BEARING FACT: Free spinning a bearing doesn't show whether it functions or not, bearings must be under load. an important factor is that when a bearing is property greased / lubed they will barely free spin but under load will function at its best. when you can free spin a bearing for a long time means that it is dry and will not work for very long in that condition. hope it helps!!
@tylergarza8695
@tylergarza8695 4 жыл бұрын
Skateboard bearings have to spin free for long times. Any drag that prevents this is shockingly noticeable while riding. They usually have very very lightweight grease or oil, which is made to function as grease normally, but also to avoid any loss in efficiency of the bearings components. Just clarifying that his "bearing fact" is entirely dependent on the application in which the bearing is used, as well as the type of bearing used. Ball bearings are made to handle high rpm and lower loads. The force of a person skateboarding is fairly low compared to other industrial applications.

If you *REALLY* want to clean your bearings here is a method that actually works: -get the seals/shields of if possible(some bearings have non removable metal seals/shields) -pour some alcohol(at least 90%) to a container for example an old drinking bottle -close the lid and shake it for 2 minutes -pour some alcohol on a towel and clean the seals/shields that you removed -your bearings will be stuck so spin them until the alcohol evaporates -use some oil based lubrication for example sewing machine oil works good or you can buy bones speed cream. -put the seals back on if some lubrication comes out you wipe it off because it attracts dirt You are finished your bearings wont roll for a long time or anything like that they will roll like they are new and they wont have any sound because of the lubrication. Lubrication helps too keep your bearings life longer but if you don't want to lubricate your bearings you can skip that step.

fastest way to clean bearings: throw them away and replace them. buy a box of 50 generic 608zz bearings from a industrial supply shop for $20 (50 cents each), even if you swap all the bearings out every 6 months (they will last way longer than that unless you're constantly doing big drops) thats still a 25 year supply of bearings.... for 20bux. i work with industrial motors and electromechanical systems and i deal with bearings every day. custom skateboard branded bearings are a scam, there is literally no difference between them and standard 608 bearings. the zz at the end just means they are double shielded to prevent debris ingress.
@acspeter6957

For wd/40: "The lubricants in products like WD-40 and Liquid Nails are so thin they can evaporate leaving bearings dry and suseptable to corrosion. These types of products are not suitable as bearing lubricantion." -acetone works fine but if it contains water it can start to rust your bearings(bearings rust anyway if you skate them) -skate bearings are not a scam if you work in a place that works with bearings you know that skate bearings have nylon ball retainers(better for horizontal impact) while industrial bearings have metal ball cages.Metal ball cages can rust bend and they can't really take impact as well.Industrial bearings are mainly designed to spin at a high RPM. Although you have a really good perspective how skate industries work... We can talk how some companies sell the same decks with different graphics for more or how they sell overpriced wax etc. My main point is that most skaters here are young kids who don't go through bearings as often as other skaters and if they try to save some money cleaning is an option for sure.

I use acetone, but later hold them in USSR tractor bearing oil for 20h. Here (Latvia) bearing cost a tone more then anywhere else. As a kid it helped me by using 3 or 5 to increase their speed much more than what the smear did that we could purchase at the local skate shops. Also it is cost effective and a bottle of 1,5l oil costs bellow 10 Euro. Now I can just purchase new RED 7's when I need to or 9's for my longboard.

If people are still going through comments here are some steps to clean bearings 1. Take your bearings off your board 2. Get a knife and pop off the plastic caps 3.get a empty Gatorade bottle 4.put wd40 in the bottle about half an inch worth 5. Put your bearings in it and shake it but not to hard 6.take them out and dry them really well with a rag 7. This step is not needed but you can do it, put rubbing alcohol in a clean bottle and repeat the steps above but instead of wd40 use rubbing alcohol make sure you dry them really well Have fun with your bearings

Doing it wrong I do this to clean my bearings The right way Let old bearings soak for a few days keep in gator aid bottle and close cap clean with rubbing alcohol then bearing lube (gator aid bottle and shake) Cola gets the rust off and the alcohol gets the soda off and because alcohol wants to be a vapor it cleans its self and the lube tops it off

Yes my bearings are full of rust I just cleaned them and they work great, the rust stayed on them thou and I have seen a bunch of videos showing Coca-Cola cleaning rust off so next time I clean my bearings I think I’m gonna try that process Soak them in Coca-Cola to remove rust Rinse them with water to remove sugar as best I can and then attempt to dry as best I can , Then go throu the whole process of cleaning them with alcohol with the bones bearings cleaning kit, the alcohol also helps remove any debri Then of course finish it off by adding some bones speed cream on there

I have always used wd40 to CLEAN bearings Scrub or rinsing them thoroughly until they are clean then i dry them (usually using pressurized air if I can and papertowels) then i re-lubricate them with tri-flow, 3 in one, or another suitable oil Usually this works really well, it cleans out all of the dirt and old oil and gets them rolling smooth again.

