The reason why you can hit ghost with Fang (insert attack because i forgot the name) That deals a fixed damage = 50% of oppenents life Thats also why dragons rage (the only dragontype attack in Gen1) Is not effective against dragons because it deals only 40damage Also Gen1 is broken *shrug

I have a really funny incident to relate. Pokemon Yellow was my first Pokémon game and I had no idea Magikarp was an absolute useless pokemon unless it evolved at level 20. When the Magikarp salesman offered to sell it to me, I became really happy as the rock and ground types in Mt. Moon were giving me a hard time. My new Magikarp was pathetic and it couldn't even learn my newly found water gun TM. So when I saw that my Ratatta was compatible with it, I instantly taught him that move. Now I wiped my way out of Mt. Moon with the help of a Ratatta with water gun 😂

Fun Fact: The reason the Viridian Forest encounters took so long is because some grass tiles have flowers on them, and on those tiles you can't encounter Pokemon.

It's so surreal to come back to his first Pokemon challenge run to see how far MDB's grown, and only realizing wow! The quality of his videos has vastly improved! While already starting at a very high quality tier!!! And also being hit with overwhelming nostalgia because god damn. I remember watching this when it came out. And now the KZbin Algorithm/Helix Fossil bit is a staple of his channel, as are other little features and quirks like the script writing + reading at the very beginning of the video :) Anyways I'll keep cut this short and say we love you MDB! 7:16 people may think this is the world's dumbest bug -- "how can you possibly divide a value when you meant to multiply it?!" Let me tell you, as a programmer, I realized *exactly* what went wrong here and it may not be quite as dumb as you would expect. Computers use binary, which means numbers are stored as 1s and 0s (transistors being on and off). To count in binary, you would go 000, 001, 010, 011, 100, 101, 110, 111... etc. You may notice in binary that 1 is 001, 2 is 010, and 4 is 100. You would also notice 3 is 011 and 6 is 110. Yep, multiplying by a factor of 2 is the same as shifting the bits to the left. Notice I said to the _left_ Shifting to the right would be the same as dividing by a factor of 2. Instead of having to do a more complex multiplication or division calculation that could take a processor multiple cycles to complete, shifting bits can almost always be done in a single cycle. So bit shifting for multiplication and division by factors of 2 is one of the most straight forward performance optimizations you can make. Some poor programmer mixed up the two left shifts to multiply by 4 with two right shifts when coding the logic for Focus Energy. One little mental mix up and you get a bug that seems absolutely stupid at its surface.

Dig is only normal effectiveness against grass/poison types. The "super effective" sound effect is a glitch. Similar to how Weedle's poison sting sounds super effective against another Weedle even though it is actually 1x.

7:16 - So *THAT'S* why I never noticed any change when playing Pokemon Yellow!!! I never knew what the attack and Dire Hit did as a kid, and when I finally looked up the move later on and saw that it affected your Crit chance I always ignored it because my assumption based on its effects in the first game were that the attack barely had any effect on the crit ratio, which is exactly the impression one would get if the crit chance was actually being *decreased* rather than *increased!* When I recently started playing Pokemon Uranium I was like "Geez, I do *not* remember Focus Energy being *this* effective, did it get buffed when I stopped playing the games after Gale of Darkness?" In my final battle with blue in Pokemon red his last Pokemon Blastoise managed to get my Charizard to low health and had the perfect opportunity many times to finish Charizard off but diddent and instead spammed tail whip giving my Charizard the chance to slowly finish Blastoise off winning me the battle and the main game.

Pokemon can use HMs while fainted so you could just faint them before battles using wild encounters.

oof, this was so much harder than it needed to be xD Minor adjustments for anyone who wants to imitate: -the water gun TM in Mt moon would make quick work of the early hikers, even with Ratatas crummy special. -Dig would have guaranteed easy victories against poison types, including ghosts. it's a 100 power move in gen 1, and only vulnerable to swift. -anyone who wants to try itemless like pikasprey would, doubleteam-rest-body slam-blizzard would probably be the moveset. evasion is way more broken in gen 1 than later games.

I'm currently doing a Pidgey-Only run in Crystal Clear, which actually makes the second run after getting the first 8 badges a lot tougher. No more level 40 Kanto Gym Leaders with 3 pokemon, but instead the 16th gym you go to (you can pretty much pick and choose the order you go after things. A lot of previously blocked off routes have ways to get to them without necessitating HM's or long trips. Trainers are matched to the level of Badges you have, so the only worry is wild pokemon, which aren't scaled) will almost always have a legendary of some kind that matches their type, or some kind of really strong pokemon of their type if no legendary is known for that type. So yeah, I'd love to see you do some challenge runs in Crystal Clear, because a lot would change from a standard Gen 2 run. There's also new tutors and stuff, too, and new trainers to fight that you can test your challenge-ness against, most of which can be fought once a day. Also, they re-added maps back to Pokemon Crystal, like the original Mt. Moon (with the square still intact as well), the Pokemon Mansion Ruins (inside the volcano), Viridian Forest, and even a little easter egg at the Game Corner. The mix-ups would make challenge runs kinda interesting, I think, and make things like the Rattatta or Sunkern-only runs rather difficult. I'm also doing 'Character' challenge runs, since you can kinda choose how you look in that game. I currently also have a run where I'm using Yellow from the manga's actual team she used in the manga. With pokemon like Butterfree and Raticate alongside some powerhouses like Dodrio and Omastar, it's an interesting run.
