A great lesson and a useful way to think about ability. You discussed only general ability, it I think it gets more complex when we talk about an ability at just a specific time in English. PRESENT - I can go; PAST - I was able to go; FUTURE - I can go (later).

Would is like wish. For exemple: I would like to play tennis like that guy. And should is like something like " i need make it". For exemple: I should read this book.

С should всё просто, а вот с would я и сам часто парюсь. Вроде бы понятно, в каких ситуациях должен использоваться would, но иногда встречаю такие предложения с would, что просто голову сломать можно. Так что пусть всё-таки прояснит.
@TheLineageEVO6 жыл бұрын
1) Would you mind telling me the time? Politeness 2) If I were you (but I'm not), I wouldn't say it to him. Conditional. We imagine something that isn't real. 3) Imagine your car refused to start, but you're still trying...you would say 'Damn! My Car won't start. It isn't the future, in this case, we use will to talk about the present situations. It means a refusal. The same thing happens with would. He wouldn't eat a beetroot. He refused to eat it. But he won't eat a beetroot could either mean the refusal and the prediction. it's easy to see this case with a beetroot in the Russian language. See: 1) He will not eat a beetroot is the future tense 2) He will not eat a beetroot is a refusal of somebody to eat it English is not that easy. Where we were? 4) I told you ages ago I would be on holiday last week. Past of Will. Russians use 'will' in this case. 5) habits in the past. When I was little, I would ride my bike. I did it more than one time in the past. This is the tough one: all the uses of would imply past habits: "I loved Auggie. I was never afraid of him: even when I was little. I had friends that couldn't believe I'd ever go over to Via's house. "His face creeps me out," they'd say. "You're stupid," I'd tell them.

Can is a modal auxiliary verb. Am I correct? Be able to is a semi modal and has asimilar meaning to can.But can and be able to are not the same One is modal and the other one semi modal. We can also say could sometimes is the past tense of can. 9:00 I can go tomorrow(The future)

It's said that you can use "can" to talk about present ability while "could" past ability. Example I can play a piano. (present ability) I could play a piano when I was in secondary school. (past ability and it means I can't play the piano now)
