Can Honey Bees Swarm With An UnMated Queen Bee ?
FYI before we begin, This video had to be re released due to issues with the platform and issues which have recently changed. To understand this, please watch this video for a basic understanding as to why. • What Is Bridge Comb Wh...
Often times on the beekeeping boards and groups this question is asked. Many beekeepers getting into this hobby and a few that have been around for a while have the understanding that only a mature mated queen bee will be found in a swarm. The concept has been proven wrong many times in swarms that I have caught as well as a few friends like Jpthebeeman, Schawee, ^28Dirtrooster and even that crazy fun loving guy Jeff Horchoff aka Mr.Ed. We have all had the pleasure of catching multiple queens in a single swarm. But how can this happen you ask? Well that is what I will explain in this video. It is a very easy concept and I hope you take away from this educational bee video exactly how easy it is for the bees to swarm with a virgin queen.
What I found really cool in this video was the discovery of the large brown centipede when I moved an A/C unit in my yard. I believe it had just laid a batch of eggs. Very interesting.
Check out my friends video channels also. Jpthebeeman , 628Dirtroosterbees and Jeff Horchoff for some more great honey bee videos.

Central Maine Same thing happened to me! I had no idea about these cast swarms. Mine broke all the 'rules". I installed said hive into new equipment on memorial day. The one week that I skip full inspections they make cells....lots. They swarmed 4 times starting the first week of august. I did catch all 4. Just like you I was looking in my 3 other hives for cells but none to be found. I combined two of them late fall. They died about a month ago. The only one that is still kicking is the first swarm with original queen. Lessoned learned. Great info.

If the thing at the start of the video has 4 legs per segment (2 legs per side), it is a millipede and they don't sting, although some people can suffer an allergic reaction. Centipedes can give you a nip and sting you, but they are not dangerous. Centipedes have 2 legs per segment (one on either side).

The centipedes we have here in Hawaii feels like being stabbed by a red hot poker when they bite. Those things are straight from hell and should be returned there with all haste by any means available. The more gruesome, the better. I routinely have them under outer covers on my hives and they are returned to hell in pieces via hive tool.

Check it out. I once had a caged queen which I forgot about, my bad, for an entire week. On day 8 of it's imprisonment I thought the hive was swarming, but quickly figured out a swarm was entering the hive. I opened up the hive and it had queen cells all over it and I saw a queen, then another queen. In the end, I had 11 queens in that hive. I made up 8 nucs with these queens (they all looked like virgins). I don't think any of them even took (that has to be my greatest failure of all time---zero from 11 queens). The original imprisoned queen I released in her original hive and that turned out to be an excellent hive. So---ya, there can be many many queens in a swarm.

Hi there. I had some ‘bee company’ remove a hive of bees at my work but there were a few bees left behind. It looks like they just made a new hive! Now what.... is there no way to get them to move? I don’t want to have to call them again. It was a mission to move the hive before abd these people did it for free so I didn’t want to have to call them back....
