i love this series because it’s so humbling. everybody likes to give professional golfers shit for shooting a few over but then you see a decent golfer like erik go and struggle and you realize how truly difficult these courses are. He is doing this without being televised, and without a lot of money at stake, which makes it that much tougher when the professionals play. Props to erik for bringing us this content and keeping that level of mental fortitude.

This is a great series Erik. And although it's probably no consolation for your frustration during the round, I really appreciate your honesty and perseverance, as I'm sure everyone else does too. It's humbling, and almost encouraging, to see a golfer, of your talents, tackle the mental game the same way we all do. I found myself wincing when it didn't go right and then wishing encouragement upon you when in the rough. You and your team have done a cracking job mate and I can't wait for the back nine!

Thanks for putting yourself through it for my benefit Eric, absolute lad! Constructive point...Can we get a gimble or steady cam for when we're walking down the fairways with you?
@KyleShevlin4 жыл бұрын
If the goal is really to break 90, you need to start playing with that in mind off the tee. Find the fairway, get to a spot you can get up and down from. You make it so much harder on yourself than necessary in every one of these break 90 videos. Play every single hole as +1 on the scorecard, give yourself an extra shot to get to the green, on purpose, and make "birdies" by getting up and down. You could totally break 90 with that mindset. No course is too tough when you give yourself an extra shot and legitimately play that way. Then again, I don't really get the sense the goal is to break 90, but to showcase how tough the courses are and so I think you're being a bit of a masochist on purpose. Regardless, thanks for all the great content over the years Erik. Keep it up.

Erik, I'm with ya. I played Sedgefield CC(Home course of Mr. Chris whom you played in the hickory open with and that I worked at for 13 years till just after the course rebuild.) today with my hickories. Just a month out of the Wyndham Championship. Course was in awesome shape but brutal! Greens putting very true at the speed of my kitchen floor, and felt almost as hard. Cups were unforgiving as I had at least 6 lip outs. Rough was deep but not 6 inches. I found several of the "new" bunkers that were added when the course was rebuilt. Did not hit the ball real solid all day but not that bad. Only lost one ball in the hazard on 8 with no other penalties....92...Best part is I played with a good friend on his birthday, the round was comped and got a free beer too!

Looks like we may have to bring on the RGC Rules committee...see 32:10 mark of video. In my opinion, unless marker and player agree that this last put on 9 was missed, we are looking at a DQ. (1) Marker’s Responsibility: Entering and Certifying Hole Scores on Scorecard. After each hole during the round, the marker should confirm with the player the number of strokes on that hole (including strokes made and penalty strokes) and enter that gross score on the scorecard. When the round has ended: • The marker must certify the hole scores on the scorecard. • If the player had more than one marker, each marker must certify the scores for those holes where he or she was the marker. New Rules of Golf for 2019 - Updated June 2018 13 (2) Player’s Responsibility: Certifying Hole Scores and Returning Scorecard. During the round, the player should keep track of his or her scores for each hole. When the round has ended, the player: • Should carefully check the hole scores entered by the marker and raise any issues with the Committee, • Must make sure that the marker certifies the hole scores on the scorecard, • Must not change a hole score entered by the marker except with the marker’s agreement or the Committee’s approval, and • Must certify the hole scores on the scorecard and promptly return it to the Committee, after which the player must not change the scorecard. If the player breaches any of these requirements in Rule 3.3b, the player is disqualified.

Clarifying question: I've wondered this over the years of EAL support, how does he recommend not playing for score but also knows his handicap? I want to be a "just for fun" golfer but I also want to play in golf outings, and somehow "I never keep score because a 5.8 handicap youtuber who doesn't keep score told me not to" doesn't seem to fly haha. Any assistance from any fans or EAL himself would be appreciated!

