TY Carl , Ordered that Jump pack , as you say so handy ,than Humping big heavy Jump leads about or those big jump Packs , I've looked at the Spec, i have a 5Ltr Muscle Car ,so its a Win Win for me. Carl, I really like your location to try out the ten meter band, I found it to be very quiet lately at my home qth, but the day is still young and I am sure things will pickup, and I really liked you quick lunch menu, quite appetizing. And Carl, I would run a portable radio such as the Icom 705 from 15.5 volts, checking the manual first for the max voltage. I have a Xiegu G90 and have run it from a Lithium ion battery running 15.5 plus volts with no problems, but I would always check the users manual for the max voltage first. Just a quick one here Carl. A great little device for a battery under volt is the West Mountain Radio N8XJX Super Booster... It will take a battery output of 11 volts or so and boost it to a constant 13.8 volts. And it can handle up to 40 amps. Been using one for years on all my Icom rigs. As a lot of them don’t like seeing anything under 12.5 volts or so... My 106MKIIG and IC-7000 will cut out at anything below 12.5v.

Great setup, Carl. I enjoy your videos and experiments. Glad I'm not the only guy that's cautious of dead battery. I regularly charge my jump-start pack, and recently replaced the truck battery with an AGM. I also tend to watch the battery voltage meter I put on the dash. 73 de N6BVZ/4 wil in North Georgia

This gave me an actual LoL moment as I too used to do this at lunch, but my setup was to listen only, to everything I could in that space and time, then...back to work. I have a large 1/4 wave wip with a strong magnetic mount that I only could use while stationary.

Hi Carl, possibly worth measuring the voltage of that TopDon with a load on it as it may well drop. Also have you heard of 145 Alive? It’s an activity usually held on a weekend to create some activity on 2m FM simplex channels. Do a search on KZbin for it and also the organiser Tim G5TM. 73’s

Greetings Carl: According to Icom’s website, the IC-705 can handle up to 15.87 volts DC on an external power supply. Now would I personally run the 705 on 15+ volts DC? Probably not, unless I had no other way to power it. And then I’d probably try to lower the voltage by connecting the jump pack to the vehicle battery and draining some of that extra voltage off...

Yes the lifep04 pack can be as high as 16.4v fully stuffed think the kenwood 890 will cut off at 18v I’ve ran 16v into my ftdx10 and 16v into my 991a

Hi Carl, I have seen many great videos of yours where your using that little amplifier with your IC-705. I have always meant to ask you what make and model amplifier that is your using. And do they make a higher powered one around 200 to 250 watts... I want to give my IC-7300 a bit more push at the antenna for my own portable operations...

I use RM Italy HLA 150 but only push it to about 90 watts and not fully as some I read somewhere that the output is cleaner when not pushed to the max.

Why would you use the whips as dipoles? That I don't understand. They are mobile whips and for best performance should be used vertically. Once you are not in a noisy location the vertical whips will work, watch Tim, G5TM. Still don't understand the context of using whips as dipoles!

My understanding is they are a little bit more directional and it changes the polarisation. I’ll have a go anyway and chat about it, I’ll have a read up on it as well.

It produces a compact dipole you can mount on a pole or tripod in your garden or out portable, without having to have a ground plane. Each "hamstick" is an electrical quarter wave.

FT8 could be heard faintly which given the circumstances I should have tried that as voice would require a huge set up
