During a late night fever-induced vintage pattern search, I found a cardigan that said it could be knit in one day - so I decided to test it out! Is it possible to knit a vintage sweater in a day?

Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

Someone knitting this sweater in the 1940's might have had to "make-do" with her yarn as well. It only adds to the finished garments charm! Well done!

It’s super cute and I honestly can’t see the difference in yarn. You managed 90% of a cardigan in a day and I’m hitting week 8 on my cardigan and I have 6 days to get it finished 🤞🏻

Fair play, this would take me a week or more of nothing but knitting -- it came out really well! Even knowing there's some make-up yarn in one sleeve I can't spot it in the end product!

The owner of my LYS taught me to do a long-tail cast on with the inside and outside of the ball (or from two different balls), which gives you one extra end to weave in but you never run out of tail!
@ladypinkylee
@ladypinkylee 2 жыл бұрын
That's so smart! Even when I estimate a long tail cast on by wrapping around the needles, I always end up with way too much left over.
@bienemaja9058
@bienemaja9058 2 жыл бұрын
That's a really neat trick! I learned that the long tail for the cast on takes about 3 times the width/circumference of the finished piece (though I suspect that this might not work out exactly for very bulky or very fine yarns). Mostly, I just use this when making something where the fit is not that important and I'm too lazy to knit a swatch 😋; e. g. for a hat in 2x2 rib I just wrap the yarn around my head three times (plus a little bit extra) and then just cast on until I run out of tail yarn 😄

@@bienemaja9058 Oh, that's a kind of magic in itself! Definitely need to try that sometimes!

In my humble opinion, what does a “day” really mean? Besides time being a man made construct (but that’s a conversation for another day 🤣🤣), I’d still consider this a one day knit as you spent a total of less than 24 hours knitting. We’ll consider this a win because the timeline of the pattern assumes you’d have enough of all materials, not be recovering from a horrible illness, while doing other basic human tasks like eating and napping and STILL KILLING IT!! Well done!! 👏🏼

I hope you’re better now, and that you have all your senses back! If you don’t mind my asking, Did your other half escape unscathed from COVID? It looks like you quarantined on the couch- did they go stay with a friend or just stay in another part of the apartment, or did you both get it at the same time? I don’t mean to pry, I just know you mention them on occasion and it seems like you value your privacy, which of course I respect- I just hope you’re both okay and that your whole family is healthy and well! 🥰

Wow this turned out great! How'd you sew in the sleeve caps? They have a really nice shape to the top of them! very vintage. The last time I tried to sew in the arms for a vintage-style sweater all the excess(?) fabric ended up at the actual armpit and I didn't notice until I blocked it and wore it.

Very nice! I’m sorry you ran out of yarn, but making do is what you do. And, you very nearly knit a full sweater in a single day- plus you weren’t feeling great. Had I suspected I would run out, I think I would have made each darker stripe another row longer, or just start every other stripe with the substitute yarn, so the change wouldn’t be noted because it is the pattern.

Hello ! i bought this pattern but I am having trouble understanding how to do the gathering areas on the contrast color rows... are you able to maybe phrase it in a way that a modern knitter might understand? They say to insert needle into 6th and 7th sts as if to knit, k 2 tog, then continue to k2 p2 the rest of the row.... but this would mean a lot of decreasing where do i get the stitches back from the k2tog ? and do I insert my needle into 6th and 7th sts right after knitting the 5th st ? thanks if you can help !!

Dear Engineering Knits, I enjoyed your “ Can I Knit a sweater in One day”. The sweater looks lovely on you. I ordered the Jack Frost Blouse Book from the link you left for us viewers below. However, the pattern ( #3316 ) is lacking some basic info, so I am unable to start knitting it. It doesn’t give bust measurements, it just says size 14??? I do not know what bust measurement size 14 is. It does not mention gauge either. And rows 8 and 16 are a little confusing. Can you please help me out? I noticed another viewer had similar concerns. Thank you for considering my request.
