I've lived in the woods for three years now, so as an expert [hahaha], I want to say that this video is a great summary of what to look for when harvesting deadwood for your fire. Concise, yet detailed. Very nice work.

When you stand on a log lying on the ground in the woods and it crumbles while all the woodlice scramble - might be too far gone 😂

I find I can get rid of punky old wood by just mixing it in a little bit at a time with the better stuff. Pitch a log of it into a well established fire every now and again, but never expect it to start or maintain the fire by itself. In a roaring fire, it will burn fast and doesn't give off much heat, but as long as you have plenty of decent wood already burning, you can still get it to give you whatever little energy it has left in it. So if you find yourself with a few half rotten logs or a pile of firewood that has kind of gone to seed, you can get rid of it that way.

this was very interesting. Those large dead trees do have a purpose. They serve as nesting sights for woodpeckers. In Iowa ,for example ,the red headed woodpecker has declined dramatically from clearing of deadwood.

The species of wood matters also. Here in the Northeast, all of the ash trees are dying. Ash can be burned with very little seasoning time.
@bellakaldera3305
@bellakaldera3305 Ай бұрын
I burned a lot of Ash this winter, it's nearly the best. One wood not to burn is Poplar (Popple), because it pops and throws sparks, aside from having poor heat value, the Beavers like it best though!

Nice vid, thanks for posting but can I add another factor to the mix? Dead wood plays a very important part in the ecology of woodlands. Lying or standing, it provide niches to a wide range of fungi, insects, their predators and hole-nesting birds and mammals. Standing dead wood can be a high-rise of slightly different conditions, moisture content, sun exposure, etc. and therefore can offer a wide range of niches which change over time. If you possibly can, it's a good thing to keep a proportion of dead material, standing and lying within an area of woodland. Maybe these can be in corners that are difficult to get to. Avoid being 'tidy' for the sake of it.

we just moved into a property in upstate new york. . only 1 acre but access to a bunch of woods with old trees and lots of dead trees. i would never cut a live tree. i want them to grow tall and old. i got permission from neighbors lands to thin the dead wood and clear the property. i got bout 4 cords of dry wood that i can burn this season. mostly black locust and maple. hopefully make it through the winter. save my money for a better wood stove. good information. cheers.

Good info. Some of it I hadnt considered. I just purchased a woodburning fireplace insert for my home. I thought the dead old trees on my property were perfect for my stove. Guess they're only for emergency. That's kinda what we bought the thing for anyway what with the insanity happening today. God bless you too Mr.

Wood is wood. Standing dead wood is the best as it is the most seasoned and dry wood you can find. Logs that are dead and lying on the ground naturally absorb water from the ground and rot...become punky. Noty good wood. Best with those is cut and split and wait till it drys a few months.

Depends on how long they've been on the ground. I've cut up and burned plenty of downed trees. If a standing dead is too big for me to cut, I wait. Just cut up one that I had been keeping an eye on for a few years now. It came down in a recent wind storm.

I’m staring at a HUGE dead pecan tree still standing in my back yard. I’ve been curious as to whether or not this thing would be good for my wood heater. I’ll have to get a professional with a bucket truck to come in and piece mill it for me, then I can handle the bucking and splitting from there. I’ve heard good things about pecan wood, so we’ll know once we stick a saw to it. Thank you for your presentation. It makes perfect sense.

get a ratchet strap / come along and a rope and tie it on the dead tree before you cut it to put tension on the direction you want it to fall.
@durhamholtmeier4413
@durhamholtmeier4413 4 жыл бұрын
Also...live or dead itd always a good idea to use one or a few ratchet straps as a collar around the tree...no one knows if the tree will barber chair and kill you. I lost an expert tree friend to a barber chair...it speared him through the body and stuck in to the ground.....a strap or 3 is cheap insurance against barber chair split
@American-OutdoorsNet

Thanks for watching and you make a great point. I used the dead fall that was only partially grounded as an example of a dangerous situation, even though the tree was nearly grounded. I too lost a neighbor to a tree cut that went wrong. Always think two steps ahead.

I've been using a reasonably hefty chain for the same reason to prevent barber chair from happening. Stronger and quicker to put in & undo.
