How else can I connect my wireless mesh router devices without using the network adapters as a wired backhaul system if I don't have ethernet or coax cable outlets in my home? Is there a wireless way, can I use wifi pods instead? What do you think?

Ceertification includes also distance parameters not just speed parameters. So Cat5e Can handle 10Gbps for 164 feet (55m) you only need Cat6 if you want to go over that.
@jonreed54315 ай бұрын
That's not true. The number you listed is for CAT6(10Gbps / 55 m), not CAT5e. CAT5e can do 10 gig on very small runs but is not rated for that distance. CAT5e and CAT6 are similar in most implementations, and if not done cheaply, the results in this video would be possible. It's likely there's very low interference here.

I wired my home with Cat5E about 20 years ago. 2 story home so I can run the wires either from the crawlspace up the wall or attic down the wall. I more recently upped my internet to fiber 2 Gb symmetrical. Due to the short Cat5E runs I am able to see 2.5 to devices capable of those speeds. I had planned on updating the ethernet to perhaps Cat6A but in the end didn't need to.

According to ISO/IEC 11801, the minimum UTP cable specification for supporting 2.5GBASE-T Ethernet is Category 5e, which when properly installed and maintained, can support 2.5GBASE-T over distances up to 100 meters. Higher speeds like 5GBASE-T and 10GBASE-T require Cat 6 cables however over shorter distances.
@GregoryWilson035 ай бұрын
Regular Cat5e cable is only "certified" at 1Gbps (or 1000Mbps) speeds. It can theoretically handle more than that, but it definitely won't be able to push all of that through it's rated 328ft of max cable length. So long as your runs are shorter than that it can definitely push up to 10Gbps of throughput, but the consistency of it is not 100% and you may experience packet loss occasionally. For 2.5Gbps speeds though, Cat5e is more than enough!
@estusflask9825 ай бұрын
Cat5e can do 2.5 and 5 gigabit at 328ft (100m) and 10 gigabit at short distances.
@patrickmallett82575 ай бұрын
Cat 6 and 7 contain better shielding to prevent crosstalk between the 4 twisted pairs wires in the cable. The Cat 5e cable will accept and run at 10 Gb but you will probably be getting crosstalk errors more frequently. In other words, the network will be less reliable. Other factors such as distance may also contribute to less reliability. However, Cat 5e can handle ethernet 2.5 speeds with minimal increase in crosstalk.

I wired my house a long time ago with a spool of CAT5e and a spool of CAT6, in parallel. (I just happened to have some good solid copper CAT5e on hand, so I used it.) For my home office, I had been running Gigabit over a decade on a CAT5e line with zero issues. Recently I tried running 2.5 Gbps on it and it seemed to work fine initially, but I noticed it would sometimes drop to Gigabit. Luckily there was also that CAT6 line so I tried that, and it's been rock solid at 2.5 Gbps. I believe the runs are only about 20 metres or so. BTW, I've run gigabit over CAT3 and it worked perfectly, but that was just a 2 metre cable.

Then when the light turns green and internet comes back I can plug them back into other ports again. I hope this helps anyone having similar problems. 😮

@joeythedime18384 ай бұрын
You can, and I have tested it, run 10GBASE-T across Cat5e cable up to certain very short distances like 20 feet without any errors or issues. At longer lengths you will have dropped packets galore. That does not mean that Cat5e will Certify at any length to the Cat6A specification...it will fail dramatically, in fact. This also does not mean you should exceed the ANSI/TIA specifications at any distance. You should not. The standards are there for a reason.

2.5Gbit connectivity is definitely not overkill when you have a medium to large size family hammering Netflix, prime video, steam downloads, console downloads, multiple WIFI6e/7 access points and NAS server hanging off your hardwired network and multiple residential IP CCTV cameras operating 24hrs a day. Its also really good to have if you already have proper fibre to the home broadband and you're getting like 1Gbps down and up which can be had very cheap in certain parts of the world for as little as £26 a month and 3Gbps down and upload speeds which can be had for as little as £56 a month. Its a must!!!

@sgtjyf015 ай бұрын
Firstly, no one calls it "Category 5 cables", we just call it "Cat 5e" (cables). 2.5Gbps are rated to run on standard Cat5e cables, basically if you are running Gbe speeds, you can run 2.5gbe. Cat6 cables can support up to 10Gbe up to 50m and Cat6a supports 10Gbe up to 100m. In practice, a relatively short run of 10-20m will allow Cat5e to run at 10Gbe speeds. Though you might need to re-terminate both ends with Cat6 rated connectors.

I wish 10GbE switches weren't so overpriced, my network setup is kludge central. Basically 2.5GbE switch and to each PC, and for my main desktop PC, I use an additional 10GbE NIC and a direct Ether et connection to my home NAS build, since the cost of those NICs have come down a decent amount, but 10 GbE switches are still insanely overpriced. While there are some cheaper suctions such as switches that will use QSF+ modules, the issue is the really cheap aliexpress ones will often not have good cooling for the modules, thus is you buy a one of those switches and a 10GbE module, you will notice the module get insanely hot. I just want a good affordable switch with at least 3 10GbE ports already set to use RJ45, and at least 4 2.5GbE ports.

OK, I need to ask a question here. WHY do you need such a high speed setup over your network cables?? The ONLY reason I can think here is to get the transfer speeds to/from your NAS drive doing video work directly on the NAS. Because 1Gig is MORE than enough to stream 4K video to all your rooms and still have plenty of headroom for the rest since your ISP is only at 1Gb service currently.

I have a home Wifi network at home with Cat5e coming from my Fiber ONT service (2.5G) and ran in the attic for about 30-40 feet to a location in the family room plugged into a BE95 from TP-Link. Initially I was very upset with my ISP Fidium as I have known Cat5e as being rated at approximately 1G throughput. My question is, should I expect only around 1G from a WiFi perspective as the Cat5e can only do that or can it do more such as the full 2.5G from my ISP? Should I update the Cat5e to Cat6? I have noticed that you did a local network test with Cat5e that did do up to 10G, but that was local. Is it the same for ISP signal as well? Sorry that as savvy in this area and really need help before I cancel the lower costing ISP?

You shouldn’t expect to get a gig wireless. Wireless is for convenience. Don’t blame your provider for slow wireless speeds. Internet providers only guarantee speeds straight off the fiber gateway. They aren’t responsible for your wireless connection thoughout your home.

Not sure why you say that a 2.5Gbit home network is overkill for most of us. With servers, NASes and more 2.5Gbit might not be fast enough for many of us. I've been running 10G to servers and workstations for many years and put in 25Gbit fibre between servers and NASes. None of it is terribly expensive anymore. You should have kept your 10Gbit stuff, especially after determining that your in-wall wiring would support it.

I'm so tired seeing those videos about how "much" speed can I get on 5e cables ..... duuh. It's physics people, physics, not magic. A cable is just a conductor. If it has enough thickness, min 5 mm, and is not very long, which is the case in over 97% of typical home users, it will run with 10Gbps not only 2,5Gbps. The only requirment is the material of the conductor. If you installed CCA, which alluminium plated with copper, you gonna have bad luck, but if you installed coppe there are no issues ! It's as simple as that !
