seen in some sort of media. His comics are an amalgamation of Disney stories, Japanese animation and video games. It’s why none of his stories are original and he always pulls weird tropes from other obscure media, he thinks his audience won’t notice. Chris is the omnipresent version of that kid in school who walked around telling jokes they heard from movies/shows/standup and trying to pass them off as their own.

When my autistic son was in first grade he would repeat ads verbatim for everything and try to sell me mattresses and other things no 6 year old cares about. Being naturally charming and an excellent mimic I would be caught off guard and try to reason with him like he actually understood what he was doing, but of course he didn't. To him it was just a mesmerizing experience that he wanted to emulate. He grew out of it and now understands what advertisements are and has disdain for them (as he should) but what if my son had permissive parents that bought him everything he asked for? What if he had been praised for his skill in "persuasion" and "salesmanship"? I shudder to think of all the ways things could have gone terribly wrong.

24:54 I'm gonna take a crack at this. So, I can teach someone how to build a campfire and ignite that fire using flint and steel. I can show them how to do it, and then have them repeat what they saw me do and get the same results. But just because that person can now build and start a campfire using flint and steel, it doesn't mean they actually understand how it works, all they know is that if they do this, this and this, then campfire is the outcome. It's called "monkey see, monkey do". Just because Chris can make up advertisements and put them in his comics, it's doesn't mean he actually understands what advertisements are, he's just seen them in other comics, on TV, and in movies and thinks it's just something that is and that because it's something that is, it has to be in his comics as well. Like I said, it's a case of "Monkey see, Monkey do".

Something I learned as an autistic via therapy and textbooks is that NDs have a hard time creating 100% original things. We can be extremely creative and talented at what we make/do, but will have a hard time coming up with new ideas. The best example I can give is the cosplay community. For all its flaws, the top dogs are almost always ND and super experimental with their costumes, but can’t seem to use their formulas on original characters. When they do dress up as OCs, they always seem to allude to their main fandom. I can say this with experience as I’m a fairly popular autistic cosplayer online who is obsessed with FNaF but can’t seem to move past it no matter how abstract my characters and Cosplays get. I see something similar with Chris, as he blatantly copies what he sees, mixes them around, and attempts to make something new. Even non Sonic based content he makes has a distinct Sega flavor to it.

What this comes down to (imo) is that Chris sees advertising featuring his favorite characters as a form of expanded content, and not as an interruption. Of course, it’s tough to be definitive about anything CWC-related, but I’m looking forward to hearing where you go with this.

It seems rather unlikely that Chris has actually gone backwards as far as his actual ability to comprehend and whatnot. As silly as some of the trolling was I’m sure a lot of it was very damaging so it would be much easier for Chris to surround himself with his own fantasy world. If you’ll pay close attention Chris I’m not that different from anti social awkward people who really get into anime, video games or whatever. He’s just taking random elements of stuff he kinda likes and tries to use it in an attempt to sound smarter. The merge is almost more of a copping mechanism rather than a genuine working theory.

Chris HAS declined, no question. Really deteriorating into more delusion, which was always present. BUT, I would also say that yeah, Bob overestimated his "maturity". Chris ALWAYS had that odd cadence - seems to convey MANY thoughts, feelings, responses, etc, in sort of "triplets". There is such a format to so much of how they communicate. And it feels like... advertising - those triplets are akin to advertising copy listing qualities. It's really a part of them. (many examples, I'm not good at grabbing them off the top of my head, but so much it seems to go like ""it made me feel ____, as well as ____ and of course ____" "It crushed my soul, as well as ____, and made me _____" Not that this offers any new insight, but I often wonder, because the "advertising mindset" is legitimately such a part of them that they couldn't change it if they tried... What if Bob had not switched Chris out of Marketing and into CADD at PVCC? I know of investment firms with autistic/savant/post-mental-breakdown short-term/derivatives/tech ( i.e. complex yet very fast trades) traders who they keep on staff with some odd indulgent compensation arrangements in addition to pay (isolated office of juvenile decor, specified snacks, cartoons, collectibles - I shit you not). Could they have found a place in the advertising world coming up with copy, slogans, etc. with some firm who would tap their wording and delivery (and rework it obviously)...and do it without them being literally present for meetings of course - just for the mental health of the rest of the staff ;) Nah, who am I kidding? Still would have been too lazy even IF that perfect (for them) life presented itself...

