Thank you Paradox Interactive for sponsoring this video.
Giant swords as seen in anime and video games like Guts' dragon slayer sword from Berserk and Cloud's buster sword from final fantasy 7 are awesome but not very practical. But is there a way they can be included in a more realistic and functional way?

On the Dragon Slayer: it's supposed to be ridiculously gigantic in the story. The smith who made it was shamed and threatened into exile when he entered it to a nobles' bidding competition of making a sword that can kill a dragon. All others made swords that were elegant and decorated. And ultimately useless. He made a sharpened slab. It would do the job, if there were any dragons to kill or any men able to lift it. After the Eclipse, it could be said that Guts isn't fully human anymore, so his ability to use the sword could have credence in that regard. Furthermore, after years of killing the astral ghoulies that haunt him every night, the sword has become "enchanted" with the ethereal guts of said wights.

yeah, the only reason I think he's able to do what he's doing. even griffith who's really good still seemed human, guts in 100 man slayer scene seemed like some really strong dude, but still human because he was exhausted after and fell unconscious. after that he was just monstrous.

Agreed. I wish they had included the scene where Guts gets Dragonslayer in any of the anime, because it justifies its overbuilt design. Guts' sword was shattered by an apostle. Dragonslayer is the only thing that held up to the strain, and even then Guts best the hell out of it over two years.

I feel the need to point out that during the golden age arc of berserk, before all the demons and God's, Guts (the dude in the thumbnail) actually had a more practical sword. It was about as long as he was tall but not insanely thick, and only after all the demons and magic happens does Guts get the upgrade to the mega death thick hunk of iron in the thumbnail and that is most used in giant sword discussions.

Fourmond Léo, exactly, it's like an in-universe meme that highlights Gutt's extraordinary strength. It purposely contrasts all the other weaponry in the series, which is very diverse, but very very realistic. Kentaro Miura, the author, is a perfectionist and actually uses archeological finds as blueprints. Even the iron arm prosthetic of the protagonist has historical precedent. [minor spoiler:] It is also implied that the huge "slab of iron" has become effective against monsters because of supernatural reasons.

Jason Doe the most common explanation is it’s been soaked in the blood of so many thousands of apostles and demons that it rests in both the physical and astral planes. Allowing him to murder and ward off non-corporeal beings, like ghosts and maybe even demigods.

2:20 “the sword is throwing you around as much you’re throwing the sword around” That’s literally how Guts uses the Dragon slayer. A few chapters of Berserk featured Guts fighting an opponent while the two of them were surrounded by stone pillars. Dragon Slayer is the worst example to use in talking about big swords... It has been mentioned in the comic that it wasn't even crafted for human to use against other human, It was a weapon crafted by the kings order, and was only ever aiming to provide the ability to cleave through Dragons scale and skin, and the weapon was ditched and craftsman exiled due to it wasn't crafted in the way that any human can ever wield it... And the king was enraged and believe that the craftsman was mucking him with this unusable weapon... And Guts once mentioned that "Dragon Slayer have no edge, it's as blunt as a metal plate that you can cook meat on it, so any enemy got hit by it are not cut by the blade, but simply got their body smashed into pieces by the massive weight of this huge lump of metal...". And before the feast, when Guts were still fighting normal humans, his weapon were more close to a giant sword then what Dragon Slayer is all about...

And Berserk happens in a High Magic World, and Dragon Slayer is a cursed weapon... So arguing about how a magic sword are not suppose to be usable in real life... Ya... @@rishabhjagota4034 In the manga the Dragon Slayer has been know as a weapon that is "not usable by human", and Guts is not even human anymore after the Eclipse, both he and Casca had become "The Branded Offering", something that is half split outside of reality, which allow Guts to easily affect reality with his will, so he can achieve inhuman feats just with his sheer willpower... And the inner beast of Guts are also devouring the souls of all slain enemy to strengthen him even further... And Schierke also had noticed that Dragon Slayer had become a weapon enchanted by the blood of all the apostles and demons Guts has slain with it, which has turn it into a magical weapon that are more effective against inhuman beings... @heretyk_1337
@heretyk_1337 5 жыл бұрын
Jay Eisenhardt- eee... What? You mean you have to use whole body to operate big sword? Show me a martial art, where you don`t have to include whole body in every move... Even if move is small and fast, it still comes from your feet and hips. From boxing to polearms. Punch, thrust, cut, kick. They all can be very, very fast, and minimal, but they still need power of whole body behind them, if they are meant to do damage. About only thing, that i can agree with is that two handed swords are shitty without at least medium armor, and in normal clothing, or light armor one haded swords will be always better. But then why use two of the same? Two wepons of the same lenght are usually easier to be pushed aside by opponent, because they cover the smae distance, and have the same role. Why not get dagger in left hand, or mace? Sword is faster, it cuts and thrusts at the distance, while shorter, but stronger mace can serve, when swords already becomes useless. And dagger is always good option for close combat, and last resort backup. Even if you are on the ground, you can use it to deadly effect... I love daggers :) Montante- or pole axe- pickhammer, some dirk- ish(type "kordzik" in google) dagger, and some boot knife would be my pick, if i ever had to go to melee battle :)

Great video Shad. a couple things I would like to point out to add to your points: 1. Regarding the stress, the way historically in Europe that people have increased the width and strength of a blade without increasing the weight: fullers. Give the 12cm wide sword a double-fuller. 2. In a confined space, you could just use the massive sword like a spear, or use half-swording. 3. In Dragon Age: Inquisition, knight-enchanters use massive swords made entirely out of Fade Magic. 4. Regarding using these swords to fight large creatures, historically both the claymore in Scotland and the nodachi in Japan were used to chop the legs of charging horses: a very dangerous yet effective tactic. So there is a historical basis for using large swords to defeat large creatures.

yeah I was gonna mention, the thing that pissed me off about zanza's zanbattou isn't so much its physical impossibility but the fact that they recycled the name of an existing and very cool sword.. the thing you use to attack horses when you are horseless yourself! In fact proper nodachi/tachi/etc never seem to show up in anime or anything else. The only one I can think of was in Ronin Warriors / Samurai Troopers and it had a unique kind of a secondary grip on the crosshilt.

