I found it funny that he wrote off Voltorb for a bit, and then it was so high a level. Also funny given that Lt. Surge's partner in Pokémon Masters is actually Electrode.

@@066kshitizvsingh4 yea voltorb and electrode are very often slept on when it comes to team building, but it makes sense that mdb doesn't respect them since they're pretty bad in solo runs. its ability to deal with key threats alone makes it worth it, since nothing out speeds electrode, you can always get off thunder wave and you also have a good chance to live one hit (due to how EVs work in gen-1) so you can then switch out to keep electrode in play as a revenge killer OR you can explode on said key threat, whichever you prefer.

Pikachu is not exclusive to the Viridian Forest, it can also be found at the Power Plant (though that’s post-surf). Voltorb is also found there, but it can also be encountered pre-surf on route 10, which includes a northern patch of grass in RBYFRLG.

Not in Yellow. In Red, Blue, Fire Red, and Leaf Green Voltorb can be found in Route 10 but not in Yellow. Edit: I know it doesn't apply to this run but you had it in your abbreviation.

@@tinkerer3399 You are correct. In Yellow, Magnemite appears in its place. Though looking back that version list was supposed to be about the grass patch, which is part of route 9 instead in GSC/HGSS.

Although I'm sure having 2 Pikachu early on was nice, since there's no move deleter in gen 1 you could've just boxed one Pikachu before it hit level 9, and it would only have Thunder Shock and Growl, and then hit it with a Thunder Stone and teach it Thunderbolt by TM.

The problem is that Pikachu (future Raichu) is going to be the main source of damage after getting the TM for Thunderbolt. Holding off on training it completely until the Thunder Stone is available in Celadon City means an even bigger grind to catch up levels until the mid 20's. Better to have it available throughout the early part, especially after Lt. Surge's gym when it gets Thunderbolt in its kit.

Here’s a good trick when you’re using a Pokémon with the guts ability: keep it poisoned off of a wild Pokémon with something like poison gas and give it leftovers to counter the poison damage and keep the attack boost

Someone else in the comments suggested trying to mimic Lt Surge’s AI, and it gave me an idea. What if, instead using of a particular Pokémon or team for a challenge run, you used an NPC trainer’s AI? For example, you could do a “Blaine’s AI” run, where you have to roll a die/generate a random number before each turn and that determines your move (say, roll of 1 = use a full heal, roll of 2-3 = use a status/stat-lowering move, etc). You could pick your own team and moves to add some strategy into it, as long as their move sets contained one of each type of move the AI needs to select from.

You should try a wrestling moves only run where you only use attacks that are similar to wrestling moves. In my head I see Tackle as a Spear, moves like Bind or constrict as submissions, Double team as a reference to tag teams. Plus you have access to a lot of fighting type moves and of course - Body Slam.

I love the single Pokemon Challenges but finding a way to use a team was cool. Only problem is, which fossil did you take? I know you can't use it but it would be cool if you said it every time.

I think its so funny that in the Giovanni gym battle, your strongest by far pokemon, is the designated growl spammer and the 2 much weaker ones are actually the ones taking the bosses down. This is why pokemon is great, there are so many unique situations you can find yourself in, even in the most limited generation.

Adding to what I hope are a deluge of comments mentioning that the Rare Candy usage is a blessing. Thank you for taking care of your health. The video didn't suffer at all because of the usage, if anything getting to see every fight at a new 5 level multiple was *more* interesting than a jump cut with "Ten levels later, On the twenty-third try, we got THIS lucky run" (Not that that's bad, mind. :P) Seriously though. You've gone way out of your way to make sure these challenges are as 'fair' as possible, and as hard as possible for yourself already. (Look at Exeggutor!) and rare candies don't detract anything but the time investment, and I don't think anyone watches to hear "I spent the next three days fighting zubats to get to level 55". Please please please use rare candies whenever you're okay doing so, especially if it's for your health.

For the plural question (4:15), you got it right: the plural of Pikachu is still Pikachu. Pokemon are like sheep or deer: the plural is the same as the singular no matter whether you have one Dragonite or a dozen Dragonite.

I’m actually curious to see how this run would be in Fire Red, since you said that the Ground gym would be even more of a nightmare. The movesets also get a lot more interesting. While Raichu loses Thunderbolt, the whole team gets access to Shock Wave, which is much weaker, but at least it can’t miss. Aside from that, Voltorb still has Screech, Tackle, and Sonic Boom, Raichu gets Quick Attack, and both Raichu and Pikachu get Growl swapped out for Double Team.

Couple of Challenges for ya MDB: -Trying to beat Pokemon Black with a team of only 1 Patrat? (Naming it "Bidoof?" is also a good nickname idea for it... and making it be in place of Snivy would give you Emboar... probably the hardest to fight) - Trying to beat Pokemon Soul Silver with a Team of only 1 Magby might be fun but would make Bugsy an absolute BREEZE... - Trying to beat Pokemon White with only One Barboach could be hard.. if you choose to replace the Starter with the one that gives you Cilan as the first gym leader - Trying to beat Pokemon X with a team of only one Binacle (could be interesting since I haven't seen ya do Gen 6 Runs)

A gen 1 mono-poison run could be fun. Gives you the opportunity to use some less popular mons like Venomoth, Muk, Weezing, and Arbok. I would say to use Koga's team, but his team is pretty catered toward evasion strats, which might make things a bit too easy. If a normal poison run is too easy, you could either do first forms only or only pure poison types.

"Rolls dice and decides to use one (xSpeed)" would actually make a fun/frustrating challenge imo. Like, having to roll a dice for your every action. Get a good encounter? Too bad, you rolled to run. About to faint? Too bad, you didn't roll to switch OR potion. Need a specific move to claim victory? If you're lucky enough to roll Fight, you still have only a 25% chance to roll your winning move. I think this kind of challenge might be TOO cruel, though lmao

Here an idea of a challenge, beat a pokémon game with only the best HM Slaves: - By that I mean Pokémon able to learn at least 4 or more HM moves. - They are not necessarily the best state wise. - No obligation to use the HM as a move can be anything else. It's the pokemon who's matter the most not the moveset (Well except if they can learn at least 4 HM) here. - To make it harder no duplicate pokémon are allowed even in the same family.

Even though you bit your lip, the voice-over sounded just fine. The wrath of biting your lip usually strikes full force a couple of days or so after it happened. Trust me, I've been through it, and it is NOT fun. Anyways, great video!

Congrats on taking the candy pill. In all honesty in any challenge where grinding is possible rare candies just saves time. Worst case scenario you miss out on ev or stat exp, but ev training/using stat xp boosting items should be fine.

Also, p-traps are incredibly easy to fix. You can just replace the part. Plumbing surprisingly isn't very complicated. I worked at a motel as maintenance/housekeeping. I learned that a lot of people have no idea how their toilets work. I have no prior experience as maintenance. I basically had the brute force figure out how plumbing, HVAC, and electrical wiring works alone. I did get zapped really good by an a/c outlet once. When I told the property owner, he was more surprised that I was alive and the outlet "let me go." My right arm had even more nerve ending issues for about a week. Every time I pointed with my index, I felt like electricity was shooting out. 😅
