I have hallux rigidus and was misdiagonised as a planter facitus. Even though looking at MRI report now there is no mention of planter issue. So, my "recovery" post prp injection contained loads of calf raises and big toe "strengthening" exercises Which, surprise suprise has accelerated my big toe arthritis beyond repair. There really are some horribly bad medical "profesionals" out there

Thank you for providing various modification ideas in your videos. Generally speaking, with proper care can the progression of hallux rigidus be halted, or does it always progress to a severe form regardless of foot care? Thank you.

Hello Pattee, Thank you for watching and for your comments. Whether or not the progression could be halted depends up the process causing the joint damage being halted.

How to deal with this problem and crónic insertional tendinitis in the Achilles due tò abnormally big Heel Spur in the insertion of the Achilles? I can't go down as you mention but if I do normal CALF raises I trigger the Big toe joint problem. If I don't do CALF raises my Achilles doesn't bear normal walks and get painful for months. It Is of some utility tò Just do CALF raises in a medium rigid shoe without raising too much to not stress too much the Big toe and maintaining isometric tensión? Thank you

Same problem. After years of Hallux Rigidus I developed chronic Achilles tendinosis, chronically tight calves, and calf raises help keep the Achilles pain away. I do it in cushiony Hoka shoes, accepted that it may still bring the Chellectomy or Toe Fusion date closer.

What about hallux limitus? Aren't calf raises good for restoring range of motion of the hallux?

Only if they don't jam and further damage the joint. All depends on the state of the injure and stage of hallux limitus. Depends, it could make it better, or worse.

@@DocOnTheRun What do you mean by "jam the joint"? I have bilateral hallux limitus, very painful 24/7, but I can perform calf raises and it doesn't feel particularly bad once my feet are warmed up. The range of motion on both of my big toes is still ~90% normal

Hello Stuti, thank you for watching and for posting your question. It all depends upon your specific foot biomechanics and how those exercises affect the big toe joint. Any exercises that increase the compression of the cartilage or decrease the range of motion in the joint could further damage it. It's important to avoid accelerating the arthritis.

Would this modification work for someone who has had MTP joint fusion as a result of hallux rigidus?

Thanks for watching, and for commenting! It potentially could work, but can't say because it would depend upon the type of fusion and the stage of healing. Best to get clearance from your surgeon first.

I had an MTP fusion 3 yrs ago. I use a heavy (pressure treated is heavier than untreated) 4x4 post, like you use to build fences. I found a 3' piece lying in my ally and took it home. Bingo! It's heavy enough to be stable. I keep it in front of a desk for additional stability, and it's on carpet so it doesn't slide. Standing on it with both feet, the balls of my feet on the edge away from me, when I rise up, there is nothing hitting my toes. And the post is narrow enough that my heels can drop low. It takes a bit to get used to it so you don't roll the post, having something to hold onto is important. Rolling that post could easily lead to another injury, so if you try this just be careful. I can actually roll to balance the edge of the post up on it's edge easily now, but I always have that desk and a bookcase to grab. I'm a short woman, 72 yrs old.
