What I love about this movie is that it had racial humor, but it was in a way where all the racist jokes were design to make the racist look bad. You’re laughing because you understand racism is bad, not because of the racism itself. They trusted the audience enough to have the right opinion about it. Not gonna lie White Castle aged incredibly well and I don’t think it’s offensive at all, if anything it takes two minorities and portrays them in a very relatable and positive way.

I agree! Honestly the movie was so far ahead of its time, the jokes were not racially mean or towards minorities in a way that a lot of movies back then did, which was very lazy Comedy. The jokes were so well done against the racists themselves, punching up, and the characters were definitely a break from the stereotype

The film does indeed explore the nuances of the POC experience in America, and the scene where they finally eat at White Castle can be seen as a symbolic act of defiance against racism and discrimination. It is important to note that the film was released in 2004, nearly 40 years after the CORE demonstrations in the Bronx. CORE organized demonstrations in the Bronx against job discrimination and hiring practices at a White Castle restaurant. The demonstrations were held on July 9, 1963. While the Civil Rights Movement had made significant progress in the fight against racial discrimination, there was still a long way to go. The film can be seen as a reflection of the ongoing struggle for racial equality in America. The fact that Harold and Kumar are able to eat at White Castle freely is a sign of progress. However, the fact that the film was even made is a reminder that racism and discrimination are still very real problems in our society. It is an important film that deserves to be seen and discussed. "The universe tends to unfold as it should"

Completely agree with him here, comedy evolves and this is just another evolution it is taking where the focus is less on the shock value and more on making something everyone can enjoy. Obviously there are still comics out there that are popular AND “edgy” (Shane Gillis is blowing up right now and he’s not PC by any means), but in terms of comedy writers the dynamic has shifted. I will also say that I don’t agree with the sentiment that these movies could not be made today, I would argue that their enduring popularity despite the world of comedy changing is a testament that raunchy and offensive humor can still be very funny if done well (we can also look at IASIP as a show that is still continuing despite it being “offensive”, as the writers were smart enough to make the joke the people saying the things, rather than the things themselves).
