I think the reason you don't see this more often historically is that it SEEMS like it would be just as effective as a poleaxe or halberd, but that might change when you put it up against armor. That weapon would do absolute wonders against a group of thinly clothed rabble rousers, but if you were to put that up against sturdy gambesons, mail, or let alone plate armor, I don't think this thing has much penetration power other than its thrust... which is great, but why not just use a spear if you're ONLY worried about thrust. Poleaxe and Halberd have more heft to their blades and also often allow for blunt damage on one side, making it much more effective against armor. Swords have never really done very well against armor, historically.
@brucemcfarling78104 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking ... the inertia of the strike is right behind the short cutting surface of the halberd, so it's effectiveness when it lands well is greater. Greater cutting range is no great advantage if it doesn't do enough damage when it strikes.
@senza45914 жыл бұрын

Looking at those 2 illustrations and the large cross guard I have an interesting theory. I thing the Swordstaff was built specifically to counter other polearms. In individual combat it would be excellent for capturing or deflecting spears and swords with tremendous leverage and additional weight. And in a line formation it could be used to push enemy polearms up and out of the way so the soldiers behind the first line could stab into the enemy formation.

I think a swordspear may be great for Witchers in replacement to their silver longswords, as it would give them great cutting ability through the sword blade and cutting power through the spear length. Not to mention the extra safety you'd get from using a spear, something we know humans used to hunt "gigantic, wild beasts," versus a longsword, something more commonly used in duels or self defense.

The naginata isn't quite the same; the blade's generally shorter. However, there is a good comparison; the nagamaki. Imagine a no-dachi, the Japanese greatsword, but wrapped all the way to about halfway its blade's length - that's where the name comes from, half-wrapped. It does come out, though, as a sword-staff and later nagamaki were created specifically that way. Usually by taking cheaper katana and bolting them to the end of a stick.
@CazadorSlayer5 жыл бұрын
I wonder if it'd be hard to find physical evidence of a weapon like the swordstaff, thanks to it's blade shape. After all, if you find a rusted sword blade during an archaeological dig, the first thought is "OH, IT'S A SWORD!" I'm going to assume you made this video thanks to my referencing of the swordstaff in that double-sword video. I know it isn't the case, but it makes me happy to think that it is. So thanks, Shad! Glad I could inspire you! ;D (Nice touch with your shield depicted the swedish flag when you mentioned those swedish warriors, by the way!) You mentioning using the crossguard as a spike reminded me of another underappreciated historical weapon... Chinese Dagger-Axes! They are a bit like a spear, but with a second blade set perpendicular to the shaft for striking. A Jumonji Yari would also be quite similar. So many awesome Eastern weapons, overshadowed by the damn katana...

As a Dane larping and trying a bit of reenactment, wanting to use a weapon more unique to Scandinavia (not just Sweden) I have also tried using a sword staff. I made a sword staff with a 1,65 meters height to the crossguard and 65 cm blade. The blade and crossguard were only weighing 600 grams as there were not added any weight to the blade for balance. I found you had quite a bit more of control over your opponents weapon with a sword staff than any other polearm I have tried. I also found that if you had the length so that the crossguards were a bit shy of your full height, you could fence with it similarly to two-handed sword, but with greater reach. When fencing it was quite easy to switch between far and near combat, to the point where I ditched the offhand dagger I normally carry in the right hand when fighting with spears. I simply didn't need a quick an dirty cc weapon for when a sword and shield got past the point. Finally, when I decided to stop trying reenactment fighting, I sharpened the blade to test how it managed to cut. I found that against non to lightly armoured pork, the sword staff did horrendous damage. It even managed to cut through a discarded arming jacket! However, as soon as the pork had any kind of metal armour, the sword staff where quite underwhelming compared to a poleaxe. So, if your opponents are Calvary or lightly armoured enemies I would say the sword staff is superior. It might also be in close formations where you don't have space for heavy swings.

I think the closest thing to a swordstaff in a Japanese history was the Naginata, most notably used by Onna Bugeisha. However many Yari spears had longer heads and bladed edges so they may have also had a slashing function. Edit: The Chinese weapon known as Kwan dao or guan dao could also be classified as a sword staff since it has a similar blade to the dao broadsword on a shaft.

Some people looking in to these suspect they are either re-purposed bear hunting spears or an evolution of bear-spears used at the time in southern/middle Sweden the work "Skalltyg och jaktspjut" by Torsten Lenk talks aobut this and I remember reading something like quillioned spears for bearhunting (knävelspjut) being at times owned by the crown and at times required for some peasants to own. The other thing about the swordstaff is that a lot more complex metallurgy goes into a sword blade than a poleaxe or spear blade. Swords were hard to make, compared to axes or hammers or spikes or even spear points. Of course they were less common when you can't afford to make as many of them.

I am a big fan of the "swordspear". As one who's been a student of martial arts, I felt like I needed to create my own longsword. I ended up making two that are very swordspear-ish. One out of a piece of re-bar with a split piece of bamboo bracing each side of the handle to give it the right shape (then wrapped in ducktape) for weight training, and the other out of a goalie's stick I got from my neighbor. If you are interested in the dimensions for one of your own to test: Holding your arm bend at a 90 degree angle (like one would with a walking stick/trekking pole) hold something to take the measure to the top of your fist-this is the full length of the sword. The handle length is determined by measuring the distance from the crook of the elbow to the middle finger. For reference I am 6ft, and my sword is 46in. overall with a blade length of 30 in. and a handle length of 16in. Because it's made out of a goalie stick there is no cross guard, but I am currently writing a novel that features the sword. It has a single fuller, the cross guard is triangular (similar in shape to a taiji sword's, but extending past the edge of the blade) and the base of the blade has a 2.5-3in. ricasso before the fuller starts. o7

With that, we mean any group of armed people, that have an outer lane of warriors armed with pikes and spears. These should give protection against horses and other enemy units, for the fighters inside this formation, who used all sorts of shorter range weapons. A swordstaff could breake such an hedghog formation and pose a significant thread to other meele weapons. Not to say, sweden was allwayw low on warriors. @paulodepablo36495 жыл бұрын
madhatten00 The naginata is famous around japan and china but europe mostly favour thinks that gets through armour quicker. A swoed staff maybe redundant in medieval armoured combat due to it being a sword and a polearm. It can pierce but it'll go blunt after just trying to stab through layers upon layers of armour. It'll be combersum to use and would be un-effective in combat. However i can see it as being more favoured in the 18th century as armour has become less fashionable and odd techniques are utalized and written down. It would be awesome to see someone imagining such a weapon in that time period cause it can not only give you distance. It can cut, trust and openup guards at a distance.
