Can I Get This Rover 75 Started?

After months of nothing happening, I decided it was time I had at least a go of fixing this 75 diesel. It's had a whole load of new bits including the punps but still nothing. I figured that the injectors must be at fault...

From working in a Rover garage in the early 2000’s I remember quite a few 75’s coming in as breakdowns and our 75 man replacing one or both of the fuel pump and sender units under the back seats? I’m not intelligent enough to say how he diagnosed these but he did many to great success! Best of luck. 👍🏻

I used to drive a lovely Rover 75. WF52JYR, a White Gold Club CDT Auto with the BMW engine (the good one, the M47). It took me to Portugal and back in Summer 2016. I sold it the following year, and I've long since regretted it, as the bellend I sold it to, drove it into the ground and scrapped it soon afterwards.😢

From memory the MAF sensors were prone to feck up. Pieburgh MAF units were crap unless you had a RonBox. Genuine Bosch are best. A knackered MAF can wreek havoc with diesels. That's my experience anyway.

Bonus spinning around in the intro too! 😁 Amidst the echoes of clanging tools and the scent of oil, the haunting strains of a gentle guitar filled the air, casting an enchanting spell over the tinkering. It was an unusual juxtaposition, the serene melody weaving its way through the mechanical machination! Then a seemingly random 'cock-a-doodle-do' ... could it be a sign? Perhaps the music was too serene for diesel? I replayed that section while 'Ride of the Valkyries' but the engine still wasn't fixed! 🙁 WD40, thousands of uses according to the tin! There's also a helpline number. I'm tempted to call and ask them for a list! 😄

I had a 75 diesel for a while that wouldn't start. I took me a couple of weeks on and off to figure it out. In the inlet to the High Pressure Fuel Pump there's a check valve. The car had stood for a couple of years and this was gummed up and stuck closed. Might be worth checking? Looking into the engine bay, the HFPF is near the front of the car, too the left and slightly rear of the oil filter housing. On top of it are two 90 degree rubber pipes attached to some hardlines. The left hand (looking into the engine bay) pipe is the inlet. Disconnect the rubber pipe from the HPFP, access is tricky, and use a parallel pin punch or screwdriver to check that the check valve ball is springing back and forth. I had to undo the three bolts for the power steering fluid reservoir and swing it out the way to improve access. Hope this might help.

A weak battery is giving you an 'EP' signal on the dash. I reckon something in either the ECU or the box ECU is barring the car from starting. If you haven't already, try another known strong battery.

Failed fuel pressure regulator seals (part no F01M100278) have been known to cause a no-start on 75 diesels.

I thought I detected a squeak as you were trying to start the engine.. That would indicate you might have a mouse nest in the foo-foo valve. Flame throwers are the way to remove them but I'd advise you get a fire extinguisher handy in case burning mice try to climb up your leg as they exit the inferno.

Hello, check if the engine ecu is not flooded in water this cars are prone to...... it's situated on the drivers side where the interior filter sits. greetings from a ex MG Rover dealer from Belgium

You need to have the injector knuckle cracked on each injector when fuel starts pumping out your tighten each one until it fires into life , had the same problem on my diesel transit connect van

You don't need to do that on a m47r, only the injector at far left, exactly same as the L series that way.

Being a 52, does it have the underbonnet pump? (some did some didn't) I had a no start on a 51 tourer diesel, was a seal on the high pressure fuel pump. As I no longer have a 75, if you need a high pressure pump removal tool, or a laptop with TOAF to check fuel pressure let me know as i'm only in Burnley, no charge obviously, also got some spares for the 75 diesel engine if you want them too as they're just taking up room under my stairs, turbo and manifold, brand new unused cat, some gaskets too. Don't want them going to waste.

I have a lovely Audi A6 auto estate 2.7 TDI amazing car roomy luxurious car. I paid slightly too much at £1650. the tyres on the car was past there best I sadly bought Avon's x4 @ £380. The Audi had service before its 2nd mot in my ownership cost me £180 I bought new Bosch wiper blades £26. Had oil leak after service garage used non VAG oil sump plug apart from that the car is fab. However I do like the looks of an MG ZZT 2.5 estate if price is right and colour spec.

Or...has the fuel filter come apart in the fuel tank...its under the the rear seat on the nearside of the tank...its a job to get the rear reat out and back in again... Bob....

I noticed when you were turning it over the oil light on the dash never went out , has it got compression , I mean decent compression in all 4 cylinders

That's an interesting point. My assumption is the compression is okay because you can hear wheezing low compression

Paul have you seen it running , I could hear a few times it did try to fire , a bigger battery 096/100 heavy duty around 72AH would help it , and a can of start you bastard sprayed down its throat at the same time as cranking it over , should get it fired up once it’s running it will probably run , Good luck with it , if I lived closer I would give you a hand to try and get it going

Spray brake cleaner down the intake pipe then youl know if the 75 will start 👍

Not recemmend on a m47r. Common rail will start on easy start but you run massive risks of things going boom from uncontrolled preemptive combustion in the chamber. And I mean big booms.

Have you checked the glowplugs? Are they getting 12 volts?

The glow plugs aren't needed unless it's cold