'If' it hits but I'm thinking it will only change the way you fight them. Controlling their blade more to pull them outta step on getting in their face as swinging 100lbs is difficult to control and change that close that quickly to defend properly. A small nudge might destroy their balance or you might just be sitting in the eye of the storm. That is all assuming your fighting a normal human who happens to fight with that large a weapon. Small changes inside his stance are large at the opponents end. Super human demigods that constantly and effortlessly control a weapon that large with one hand, or giant men "worlds strongest" using 20kilo and trained it's best to cheat and win anyway you can.

Guts actually started out with basically a very long zweihander, still like 2 meters tall, but a lot thinner than his dragon slayer...so, basically the sword you just described. When he switched to the dragon slayer, his acrobatic fighting style is also basically what you just described. The sword basically throws him around as much has he throws it around. I have a 16 pound sledgehammer (something like 7.5 kilos?) that I use for doing work, and I also swing around, scream and break stuff with when I wanna be a viking or something. Or work out, because I am a very strong person. I weigh about 200 pounds, or 90 kilos, bench twice my weight and deadlifted close to twice even that. I was training to be a power lifter at one point, so basically, I'm pretty strong for a normal human. That thing is fucking HARD to swing around. The only reason I can make it work even remotely well is because all of the weight is in the end. If I was using something the same weight and length, but the center of gravity was closer to me it would be incredibly difficult to control. I think I could probably use something to the same effect if it was two or even three times the weight, but only if all the weight was at the tip and at that point you just have to use it differently. Like you said, the weight just throws around regardless as to how strong you are. Also, I'd like to add that the longer the handle the more weight you can functionally control in my experience. I would have much greater control over a hammer that weighed 20 kg if it had a handle on it that was as long as I am. I don't know what the integrity of such a hammer would be, but you could would have more "point" control and you could do things like after the swing, slightly loosen your grip to increase the distance between you and the point and then pull down hard on it to create an incredible force of impact. Furthering along the point of STRENGTH required, one thing that is more important is FATIGUE. I could swing a 100 pound (45kg) hammer effectively with a TON of force of impact. I'm 100% confident in that, however... Swinging it more than once or twice with effective speed, accuracy and strength becomes an entirely different conversation. It's hard enough to just swing around a 16 pound sledge hammer for any length of time. You'd have to have Olympian endurance to do that for the duration of a battle, or at least a setup so you can actually rest somehow periodically. Just my two cents.

Things are _easier_ to control when the center of mass is closer to you as opposed to further away, not harder. Think of the sledgehammer versus a rapier. Which one is more nimble? Assume they weight the same. There's strength, fatigue, and friction with the ground when you're trying to swing it. Guts is techinically in the Interstice ever since the Eclipse. That means that, while he's not fully in the "thoughts and will create reality" layer of the world, he _is_ in the "thoughts and will can _influence_ reality" layer of the world. That bends the laws of physics just enough to make it possible for him to use the Dragonslayer. He's stronger, heals faster, and can swing the sword around.

So for some reason this video never hit my feed until today: However that is fine. Great video once again Shad. Talking about the point of using the Greatswords weight as a combat style I'd point out Monster Hunter's Greatswords. The Hunter (Or you the character) Uses a very large very heavy sword like cloud or guts, However when you make your attacks alot of the time you'll also go with the sword. A prime example is the "True Charge Slash" of monster hunter world (Or the 3rd attack in a standard great swords attack string.) You basically make a downward strike, get lifted off the ground, and when you land you pull the blade back up and strike down again. Just thought I'd try and point out a game that does that sort of acrobatic style a little bit of justice.

I love how you finally fully dove into this topic, because you have repeatedly in the past kinda brushed over it. this is definitely one of my favorite channels because it has just about everything: high quality content, great community, a content creater who is genuine.. but most of all it has... MACHICOLATIONSSSSSSSS!!!!

Guts only picked up the Dragonslayer because his other swords would break against the demons (which has been seen on the manga), nothing more, nothing less. He even mentioned before that DS is to clunky to use at it's full potential

Ninja Hombrepalito, because you haven't actually read the manga and you incorrectly assume it doesn't start _in medias res_ ... Honestly, I could give a more detailed answer but I don't want to spoil it for you. *edit:* Oh I see, you wrote "that *other* large one". That's shifting the goalposts, OP and your first comment were clearly referencing the dragonslayer.

Jason Doe I saw the first series a while ago. He had the huge sword when he met Griffith, which is where the story begins. He git that one from the bladesmith, and lost it fighting the demons when Griffith became a demon. Which is where that mini series ends. Then I saw as far as him grabbing the sword of the skeleton guy and fighting the small flying demons at night on the field. Haven't found a poor phone place where I can watch the rest of the series (but I don't care about spoilers, I've given up on watching the series, only care about the highlights).

This reminds me of how an old Pathfinder game went in which we stole some stuff from 3.5 D&D to have a brawler with monkey grip using a full blade(super large greatsword). They tried to use it while on one of the lower decks of the ship, they didn’t use the full blade again till we hit land.

it's interesting that you brought up swinging the blade and letting the weight through you around as part of the fighting style because that is the same method of fighting used by artorias in dark souls and by guts in his berserker armor state
