Many people don't know what EXACTLY Prof Crystal has done for the English language. He has simplified recondite, arcane, abstruse topics for the layman to read and enjoy. Above all, he has dedicated his life to arousing in people like us an insatiable curiosity about language in general. I took up linguistics solely because of him and my mentor, Prof Pullum. I remember emailing Prof Crystal for the first time in 2013 when I was at university. He responded to me within hours. I was simply awestruck. (In linguistic circles, perhaps beyond, he is regarded as a demi-god.) Such a remarkably erudite gentleman, and yet so humble. Much love and respect. Thank you, Canguro English.

I didn’t notice the “smile your on camera” sign was wrong until I went back and looked. I corrected it unconsciously. It would make sense if you put another smile at the end. “Smile your on camera smile”

So she emphasizes the systemic functional linguistic approach to language description overlapping with cognitive processing: "a word is always contextual." I wonder what her take would be on John Field's psycholinguistic approach to discourse processing in listening comprehension. 🤔

Here in Spain, misconceptions are so abundant when it comes to these sociolinguistic aspects of language use and they start with the teachers, parents and students as well. She is totally right, testing is the one setting the standards and the private and public sectors are incredibly dependent on it.😢

I can actually speak English and i didnt even have a curiosity about learning grammar i was just speaking out and also i hadn't even known the level distinction i mean like A1 - A2 - B1 etc... 😂 Also at the end of the years i have realized that i must learn grammer and English words if you dont have a grammer and if you dont know the rules of the language you learn it absolutely means that you will not be successful as much as you want because grammar is the ground of the language My English level is b2 now I think in my opinion... I am creating this comment because i want to check this out after years 😊

Even better would have been to tell the learners to create sentences with the words and their already existing vocabulary, preferably within the context of their own personal experience.

To "give the first born child to NameDrop": In Germany we have two Principles: 'Sittenwiedrig' and one i can't remember. If a contract violates 'die guten Sitten' the part who violates will be voided. I think, that in the british law system wil be exist similar principles.

English and Spanish (the latter is my mother tongue) are all the way different. In Spanish, by using, say, 20, 000 words, you will peruse and relish the classics (Góngora, Quevedo, Cervantes, Ortega, Zubiri, Morente), both of yore and modern; contrariwise, in English, with such a bunch you could well-nigh wot Moby-Dick's plot, but you couldn't ken, as it were, Hume's, Berkeley's, or Morison's volumes. Daily I read for two hours, and daily I pick up from 50 to 70 new coins! English is a bluidy bugaboo made of words, and a shannack teeming with grammatical witches.
