With a burst of optimism and positivity, the Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney and Ideas Curator, Jess Scully shares what she calls the "transformative potential of people-powered politics". Drawing on examples from around the world, Scully demonstrates why politics as usual is no longer viable and that it is time for a more nuanced and participatory approach to democracy. She argues that "the system that got us into this mess, can't be relied upon to get us out of it".
Jess Scully is a curator who uses creativity to build a sustainable and inclusive future. In 2019 she was elected as Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney.
Jess has charted a unique career over twenty years; founding ground-breaking festival Vivid Ideas, Australia’s largest creative industries event; supporting emerging talent through projects such as the Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards; undertaking structural interventions for culture as a policy advisor; transforming public space as a public art curator and telling stories as a radio host and magazine editor.
As a Councillor, Jess seeks to expand who plays a role in shaping the life of the city. She is working on reviving nightlife and supporting creative production, opening up public space for more people-first uses and advocating for new models to address the housing crisis.
Her first book, Glimpses of Utopia, was published by Pantera Press in August 2020. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

As a French citizen, let me tell you that the citizens convention on climate is a joke. President Macron said no to three propositions (the most importants ones) and while he said he would transmit other propositions to the parliament without modifications, he is actually reducting the proposals, making them insignifiant. The goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2040 drops to 2.4% by 2030, a ridiculous number. This is how we respect democracy in France 🇫🇷

The system of elected representatives is not democracy. The term democracy was coiled in ancient Greece where they had a complete different system than what is called "democracy" today. I can not explain in a few lines what it consisted of, but it had nothing to do with elected representatives and political parties.

We live under a corporate fascist system, with creepy secret doctrine? It makes me cringe when these asshats, throw the word, "democracy". The elected officials give fools a false sense of control? Just my 2 cents, I'm nobody.

Until we allow teaching children in public schools strategies to counter our tribalistic and greed/power tendencies and remain open-minded, until we teach psychology 101 to kids, we will always be cleaning up the aftermath of people not knowing how to behave and work together, instead of not being aware of their tendency to slip into "groupthink".

Australian Politics can be transformed by one small change, Remove the word Opposition, and replace it with the title Alternate Government. It would remove the nodding Dicky knee's from standing in front of TV cameras and simply opposing ideas with no plan or answer of their own, it would require them to provide an alternate idea, ideally with an alternate funding plan.

As Jess started talking I found myself disagreeing with her. Too many voices in a room and all you get is loud argument. Then she described citizen councils which has worked and made a positive contribution, and I found myself agreeing with her. Citizen Councils seems to be a good method of getting the ideas and goals of the majority put in place. We should try a Citizen Council on climate change in Australia.

This is a very interesting Tedx, I am convinced that diversity in politics and power over our own society restored to citizens will save us. However I would like to shade Jess Scully's opinion about the Climate Convention in France. It was indeed a great opportunity for a change, a real one, but the president didn't allow the laws as they were created (despite the fact that he specifically said the laws would be adopted exactly the way they were) and therefore didn't make much change. Actually, loads of people here in France are extremely frustrated and angry at this toxic government. I personally don't think working with our government is a reasonable solution to fight the urgency of climate change anymore -if it ever was.

As a French citizen and an optimistic green activist, I'm not really convinced about the citizens' convention for climate. Actually, even though the president was supposed to apply the laws voted by the citizens, he just bowdlerized it until the laws he sat up lost ALL THEIR SENSE, so now we can't reach the goal we have to reach to reduce climate change.
