Glen Scrivener discuss the three options Tom Holland sees confronting us as he chooses to engage the Christian roots of Western culture. Glen asks the question: can we use Christianity to save culture? Some have accused Ayaan Hirsi Ali of doing just that. Glen examines the dangers and points to the real power of real Christianity.

Gotta give credit. As an atheist i found this not only interesting. I also found really fair and balanced take.

You are absolutely right, however these people have a huge following and it is possible that many will turn to the church to find answers. We the church need to be ready

People need to be brought to Christ somehow. Do we need to criticize the manner in which people have their eyes opened? Can we just not welcome our fellow man on to the path? My eye keep getting opened and re-opened. More eyes need to be here.

We should not criticize the manner in which people have their eyes opened. But we should point out that cultural Christianity is not the endpoint as it is a house built on sand not on the rock which is Jesus Christ.

Good commentary on cultural issue. I was wondering when you would go back to the Nancy Pearcey interview & then you did! At least two types of evangelical; the theological (church going) one and the social/political (declares oneself evangelical but rarely if ever goes into a church. New word for Christendom) one. We humans are powerful and can run on 10 of 12 cylinders (USA examples); 1) we have corporations producing products at the same time delving into DEI, wokeness & ESG 2) we have unnecessary governmental restrictions on companies but they still produce, such as fossil fuel industry 3) we create segregated school settings such as the southern states and now we have a legacy in which now to have a black college (HBCU) next to a formally all white college, but we continue along in this inefficient system unable to resolve the inefficiency. In conclusion, I see the option of us continuing along in Enlightenment and power while using Christianity enough so we don’t go off the rail completely.

The question which is the title of this video is absolutely the right question to be asking - however I do not believe that either the host - in his decision to remain in the Church of England and not to publicly address the failure of its leaders (this while he acts as someone choosing to engage publicly on other issues affecting the world church) - or his interviewee here Tom Holland - should be turned to for insight AT THIS MOMENT into this question. (Things may change - I am only commenting on how things stand now). The host's choices that I mentioned are his choosing to adhere to a form of cultural Christianity. As regards Tom Holland - while he says that he believes that there is no Christianity without Christian beliefs - no practices without "the rocket fuel" - in this interview he reveals that he doesn't in fact currently believe this. In responding to a question about the possible ways forward for the West from here - now that it has adopted a kind of cultural Christianity - Tom says of societies where he believes either the strong have failed to protect the weak - or will: "And people who want to defend that" (that being human rights - equality - the strong caring for the weak) "will have to start looking at the origins of these things - and that may lead them to come back to the church. That is certainly the path that I have been on". Note those words "come back to the church". To come back to the church (instead of to turn to God) is to choose another form of cultural Christianity (this time linking oneself with people who in greater percentage than the world profess a faith - but who may in many or even most cases are at best fellow proponents of cultural Christianity - instead of to be a Christian).

Only God can save us. We need obey Him as He wants, not as we wants. At the same time I hope that we can bring Ayaan Hirsi Ali closer to God, using her current place in life.

(Before having watched and just reacting to the title) It seems to me that Cultural Christianity and saving the culture are two different words for the same thing, and it would be hard to do that thing without saving SOMEBODY. Yeah, sane cultural standards are a temporal good and believers and the Church are supposed to be in favor of temporal good. So the question is not whether doing one will do the other, but whether you can do it without an increase in saving faith.

Good point on the need to distinguish. Cultural Christianity is completely inevitable and is not to be lamented in itself (it can be, in fact, a gateway for many to real faith and can also have a leavening effect on a culture). BUT when it's sought as something to be exploited for ends other than faith (eg political ends) it can be pernicious indeed.

No, real Christianity can save the culture. Not fake Christianity. About 80% of Christian families, the kids when they grow up, retain the faith. Christians need to have more kids. Or we're done.

All correct. But what a missed opportunity to declare the gospel and the necessity of the new birth! You must be born again, you must believe on Jesus, the Christ!

I agree with this. I’m a little unsure of using a New York Times opinion piece as evidential support for your argument though. Unless, that is, you seriously agree with the current mainstream media’s united push to instil fear into the U.S. voting public by portraying Trump as a fascist? I’m not American, so it doesn’t immediately affect me, but it seems to me if anyone comes close to being fascist, it’s the current administration. Certainly, they’re the most undemocratic.

No it can’t, only the Holy Spirit can really lead us to bring the kingdom to earth. Philosophies alone will not do it can be used to define who the ‘other’ is. There is no dehumanisation against anyone if true Christianity is practised.

The closest thing to an official song the H youth had was Vorwärts! Vorwärts! Forward! Forward! And it has none of that in it But the song in question was cited in the Nuremberg trials as having been sung in 1934.
