Max has this one easily. Ilia will land power shots, and it's going to look bad for Max. But you can't throw big power without also gassing out. Ilia will hurt Max early, but Max is probably the most stubborn fighter in UFC history. He's not going to be intimidated by Topuria, and he won't be fazed by big power shots. In the last 2 rounds, Max will begin to take over, and the judges will award Max with a narrow decision victory, and then they will have 3 or 4 more rematches.

Ilia reminds me of a percussionist or drummer when he strikes. Being a great percussionist means being able to play multiple instruments and have all your limbs move independently all at the same time. The way Ilia is able to move in and out of the pocket and land damage while also being very defensive is so cool. But he’s facing arguably the best boxer in the division/top 5 in the ufc. So eager to see how this one plays out but I give a slight edge to Topuria.

I lean towards Max Holloway for the win. Topuria may knock him out in the early rounds, but Holloway tends to be very elusive and make people miss. I want to point out that people don't mention this, but Volkanovsky was coming off of a MAJOR baseball bat shin to the dome KO loss a whole weight class up. I question what does a healed Volk look like against Topuria? The Volk v Topuria fight was super fast after the Volk v Machachev KO too. I think Topuria does clip Max a couple of times, but Max's chin holds up, he pours on the pressure for the decision win and we welcome in the 2nd Blessed Era.

I think so. If this was 3 years ago, I'd say it would be tougher to say, but we have seen that Max has evolved a bit. He's developed the ability to move off the back foot and fight there, that was a hole in his game that got really exposed in the 3rd Volk fight, he couldn't adjust. In the Arnold Allen fight, he showed he absolutely can, and of course the Gathje fight showed he can do it against a real world class fighter who's known for breaking guys with pressure.

So, while i love the breakdown, I think you missed a big talking point. Max's new found ability to fight going back. It was clear after the third Volk fight, it was a huge hole in the game of Max. We saw in the Arnold Allen fight and of course the Gathje fight, that Max has kinda patched that up. He no longer needa to constantly fo forawrd and run into punishment if he cant find the timing. Max also seems to have some new found power, obviously Gathje was tired and beat up, and TKZ was a bit old, but, we havent seen Max flatline people until now so I think that seeing it was his last couple fights, it might be something he has in the arsenal that he didnt before.

There’s a massive difference between being a tough guy and getting hit with shots you don’t see coming. Max is so good on the feet, his willingness to trade knowing he’s winning exchanges combined with his slick movement, shot selection, and angles, he’s rarely getting hit flush with no regard for return as he’s always challenging on the counter. This will be the first time atleast it will be a new level of striking exchanges with the hands specifically that Max’s flurries and combinations are now a liability if he hangs them too long. I’m surprised I’m 20 minutes in and all I hear is how he “chains” offense. Against another elite boxer that’s not a great thing all the time. That’s going to be the key to this imo. Max will have some early success but he’ll get caught while on the front foot and it’ll go to floor where he won’t be able to get up. He’s never fought someone who is a more devastating counter puncher. Make no mistake ilia is a KO threat off the back specifically whereas in points scoring exchanges it’s close to parity imo. But ut means fck all how good your chin is if it’s a blind shot. Max has a superb chin. Ironically no on is mentioning ilia’s. He ate Jai’s kick that literally landed the exact same way as Leon’s did vs Usman. Carried him across the stage and dumped him then ultimately finished him. Max is a rhythm fighter. Break that rhythm, he’s unable to threaten much. It’s what volk figured out and even you could tell Yair was doing it too. Ilia is fantastic jn the clinch and a problem on the floor. He’s more explosive and again just imo ilia is defensively more responsible. I don’t see where max wins this fight bc it’s going to have to be a 1 punch KO. Ilia will recover if he’s conscious on the ground. Not saying it’s impossible bc that’s silly max is undeniably gifted but he’ll have to have solved the riddle volk out in front of him. Bc you’re insane if you think ilia isn’t just going to pick up where he left off. Max is capable of flipping it, but he got worse in each volk fight. I don’t see a pattern of solving what I think is a straight forward plan to disrupt rhythm combination exchanges and unsettle a guy who relies on pace and steady reads.

I think he was just unlucky with that early cut that impaired his vision for the rest of the fight. Also Volk focused on staying in his blind spot and also seemed to outbox Max to prevent him from setting up long combinations and forced Max to play catchup for most of the fight. Also it felt like Max made some noticeable changes to his fighting style as a result of that loss. Imo he fought pretty different against Allen, TKZ, and Gaethje compared to his last few fights leading up to the trilogy. Planting his feet more for power punches and counters, utilizing his kicks again especially against Gaethje, and seeming to prefer shorter combinations and sharp counter strikes over overwhelming long boxing combinations.

Thing is, I think Tuporia will also be on the back foot if he has studied Maxs game good enough. So first 2 rounds could end up with nothing and quite boring.. I mean honestly Max HAS faced harder hitters than Ilia, I think Ilia has dangerous hands for sure, But truth is he's actually a better grappler than striker. Dude only has 5 knockout finishes, Idk where this narrative that he's some brutal KO artist is coming from. Jeremy Stephens has more knockout wins than Ilia has fights, And many of those wins were one shot, Out cold style KOs. Gaethje & Dustin are two of the most prolific KO artists in LW history. I don't think Ilia's power itself will be anything new to Max, It's just a matter of how well Ilia is able to connect, Max's ability to roll with punches has been key in how he takes shots. But Ilia has very crisp and compact boxing, If Ilia catches Max, I see it being very similar to the Dustin rematch.

I think max is more likely to fall into ilia’s rhythm than the opposite. A lot of volks success against max came from flustering him and forcing max to second guess his offence leading to volk being able to enforce his own game. Ilia brings pressure, feints, power both on the front and back foot, pivots, head movemen, responsible guard and has proven that he can use these skills at a high level. If max gets it done it’ll be his most impressive win to date
