I say this without a shred of irony or jest; This is a fascinating look at the context sensitivity of knowledge. I think we can all agree that MFP is one of the all-time top SMB3 players and probably knows more about the ins and outs of the game than the developers _remember_ at this point... I read somewhere that the characters in Doki Doki Panic were unable to run. And since SMB 2 was essentially a palate swap of it, I attempted (and completed) a run-less win--beating all 20 boards. This seems like a MUCH harder challenge.

Free coins in SMB3 aren't actually sprites: they're part of the background. When you collect one, the game replaces it with sky, hence why they're never used under water. That's also the reason the background pixels stay yellow in underground levels when you collect coins: it doesn't change the palette of that block of cells.

That's kinda ironic... given that there is in fact plenty of coins in the water in SMB3, especially in World 3. You can see one of the coins in this video at 13:40. There's also coins in World 3 Level 1, but it was cut out of the video. Oh and at 1:03:42 there are coins as well. Even chat points it out but it's somehow ignored.
