Answering the age-old questions we've all asked ourselves hundreds of times. "Can I afford that." In this Talk I dig into what "afford" actually means in the big picture of our own personal financial situation. And NO, I am not a financial advisor. :-) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the "Hickok45 Talks" Channel. This channel is a place for me to just pontificate about random topics that somebody out there might find interesting. I will talk about firearms issues quite a lot, but I'll also exercise my license to talk about any topic I might pretend to know something about.
If you have a topic you'd like me to address, let me know. Doesn't mean I'll address it, but who knows, I might.
Thanks for your support, and I hope you'll subscribe to all three of our channels and keep up with all the brilliance here!!! :-)
/ @hickok45 - Our main channel.
/ @hickok45clips - Our channel where John pulls clips from our existing library of videos.
/ @hickok45talks - This channel where all material is new material where I talk about one specific topic in each relatively short video. Hope you enjoy.

Writing out of Sweden I can say that pistol shooters here are very familiar with your channel and we really enjoy it! If budget is limited focus on a few guns that you really enjoy, like a CZ or Smith & Wesson revolver. They are both mighty popular here. God bless America!

@skootr924 definitely. I went both to college for a Bachelor's then I went to Trade school to become a commercial electrician. I especially enjoyed being paid to go to classes once a week for the whole day. Being paid the same wage to go to class that I did to work in the field was way better than working full time delivering pizzas to pay for my tuition when I was earning my bachelor's degree.. .

@@svbarryduckworth628 Awesome!! I learned silkscreen when I was younger. That's part of my retirement plan. I've been a jack of all trades since (but a master of none) over the plethora of occupations (worked for an electrician also). Work hard so you can play harder.

Hi Hickok,my dad told me about the envelope system. I used it when I went on my own when married and showed my kids that system. Still use a form of it still today at 69 years young. It does take some discipline not to keep tapping one of the envelopes.

Hickok45 Talks.. Just subscribed to this channel too. I had that happen to me a couple times in the early days. Go on vacation or spend the "extra" on something and then something else tears up, goes out or whatever and leaves you saying "well now what". Fortunately it always worked out for us. I had a friend that when he got paid each week if he didn't have a bill due that week he would blow all of his money on stupid stuff. If he had a bill he would pay it but if not....money gone. No savings account, no emergency fund, no nothing.

I can’t even afford food, but you have to eat. We’ve cut to the bone just to pay the bills. I use envelopes to divide cash up so I know I’ll have the money for each bill, food and gas. Good advice👍

Another question to ask is “if I spend this money how long will I need to replace it”? It’s asking about cash flow as well as what’s in your account. If I want a $3000 vacation, can I replace that money in 6 months? A year? Three years?

A better question is if it fits the budget, is congruent with our long-term economic plans, is necessary and/or there are other things on the agenda that are more important.

Who four years ago could have seen just how expensive everything would become? Who has any actual idea how much purchasing power their savings will have at the point they think they will be ready to retire? That being the case, how much do you actually need to retire?

The problem with buying guns isn't even the gun anymore. It's the obligation to buy ammo over time. And 308 is just too expensive.

I realize the guns I enjoy the most are the cheaper ones I don't mind breaking or running up the mileage. Like the SKS, savage axis, 380, 1911,870 etc. the more pricey stuff is more stressful to own than anything. I used to want mp5 and kriss vectors and shit. Not no more 😂

I was having a vibrating sound from my computer that I have had for about four years now. The question became: Can I afford a new computer or should I replace the bad part? Cost of a new computer at the caliber I have: $900 and well above. (No current sales going on) Cost of replacing the power supply unit of the same caliber: $70. I took the self repair route and saved at least $830. Of course YMMV.

And the averages in populations like this are always skewed upward due to the small percentage of people with incredible net worth. The actual median numbers in this category are much less.

Yeah, lots of obvious questions we could ask all these folks who actually make decent money but don't have 400 bucks for an emergency, at least according to surveys and statistics we hear about. Apparently, there are quite a few folks who just mindlessly write checks or pay bills as they come in but have no concept of a budget.
