Many cars have this In-Tank system, not just BMWs and Rover 75 MG ZTs Ten years ago I bought an MG ZT 1.8T which the engine stopped and would not start soon after the previous owner had filled the tank! He was quoted silly high prices to repair so decided to get rid of his non-runner but otherwise nice MG ZT with 1.8T engine. Towed the dead ZT home and started to investigate. Sparks OK, plenty of fuel but it was being delivered very weakly. That should have been a clue but my lack of experience overlooked that. So all the usual suspects checked and no obvious problem found. Used the internet to investigate similar 75/ZT non-start problems and Fuel Filter Separation was one of the prime suspects. What to do with my dead car? Then had a brainwave. Using a plastic syringe, I squirted about 50ml of Petrol into the Inlet Manifold via the Vacuum take off for the Brake Servo, Replaced that vacuum tube and turned the key. IMMEDIATE start and engine ran a few seconds until the fuel squirted into the Inlet manifold was fully used. Repeated the process this time with 100ml of fuel into the Inlet Manifold. Immediate start and engine ran longer until all fuel used. That confirmed 99% fuel delivery issues. What to do? :IDEA: Visited my favourite car breaker yard and there were a couple of V6 75 hidden by hundreds of other cars. It always better to learn new ways on a scrap car than on the car you are working on. Less chance of damaging your car that way whilst learning "how to". Soon had rear seat squab removed and access to the Fuel filter easy once the cover plate was removed. Four 10mm Bolts. The Fuel Line connected to the top of the fuel filter assembly took a while to release but I managed it somehow using needle nosed pliers. Then tapped the large looking ring around to free up the access to the Fuel Filter assembly. ALWAYS withdraw it very carefully as both the Pump and Filter have FRAGILE fuel gauge resistors and floats built in suppling fuel levels data to the ECU for instrument readings. Once removed including the long pipe connected to the Fuel Pump. it immediately revealed the FOC. ( Fabled Orange Clip ) had been fitted in the car's previous ownership. I took the whole assembly up to the Office and was pleased to be charged only £8 UK Pounds for the Filter assembly and the FOC. I also learned how to remove the filter assembly without damaging anything. With that fresh in mind, I removed the Fuel Filter from my ZT which was easier for me the second time. Closer inspection revealed the Cap on top of the Filter assembly had become a few mm loosened. I re-alignend that using the webbing on the lid to body components as a guide. When correctly aligned, the FOC clicked int place which should lock the Filter lid securely and no more separation? Then came a real puzzler. I could not insert the Assembly back into the nearly full fuel tank ( no smoking allowed ... wisely.. I gave that up years ago ) no matter how I tried. The large Rubber Seal around the Filter body just refused to slip in the aperture in the tank it was removed from. Thinks.. there has to be a way and there is. I slid the large seal down away from the Filter Body and fitted that into the aperture in the fuel tank. Then lowering the filter slowly it slid nicely down where it should be. What a relief. That really was a real puzzler to fit until I fitted the large seal into the aperture first. All back together, I turned the key and listened for the fuel system to prime up and stop after a few seconds which these cars usually do. Then the real test. Turned the key and IMMEDIATE start and kept running. Been an immediate starter ever since and still in my ownership. During my web-searches for information, some poor folks were charged in excess of £1000 UK Pounds to fix their cars renewing much of the fuel system. I fixed mine for a massive £8 UK Pounds.Two more ZTs since fixed in same way when you know how. Clips are available on ebay and elsewhere. About ten quid poste in UK. Cars can be like that and Professionals do not know it all.

Thank you for nice usable information 🙏I think I will source the orange clips now before I give it another try! I have been aware of them for quite a while but have forgotten about them ever so slightly 🙈 Pump works fine (renewed in 2017) so I think I will wait with the filter to I’m done reassembling the engine and am sure that works fine! Mean time I will start going over the transmission solenoids ☺️

@@SvennsCarchannel I left another comment but I think it may have been 'filtered' as spam! When I changed mine, I used two of those rubber strap wrenches, one on the top and one on the bottom, to turn it and that worked really well! Mine was seriously stuck too so can I recommend that method.

Removing the locking ring, especially for a petrol car I would suggest a copper hammer or wooden mallet, so definitely no spark.

buy a diesel, no more honda problems, with the bmw you get the filter screwd to the battery and the oil filter next to the oil level rod