I just use paint thinner. Just take the caps off, put the bearings in the thinner, leave them for a minute or two, then spin a few times to loosen them up, and get the dirt out, then soak them back in for a minute and repeat until they are clean. After you can use a bit of speed cream if you wish, but even so, they should work just fine. Avoid water and of course coca cola. :)))

Baking soda and vinegar is much safer for your bearings. First I put CLP (gun cleaner, lubricant, and protectant) on the bearing and spin it for 10 minutes with the CLP on it. (you'll need to remove the shields on the bearings at this step) Be careful to not damage the shields! Next I prepare the concoction of baking soda and vinegar. Grab a brush of some sort. get the brush wet and put baking soda on the brush. Scrub both sides getting the bearing covered in baking soda. Then drop into the baking soda/vinegar solution for about 20-30 mins. Soak the bearings in water. Use compressed air after soaking them. Bam! you'll clean but won't corrode the bearings at all. this is the method I use on my fidget spinners and it works very well.

It fizzes on the bearing because the imperfect surfaces on the bearings allow a place for the carbon dioxide to nucleate where as on smooth surfaces it has nothing to "grab onto". This is also why the mentos in coke thing works but putting spree in coke does nothing. Therefore the amount of bubbles is weakly correlated to how dirty the bearings are because the dirt theoretically contributes to a rougher surface.

It fizzes on the bearing because it is a nucleation site, which basically means the bubbles have a place to form. You can notice that bubbles usually form on imperfections in the glass/cup. It's a physical reaction, not chemical, though, I don't know if the acids change that in some way.
@lordlunacy6020
@lordlunacy6020 6 жыл бұрын
The abrasiveness of the dirt and grime on the bearings act as nucleation sites for the CO2 gas (carbonation) to form and drop out of solution. for the layman, it gives the gas a place to form bubbles and the bubbles grow in size until they detach and float to the surface.

What I've used is nail polish remover (without anything to condition the skin, so it's just acetone, and a bitter agent, ) or you can buy pure acetone at a hardware store. Pry the shields out with an razor (away from the body,) pop them in a lidded jar, spin them around a bit, and wipe them with paper towels. Then I put them back in the jar, and then swirl the acetone around in a circular motion, with the bearings laying flat, causing centrifugal forces to act on them, causing the bearings to lift up and spin around in the jar. The cleaner the bearings get, the more times they'll keep spinning around along the wall of the jar once you stop swirling (this part's a bit fun actually, and sometimes I can't tell when I've stopped cleaning, and started playing). Then let them dry (don't use a hairdryer as other guides may suggest! Solvents like alcohol and acetone are extremely flammable, and will dry quickly on their own!) I then add a couple of drops of Bones Speed Cream at opposite sides of the exposed bearings, spin them in my hand, and you're done.

People use the acid in coca cola to leave pennies overnight and it takes off the tarnish, you can use it with a vinegar mix too for cleaning large copper things. The bad thing here is not only does short use make your bearings sticky and trash but if you did get it to clean with the vinegar mix your bearings would rust instantly because it would no longer have any oil or grease to keep the metal from oxidizing.

I was told by my skateshop it's best to take the shields off of your bearings at least on one side. The reason for this is yes, it does get more dirt in them if you ride in dirty places. Although they do last longer as there is ventilation for the hot air from the friction from the metals can escape. With the shields it will have a less likely chance of the bearing falling apart with more ventilation. With the bearing shields on is almost the same as having your car in the sun with the windows closed.

VossenLow Unless you are going at high speeds, it probably won't matter (and then, vented cores are better than unshielded races). Proper lubrication is a better solution, since that reduces friction. Either way, the bearings are made to take that kind of stress (from heat). They aren't made to take the additional friction and wear from dirt and other particulates.
@TheMryi
@TheMryi 6 жыл бұрын
The reason to the fizzling at the bearing is probably because of it having the higher surface area compared to the rest of the cup and is therefore the most common point of nucleation where the carbonic acid splits into carbon dioxide and water, basically the same process as when you dip your finger into carbonated water and bubbles form on your finger

@@HeadHunter697 No it doesn't. Rubbing alcohol, or isopropanol, is even recommended by Bones for cleaning their bearings. The only thing it might damage is the rubber shields, which should be removed before submerging in a cleaning solvent anyway. 99% isopropanol works best. It doesn't destroy bearings. Citrus cleaners can work in a pinch but often leave unwanted residue behind.

Do you take the caps of the bearings or leave them on
@AgentWest
@AgentWest 7 жыл бұрын
~Remove the dust caps from bearings. ~Use Diet Coke. No sugar, no stickiness. ~Flush the bearings with water, preferably while spinning them to flush them better. Cola works great for cleaning chrome or stainess steel as well. Use a ball of aluminium foil as a sponge since it it tough enough to actually remove dirt, yet is softer than the steel or chrome and won't scratch it.