I think Sonichu in Chris Chan's mind is like how Chris Chan would have created Sonic. Sometimes when we are attached to something like a cartoon character we look up to, we want to show the world how we see it, but the problem is that not everybody will understand. Chris once mentioned (in the Kasey Father call) that his father knows about copyright and says Chris is in the clear this whole time. IDK what Bob was thinking given that Sonic was never his idol as he was to his son, then again, it could be Chris talking out of his rear end. So yeah, Chris doesn't understand that Sonichu maybe his creation but it is not very creative. I'm surprised that Sega, Nintendo nor Game Freak took legal action against him let alone gave him a cease and desist letter of some sort for trying to profit off of Sonichu.

Chris emulates everything cause he doesn’t understand. Its like hypothetically Bob telling Chris as a child “son I’m going to teach you to be a man”Chris can’t be taught that he can only emulate Bob. Look at older CWC stuff when he tries to be intimidating he uses Bobs expressions.Remove Bob Chris takes on Barbs traits. The only other thing he knows is cartoons so as “Sonichu” he emulates a cartoon character that just happens to be his own twisted version of a cartoon on tv,but emulated to paper.

When I was a kid I never like recording commercials and I did my best at stopping the recording when there advertisement going on. When I got older I decided to continue the recordings through the commercials because I understood how historically commercials are from the pasted, because people from the future will never know what it was like in the pasted. And we are losing the 60fps in commercials because of dumbasses here on the internet that can't compromise between 59.94hz and 59.94fps interlace of video. They're all thinking 29.97fps was the only frame rate on a CRT.

GiBi, I love this video! Chris really, really likes formulas, which is why he proposes "desirable" ideas as advertisements: Axe Bodyspray, Love Quest posters, KZbin ebegging, etc. He knows that if he mimics something he likes/sees as successful, he's following a formula for success. He only sees the outcome of commercial advertisements (not understanding the science behind it) and feels that in copying them, he's able to pass along whatever message he's trying to communicate to others. But he always falls short of the goal, because the things he comes up with are out of place. He's ALWAYS trying to sell people on his ideas in everything he does--it's really apparent to me (a woman) when he communicates with women that he's trying to sell them on the idea of liking him. And there's been the argument in the LGBTQ community that he's trans because he's emulating what he desires most: women. I won't touch on that particular topic further, but it's clearly something that Christorians have noted due to his nature of needing to copy what he sees. Anyway, thanks for bringing up such a cool conversation! I can't wait to read that author's book!

Chris does get something out of advertising Mr. Plow. Chris enjoys the Simpsons and would like for it to continue. For Simpsons to continue, not that it has any issue doing so, Chris knows it needs to be successful and have people continue to view it. Chris also believes he had millions of fans, so by him advertising Mr. Plow to his "millions of fans" he is supporting his future entertainment.

Autstic person here and i would like to add something: the "mental age" thing isn't always linear or clear cut. For example someone might be able to hold conversations just fine and have high social skills, but can't do the household. For example chris can drive on his own without getting lost, but isn't able to tell reality from fiction in most cases. So it is possible that he is "16" in some areas but only the mental age of 8 in others. Me for example i am able to manage the household by myself and engage socially but i cannot drive

I think a better way to sum this up is to say Chris Chan is a Cargo Cultist for success in life. He wants to be a famous comic book artist/writer, but he has no desire (or know how) to increase his talent so he makes a replica of a comic book. He wants to make a game and have it be famous, so he constructs an advertisement that serves as a representation of his ideal game. He wants a faithful loving woman, so he creates idols from crayola markers and letter paper. This is of course talking about Classic Chris: Today's Christine is just flat out delusional IMHO.

Mental age isn't really considered scientific because most people, autistic or not, have traits that are all over the age spectrum. So it's not contradictory to say Chris has some traits that are more like a 12-year-old's and some that are more like an eight-year-old. I tend to think most of her behavior DOES fit with that 12-to-13 estimate (e.g. faking multiple personalities and weird holding metaphysical beliefs - those are super common with middle schoolers, esp. autistic ones), but again, it's not a scientific measurement.