13:24 what I think is great about this series is that Erik is a good-enough player so that his shots are not going to be so horrible as to deny that he has the skill to make a shot (leaving his execution as an issue), but he's not good enough to deny that his "shot management", that is to say his choice of shot, is an issue. Course-management being an entirely-different issue, that's sort of like the debate between socialism and capitalism. First you have to define exactly what those are, and then you get into the issue of how they stack up against each other. No this is a case where you have to look at the pros and cons of each shot selection AND the technical execution thereof, and there is so much grist for the mill that alone because you're talking about an issue that can easily take away strokes...or add them on. Bottom-line is that making a shot is one thing, choosing a shot to make is another, and executing the choice of shot a third thing, and ultimately you have to choose a shot that you have a high chance of making, a low chance of missing, and given the fact that you are no going to make every shot that you try, a reasonable chance of recovering when you miss. So you're balancing the pros and cons of each possible shot that can get the job done along with the exact job that you're trying to get done given the array of shots and their odds of being made or missed. This is an excellent example. #1: do you go for the green here or lay-up, do you go for a par or just a 4. He's got a 245 yard par 3 which is unusually tight, bordered by these tall trees with just one side even reasonably clear, the right side, but even then it's not like he's got 100 yards from side to side to play with. Plus there's a steep slope on the right, with OB running around behind the green from the right, with an adjacent fairway on the left. But it's a Par 3, you're supposed to hit on or near the green. But it's a 245 yard Par 3 from the tees that he's playing. So you have to ask a bunch of questions here before even selecting a shot and then selecting a club and those two are somewhat circular. So given the yardage..how are you going to get on that green from 250? Well you need a club, and a shot that you can plausibly hit 250 and you also need enough control of that club, taking that shot to keep it within the confines of the trees bordering the hole. If it falls in between the trees that's ok because you can probably chip on the green. So really you have to loosen your expectations here and probably just be happy to come away with a 4 on this hole. To get this ball on the green most directly you'd hit a low shot either straight or coming in from the sides with a slight draw or fade keeping it below the tree to the left and clearly it has to drop in below the trees right next to the green. So a stinger up front or a slight draw but in any case you need something that is going to drop through the tree-height into the area near the green. I don't know about you but in my opinion for most people that shot is not going to be hit with an iron unless you're seriously laying up and pitching on, i.e. a planned 4. So the first question is answered by whether or not Erik has a 245 yard draw in his bag. With any club. Does he have it with an iron? We'll soon find out. But for me, no question I'm coming in there with a driver, I might even tee off from way right and put a cut driver on the green. Absolutely that would be my best shot here. So you can see at 13:50 he played the iron, a decent shot but not nearly enough to make the green which kept all of the trouble out of play...and he didn't fan it, so he's in front of the green. Again, he's a decent ball-striker and that is what decent ball-striking does for you, it doesn't introduce a huge element of randomness which can easily result in disaster. But again, he's not a PERFECT ball-striker, or even a great one, and that inevitably comes out in his play. But not here, not now. So now he's got what would be called a "money-shot". Perfect lie, 30 yards off the green, it's sitting right there all he has to do is chip on it and putt-out. If he gets too focused on this and zooms on the pin that's a different problem. Here you almost want to just blur everything on the back of the green and just chip to the center of the green, take what the hole is giving you and get off it. The problem for most people is when they get greedy and try to chip to the pin....shots get harder when you try to be more precise. This next shot can make or break the entire hole. So let's see what happens... sure enough, he chips it low and it comes in just right of center, just left of the front left bunker but it looks like it hits the rough above the trap and can easily circle around the back of that trap and either stick in the rough or fall down into the bunker...or *possibly* trickle onto the green. This is when the heart flutters as you've already fucked-up the shot and now the question is just how bad is it going to be. ...and in this case it takes a weird hop off the right front rough and goes right for the fucking hole...it stops....one inch from the fucking hole. Amazing. I mean that was just fucking amazing. But this is the thing about Erik's game. He's good enough where he can fall on either side of the line between a good shot and a bad shot. With him you just don't know until the ball stops rolling. But you know he's going to go after it, and he's got the skill to have at least a decent chance of making a good shot, but he's not consistent enough to always make a good shot or conservative enough to play safe shots instead of risky shots and that is what makes his game entertaining to watch. It is also the exact same thing that keeps him from scoring low. The thing about golf is that you can take a 50% chance time and time again, half of the time you lose and half you win but when you lose, you lose more strokes than you gain when you win. Just to break even you need to keep the odds of success around 75%. Of course it depends on how good or bad the results turn out to be but over the long run there are just too many opportunities to lose shots and not nearly enough opportunities to save shots. So ultimately the mark of a good player is when they shoot par or better for a round, because there are so many ways to do that...and so many ways to not do that. The rest of us are just out there flailing around. If you're not scoring any birdies then you're not a good player unless you par each and every hole. If you do shoot birdies, then they offset the bogeys, or the handful of double-bogeys, or the occasional triple. You're out there consistently hitting bogeys and double-bogeys, you're simply not a good player...you're just someone who can play well enough to shoot 80, 90 even 100...and that's why the whole "breaking 90" series really matters. Just about every golfer can sympathize with this struggle. But just as importantly, he's not trying to TELL players how to break 90, or whatever. He's showing them how he does it, the best that he can do it. And if you have a sharp eye and a keen mind for golf you can easily learn from his mistakes. Plus face it, playing Tournament tees is about as hard as you can get and who doesn't wish they could play the Tournament tees on a US Open course? You just don't see this level of course-exposure during a PGA telecast, definitely not this level of interaction with the players during the rounds and as well you don't get the obnoxious commentary from the player themselves like almost every other golf vlogger with even half a game loves to do. This is almost as good as actually going out and playing a round myself. half an hour of condensed, well-edited golf fun which is great for a slow afternoon
