@oldguysrock21705 жыл бұрын
Getting the bark off the wood gets rid of insects and the bark is great fire starter fuel. Flattening the sides of the logs on the A frame a great idea to fit tighter together. Good use of the chain saw for that. The shelter looks good. Keeping the wind out will greatly increase the warmth especially when the winter winds and snow hit. Snow will be a great insulater and keep much of the wind getting through the cracks. As long as the inside does not get so warm to melt it. Mud grass in the cracks good too. Get some wedges to use when cutting down those trees. Tall pines don’t always fall where you want them to. The wedges work great.
@offgridwarrior5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great comment and tips 906 Sparky. All good stuff, won't be using mud but will use moss and whatever else I can find for sealing between logs. Hoping to work on fireplace/stove this weekend.... It's raining cats and dogs right now. FYI, the opening tree felling scene does not show the wedge cut in on the other side of tree, I don't typically put camera in the intended drop zone the tree was supposed to fall away from camera. This tree had a twist, bowed in two directions... Sometimes you just have to be ready for things to go sideways, which is what happened. I do have logging wedges nearby but when a tree sits down and wants to go in opposite direction I do what I have to do. All the best to you.

I made something similar but I cut all my logs in half, length wise, Alaskan mill style but free handed it. I stood the logs up to avoid binding the chain. I cut notches on one side to stack them up, as well as the ends to fit the 90 degree wall. I made a square that was 7ft tall and used my chain saw to cut out the door way. I used a teepee style roof with a canvas tarp so I could have a fire inside without a heating stove.
@offgridwarrior5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a good setup. I went with something fast and dirty primarily due to time I had to throw something together. Thanks for your comment. Keep well.
@christophermanabat19345 жыл бұрын
Off Grid Warrior yeah, I can relate, took me a month and prob 20 gallons of gas to just finish the walls. I do suggest cutting the logs in half though. Makes 1 log cover more space, so less logs are needed, and makes it easier to carry. I also HIGHLY suggest you buy a chainsaw winch, you can anchor it to trees to drag the logs where you need them. I’m sure flipping the logs and carrying them was 80% of the physical work and took up 50% of your time. The chainsaw winch will make it much faster and easier for you on future projects. Pulleys are a great tool to have too if you need to lift a log over 5ft high. Just combine it with the winch. I eventually got friends to help me finish my hunting lodge roof. Project took 4 months, every weekend, to finish. Keep up the good work and great content!

Respect! I know how hard this kind of work is and the physical requirements to pull it off. One suggestion would be carrying a Eleven 10 Rigid TQ Tourniquet Case Or something similar in a horizontal carry On the back of your belt. It’s a lifesaver doing this kind of work in the unfortunate event of Chainsaw injury or accidental discharge. Just subscribed and looking forward to your upcoming winter season.

Not sure why you don't want to be able to stand up inside for the whole winter. I'm going to build a really small log cabin by myself and live in it soon. (Sandpoint Idaho). Will definitely be following along. Cheers.
@offgridwarrior5 жыл бұрын
I went with the quick and dirty option primarily because this is a temporary structure also the time I have available to build before potential snowfall. As you can see I am hand carrying all logs to the build site... A small cabin would take quadruple the time and effort. I should also mention keeping a small area warm through Winter is also easier, faster and requires less firewood to be hand carried. Good luck on your log cabin build!

Not knowing how far behind the posts are to real life, so this is probably too late, but you should always make the roof support out of a log thicker than the ones stacked against it. The more snow you get there the more important this is.

Thanks for your comment Jerry. A larger ridge pole would not of been an option for me since I could barely move the one I am using currently. I was fortunate enough to drop the tree used for ridge pole 100 ft away from build site. Much of the wall log weight is on the ground logs. The rear wall is also supporting the ridge pole. Good question... I did but honestly I started this project late and have already started to run out of time. Your suggestion would of been a better option, however 8ft logs even with a chainsaw would require an Alaskan mill and this would of taken too much time. The size U have I use 4 walls & 1/2ed 4 Window\Door Frames 4 A Permanent Main Cabin... A thick log does not make 4 more warmth. Layering (Just Like Clothes) Works Best. One layer of 6" logs, then a layer of moss\grass\boughs, then another layer of 6" logs Creates an insulating layer by trapping air & has a better R-value than a single thick log. I build 6" stacking log walls, I leave a 6" space, then build another 6" stacking log wall. I fill the 6" space between with moss\grass\boughs. These insulated walls R WAY Warmer than single log walls & They give more support to the roof poles... I've had 3-4' of wet Ontario packing snow build-up & never had a collapsed roof... Try it. Good stuff.. Curious what mountain range you prefer.. Griz.. Mount goats.. Montana? Canada?
@offgridwarrior5 жыл бұрын
Well Rory I have never stepped in to Canada however I have stared at some pretty frigging awesome Canadian ranges on the horizon... I'm kinda partial to the N Cascades in WA, also Olympics in WA. So many peaks... So little time! All the best to you.

As a Tree Worker I just can’t wait to see your next video when you either drop a tree on yourself, get crushed in your cabin, or when you are having a Hernia operation, ..” work smart, not hard”.

Is there a reason you sourced your logs from a different zip code and then flipped them to your site? See if FEDEX will ship them next time!
@offgridwarrior5 жыл бұрын
There were no suitable trees near build site so I had to go further up the mountain.

Good design. Nice saw work. Might be better to peel the logs, last longer in the elements.

Wow I thought that you were going to loose some valuable body parts when you were stripping the bark off the logs. Looking forward to your next video.

Noooo not the family jewels! It's actually pretty impossible to do that as the handles hit my body before anything else. Thanks for watching Clara. Keep well.
