This is amazing! I am teaching the future tense tmr and I was discussing with my partner. We had the material and a grammar book but the grammar teaching guide didn't help at all!! We couldnt even convince ourselves that there's a universal rule for will and be going to. And then I came across your video. How funny is that lol I guess there really isn't a rule then. There might be an answer in the corpus, but definitely not in a native speaker hahaha

Yeah I guess there's no clear-cut rule. In terms of communicating the message, by all means we can scrap the "rules" to save learners the hassle and confusion. But in terms of sounding the most natural, wouldn't you say we should and can provide some basic guidelines? For example, learners commonly say in response to: What are your plans tonight? = "I will watch a movie." Sure, the message is communicated fine, but it doesn't sound the most natural. We would much rather say, "I'm going to (gonna) watch a movie" or "I'm watching a movie". So, why? Here's when learners might appreciate some basic "guidelines". So just in terms of plans/intentions (excluding things like offers, predictions, spontaneous decisions etc.), here's what I think learners should take heed of: A) (Be) going to / present continuous = use for plans/intentions that are to happen in the relatively near future, and are quite probable, or more "fixed". E.g. I'm gonna get / I'm getting married next week! (We wouldn't say "I will get married next week!") Or: I'm gonna meet / I'm meeting James tonight. You coming? (We wouldn't say "I will meet James tonight. You coming?") B) Will = use for plans/intentions that are further into the future (kind of more like promises), and are subject to change. E.g. I will become a doctor (someday). I will travel the world after I complete my degree. I think I'll visit my grandparents next year. And of course, here, '(be) going to' (n.b. not present continuous) can replace 'will'. It's just that 'will' cannot replace '(be) going to' in all situations. So the main thing to note for plans/intentions is that, while '(be) going to' can replace 'will' with no problems, 'will' can't always replace '(be) going to' without it sounding unnatural. Bottom line for learners = If in doubt, ALWAYS USE (BE) GOING TO! It's the most fluid and flexible of the future forms.
@andresbermudez84982 жыл бұрын
@@bigsmallshorttall This is such a good point. Although I usually go by what he says at the end of the video. Tht is, I tell my students to use GOING TO and WILL as they wish, I do realize that a lot of sentences just sound unnatural with that approach. But I also think that the best way to learn how to use them is by immersing in the language, to learn like natives learn - by copying other natives, not by learning rules. And that takes years. Yours is a good guide though. Thanks.

Probably also depends on whether you are Australian, American or British, the British seem to be more precise with their explanations but often say that in US English it is exactly the other way around. So in AU English it could be twice as different. I am a fan of using them naturally and by feeling as the complexity of explanations is too high to think about while in the middle of your sentence. That logic is too slow to maintain your natural speed. "We can go to the pub and have fun and I guess be at home by midnight, but who cares, we won't /are not gonna make it home before midnight anyway, so why bother". Just say whatever comes to mind first, cuz if you spend time thinking about it, you will have to determine in your mind whether it is a decision or a prediction, then whether it is based on evidence and a minute is gone and determining whether something is actually based on evidence isn't exactly an easy task even though you know the actual rule.

I'm Italian, and I confuse the sounds between: "want" and "won't" for example: "I want to go" and "I won't go" they sound very similar but the meaning is completely different.
@bigsmallshorttall6 жыл бұрын
Common problem. With your mouth, think of 'want' as a more relaxed, open sound, and 'won't' as a tighter, rounder sound. Try this: Say 'one', then 'want'. The vowel sounds should sound similar. Say 'own', then 'won't'. The vowel sounds should sound similar. I guess it will depend on your accent, but this should generally help to make the sounds distinguishable.

Of all the "rules," that appear in grammar books which are supposed to help students decide whether to use "will," or "going to," I believe that there are only two worth paying any attention to. Students - your grammar book will tell you that when you are volunteering to do something in the future, you must use *will*. I believe this is 100% correct. I have never heard a native speaker volunteer to do something by saying "I'm going to do it." Example, your boss asks "I need somebody to write up the minutes from this meeting, can I please have a volunteer?" A native speaker would always say "I'll (I will) do it," and never "I'm going to do it." The second one is the simple one that, if you have already decided, for definite, on a course of action, then you should use "going to," rather than "will." Otherwise, I agree that students should ignore the "rules," on this point listed in their grammar books. Here is an example of one such list of rules: www.grammar.cl/Notes/Future_Will_vs_Going.htm . With this list everything listed under the "will," column (other than offering to do something) is something that, in fact, you could also use "going to," for.