I know it’s a year late, but what you guys are experiencing with the specific bubble reactions at the bearing site is called “Nucleation” Nucleation is the first step in the formation of either a new thermodynamic phase or a new structure via self-assembly or self-organization. Nucleation is typically defined to be the process that determines how long an observer has to wait before the new phase or self-organized structure appears. To give a clear example: if you’ve ever poured a flute of champagne and noticed bubbles starting their formation midway up the side of the glass, that means there’s a micro imperfection in the surface of the glass (called a ‘Nucleation-site’) which allows for carbon-dioxide molecules to accumulate and form a bubble. This process repeats rapidly until there is not enough carbon-dioxide at the Nucleation-site to accumulate and form bubbles.

if you wanted to get the sticky off, you could have poured some isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) on them. I was skeptical of this video at first, but it was actually kinda fun to watch. best bearing cleaner ive found is brake cleaner. edit : take dust shields off to clean (if you even use them) and re lube with some 3 in 1 all purpose oil .

In carbonated drinks bubbles will form on an uneven surface. The pourosity of the sides of the cup and the bearings allow bubbles to form. The surface of the metal bearings is more pourus compared to the plastic cup and this is why the bubbles on the bearing form faster and rise to the surface almost immediatelly while the bubbles on the sides of the cup form more slowly and take time before they will grow large enough to surface.

If you ever decide to revisit this - here's some considerations that might be worth taking into account: Stickiness problem: Use diet/light/zero. What you are after are the acids to etch off rust, and those should be present in those versions of the drink without sugar - pick your poison, or hell - do a comparison between whatever variations you can get, set them for longer times (suggest 6/12/24/36), and - at different temperatures - (as it directly affects the chemical reactivity of the processes involved). I'd say then as a second 'post-processing' step, wash them out carefully with warm water to remove any residue of 'bearing cleanser' left, preferably hot-dry them with a blowdryer, and then oil them up and close the bearing cap.

Diesel is awesome for cleaning metal (and preventing rust when it's sitting still, gasoline may cause corrosion on various metals) I live in a city where there are no bearings to sell, and shipping from the internet is expensive, and takes 2-3 weeks, so I clean them every month to keep them for as long as possible :P I usually wash them with water and detergent, and then dry them right after (to avoid rust), then I lubricate it industrial bearing oil (I bought a whole galon of it) and it runs smooth as silk! The problem with the coke was sugar, it gets sticky after it dries. Use alcohol to remove it!

You guys should get a pail of Carb cleaner from Napa (or whatever auto parts place is in your area.) A 1 gallon bucket (the ones around here come with a nifty little basket with a handle inside) is between 20 and 25 bucks and would clean your bearings for YEARS. It WILL eat most plastic stuff (make it slimy and weak) but if you rinse your bearings off with fresh water and blow them out (a tiny air compressor and air chuck would work mint. You'd just need a tiny one.) this will clean them VERY well. I use this stuff to clean most of my metal parts, carburetors ect for my and my son's dirt bike and our snowmobiles. It works awesome and is VERY cheap and VERY reusable! I don't skate, but I love watching your videos - you guys have great tricks! Keep it up! Thank you for the sweet videos and constant content!

@johnfraser8158
@johnfraser8158 7 жыл бұрын
If you're taking the shields off anyway, the best way to clean the bearing is using something like WD-40, brake cleaner, or gasoline; then make sure to let them dry. After this make sure to grease or oil your bearings. If you don't grease your bearings they will be ruined the first time you use them and no, WD-40 cannot be used as a lubricant for your bearings. WD-40 has lubrication properties, but it is also part solvent and will not lubricate for very long. If you are cleaning your bearings, they are probably already slightly worn and this means that grease would be much better than oil. The grease will give better and longer lasting protection.

it still fizzes around the bearing because the bearing creates a surface area for the CO2 bubbles to form - think Mento's in coke, they're round and smooth it's essentially the same principle but scaled down.
@ty9154

it fizzes right at the bearings because the metal and rubber and stuff has small pores where carbon dioxide gas can form into little bubbles.

Soaking in vinegar and repacking with some grease can clean and reconditioned. But ketchup can clean coins, so using ketchup as cleaner and grease pack might make for a quick fix before you can get new ones or clean and re-grease them.

If you really want to use coke to clean your bearrings (I prefer citrus cleaner), Id suggest the following steps: - remove all shields - soak the bearing in the cleaner & maybe shake them around a little; I wouldn't leave them in coke overnight. - rinse them with hot water to remove cleaner - wipe off and blow-dry the bearings to remove all the water (to avoid further rust) - insert one shield (bottom) - apply lubricant (if you hear them hissing, they're too dry) - insert the second shield (keeps dirt outside & lubricant inside) Done

Just use mineral water. Carbonation helps with cleaning. If you saw people cleaning stuff with Coke, you can do the same thing with mineral water. Coke got sugar so it stick as you can see at the end of the video.
