@@Tanax13I am in Italy English is the second language (including Italian)that you start studying as early as elementary school, then you start studying the third language (or Spanish or French, or sometimes German) and then in high school, if you have chosen a linguistic high school (like I did) or if you have chosen a school with foreign languages as subjects, you can study German or Russian, but there are also courses that allow you to study other languages. then at university one will choose. in my school (liceo linguistico internazionale) we study Italian, English, Spanish, German and Latin. But we also have Cambridge certifications so we have to study mathematics, biology, history and geography in English. we have to enter with at least an A2 in English, but it is preferred to enter with a B1. for those who haven't understood, there are many high schools because they are divided into what you want to study, for example in "liceo scientifico" you will do more scientific subjects, or in "tecnico economico" you will do law and economics (diritto ed economia)

These are mostly NOT simple questions at all!!! Plus they ask language based geography questions in English to people who are not native English speakers. @loke66647 ай бұрын
@@itkenverta Many were easy but some insanely hard. How many nations speak Spanish? I mean, I know there are a lot but the exact number? I'm European... But I think it comes down to different focus in school and exposure to things outside the country. US schools are more focused on math so if you ask an American about that they are likely to do better then a European at average. European schools focus more on history and geography so the opposite goes there, with the exception that Americans tend to have pretty good knowledge about US geography (but further away then Canada and northern Mexico is a bust). History is worse, Americans tend to know about the revolutionary war and things from WW2 or later but if you ask them something like why the US invasion of Canada in 1812 failed, most of them get very confused. But it is not really because anyone are more stupid then anyone else and frankly, math, geography and history might be less useful today when we all have a smartphone with us everywhere, particularly math and geography which are easy to check up when you need them. With history, it is easy to check up simple facts but it is harder to understand the full picture and how that lead to the current situation with a simple Googling. If that is something useful however could also be discussed, it might be in some situations but in everyday life it is probably less applicable then one would hope. I am older then smartphones so I have my brain filled with often useless facts but it might be that we might need to reconsider a lot of how we see knowledge and being smart in the future. Then again, if the internet and electricity goes down to a massive Carrington event for a while, humanity would be pretty screwed....

Which shows, I knew all the countries and capitals of the world, my kids struggle with Europe already. What also helped, we usually watched the news on TV together with our parents before we eventually started the bedtime routine. It was a set thing in the day. News in Germany are pretty dry and worldwide with maps, capitals, towns shown, so you learned on the side, also the shapes. In todays age where everyone just consumes their own bubble news, which is often more entertainment frankly than news, the kids/teens don't tend to watch news that much, so they don't learn on the side without even trying.

4:46 I would have said London, Edinburgh, Belfast, and, hell, what's the capital of Wales? Cardiff, as I now know, thanks to Google. Well, I'm German, so I think three out of four ain't bad. 9:06 You said, Germany and Belgium. That would be right if you turned the flag 90°, but he said 180°, that means upside down. I had no idea. Well, better than a German politician who said she had changed her mind 360°. 10:48 "India", again, you are partly right, but it was many years earlier. India changed its city names back to the original, like Bombay is now Mumbai, and I think Bangalore is now Bangaluru again. But they didn't change the country's name, which would be Bharat if they did. (Been there and I loved it.) 12:00 "Italy is not a continent", he's excused. When I was a child I thought Italy was an island until I drove there by car, over the alps like Hannibal. You have to do that once in a lifetime. From then on, you'll prefer a plane. 12:57 I know perfectly well what DC means, it's direct current (as from batteries) contrary to alternating current (AC, as from the power grid). So Washington runs on batteries. Am I correct? 15:20 That guy with suit and tie, the politician, he learned his lessons well and replied with "That's a very good question" in the beginning instead of just thinking like untrained people would do. 17:18 You wish New York was a country? Well, why not. The country of New York City, and the country of California. I think the rest of the U.S. could live with that. 18:47 Oh, come on. THE Federal Republic of Germany, that's where I live, THE Czech Republic, my next-door neighbor, THE Swiss Confederation (commonly known as Switzerland), THE United States of America, THE Ukraine, THE Russian Federation, and many more. So these were elite people from Europe's youth. Compared to the average population, I'd say, they knew a lot. I just thought, yes, you could ask me "name ten states of the USA", I could probably do that, but "name them from north to south", or east to west, I'd probably fail.

And BTW, San Marino was established as a city, and later changed to a city- state status ....but both are a bit different to a real country

I don't think Egypt counts, since it was not really a country for centuries or even millennia after Augustus fully integrated it as part of the Roman empire. China would be a strong contender i think, since there i believe is a direct continuation as a country from the foundation of the Qin Dynasty in 221 BC, despite a lot of regime changes. I'm not sure for India, the civilization is like 2 and a half millennia old, but the political history is messy. In Europe, France is probably the oldest country as there is a continuation as a country since the Baptism of Clovis in 496, despite the name itself being more recent.

So let's see how many I can name still from the top of my head: Eritrea, Morocco, Ethiopia, Somalia, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, Guiana, Democratic republic of the Congo, Sudan, South Africa, Madagascar, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mali.... ehm... Togo. Burundi, New guinea.. Ghana.. Nigeria, Niger.. Algeria. Yeah.. That's about what I recall. I'm 45 y/o and grew up in Europe. I think we got most between us, which isn't bad in my book. I do the same for US states by breaking them down into regions like West Coast, Potatoes and Corn, Cowboys and Deserts, Cold and Lakes, Bible Belt, East Coast and the Fiddly 'Little' Ones. I can usually remember at least 95% off the top of my head. Pointing to them on a map is a different story, but I'm getting there.

Generally speaking, Europeans are much less self-absorbed than Americans are with their own Country and their delusional sense of greatness. That results in People more interested in learning about other Countries, its history and cultures. And History itself as an important role in that knowledge. Countries like Portugal were born in 1143AD (881yo) and had colonies “all over the World”. USA was born in 1776 (248yo) after being basically a British colony. Our History and Geography classes are obviously different. And so is our knowledge of those subjects.
