@@RobbieKnox Not an expert, was just advised to drink in order weak to strong at a beer tasting event and we were only tasting 50 ml or so of each beer. Something to cleanse the palate is probably what's required - bread? mild cheese? It's an interesting thing once you realise it though - if out for a few beers would you enjoy the third beer more if you'd tasted it first?

Hey good on you for making your own beer. A word of warning - what starts as a simple hobby can turn into a bit of an obsession. Before you know it you can find yourself studying the difference between two piece and three piece stainless valves, swapping car engines for kegs off a keg delivery driver, and learning how to tune proportional-integral-derivative controllers for your shiny new electric-heat-exchanged-recirculating-mash brewery. Or so I've heard 😂 top tip: you only need to sanitise everything that comes in contact with post-boil wort. So no need to sanitise the scissors until you're using them to cut the yeast packet.

I do a fair bit of brewing, one thing I would recommend is buying some Starsan sanitiser. It seems expensive but a bottle will last you years. You can put it in a spray bottle just mist it over everything and within seconds you're good to go with no rinsing. If you get some litmus paper to check the PH is within the tolerance you can even reuse it a few times. It takes the pain out of the boring part of brewing.
@RobbieKnox
@RobbieKnox 4 жыл бұрын
Amazing, thanks. I had heard this but found it hard to get Starsan the UK currently, so got Chemsan which seemed similar. Not sure if you know anything about that? It seemed fairly expensive too!

I don't know much about Chemsan, but looks very similar. I'm in the UK too, seems like starsan has pulled out of Europe. Glad to see you threw the whole grapefruit in there. That was my main question the Brooklyn Brew Shop instructions don't tell you. To me their instructions "squeeze Grapefruit and add it to the boil" have thee possibilities: 1) you squeeze the juice from the grapefruit and add the juice to the boil 2) you squeeze the juice from the grapefruit and add the squeezed juiceless grapefruit to the boil. 3) you squeeze the juice from the grapefruit and add both the juice and remaining grapefruit, peel, pith and flesh to the boil. I felt #3 was correct, glad you did too. Peel likely does more for the flavor than juice. I can't really see throwing away the peel. I could imagine throwing away the juice, but only slightly. As for the volcano... too much priming sugar? It seems to me when I run the priming sugar calculations that the 3 Tbs that BBS recommends for all their recipes is a tad much. I used 2 Tbs for another of their brews and still had plenty of carbonation. Or do you think that maybe only two weeks of ferment wasn't enough to finish the ferment?

Commercial brewer here. Smashing job for your first attempt. Great name too! You pretty much got everything spot on. The excess foaming after you popping the crown off is either an effect of bottle conditioning or if the bottles were not sanitised before filling with beer you probably have an infection which you wouldn’t detect (by nose or taste) until later on in the bottled beer’s life. Pretty sure BD actually use a Grapefruit flavouring in their mass produced version.

It's a mystery to be honest. The Bin Day IPA is full of mystery.

It is an hydrometer not a thermometer, used for measuring specific gravity, aka how much sugar is present to be turned into alcohol.

The thing I was putting in the beer? It’s definitely a thermometer. I’ve bought a hydrometer too, but the thing I had definitely measured temperature.

@@RobbieKnox The thing you took out the box at the beginning was a hydrometer but you called it a thermometer.

Why did you use the tube and bowl of water instead of the air trap you left on the side in the background?
@RobbieKnox
@RobbieKnox 4 жыл бұрын
Apparently in the early days the fermentation can be very bubbly, so you can end up with beer getting into the airlock if you put it straight on. But I'm no expert so someone else might correct me on this.

Robbie Knox good shout, I didn’t know the beer gets pretty lively for a couple of days. I bet this heat didn’t help it. I got my Step Father the Punk IPA kit can’t wait until it’s ready. It only made 5 bottles the 6th exploded overnight while bottle conditioning.

I wonder why the instructions asked you to use the tube and not just the airlock from the beginning of the fermentation. That way you wouldn't need to have an open bowl of sanitizer laying about.

I think the reason the Grapefruit taste never came through is because I think Brew Dog use red grapefruits, which I think are a bit juicier and stronger, which also is why the colour is different.
