@@ThePond2023 The hit detection is simply not perfect. There was no special trick to it, such as the end of 7-8. Setting it up the same way on console would have provided the same result. It's just that a TAS can be riskier and be as close as possible to enemies without taking damage, while real time runners need/should be a bit more careful.

The glitched animation state is for when Mario extends his arms while running, not for kicking shells.

Presumably, you could ACE a frog suit into World 1 with a couple of more minutes slapped on the run, pretty frivolous for a TAS, so I'd consider the hack to be a shortcut and not really cheating.

The frog suit at least looks cute and has some utility in that it helps you swim better. The Spring Mushroom from Mario Galaxy is worse in every way. Spring Mario is literally just Mario coiled up in a giant spring, the powerup is very unwieldy to control, and while it's supposed to be required, everything you're supposed to use it for can be done with base Mario.

I remember having the Mario 3 Nintendo Power guide as a kid, so literally all of the things I've learned about SMB3 outside of that guide have come from watching your videos. I really wish I knew where it was. I know it's not in great shape, the spine is held together with packaging tape, so it's probably not really worth anything, but just to have it in my hands again would be amazing.

Around 2000 or so I took my NES up to a cybercafe. I did the fast airship in world 8 with the frog suit and impressed my friends. This makes me want to try to go thru the whole game with the frog suit!

You can do a legit frog suit run on SNES version. Just get frog suit in inventory, then save and exit game. Then, start from World 1 with frog suit in inventory.

Yes, there are several times, mostly in forts, where I had to delay in order to avoid damage. 2-F being the first instance, 6-F2 is another. I would also be able to beat 8-F, though it would likely be faster to skip with a cloud anyway.

I did this as a kid only to find out I couldn’t beat the game cause there is that one castle where you need to duck and get under the spikes. I had frog suit and no damage game genie codes so I was effectively stuck lol.

it would actually be kinda neat to see a speedrun where you have to first get the powerup the first chance you can get it and then do the rest of the run without losing that powerup. it's dumb and kinda like doing a "larvetar only" challenge for pokemon silver but you just play through the game until get get larvetar where the only challenge left is to defeat Red.
