I've been thinking about this well. As for tortoiseshells, a lot of tories in the series (Like Spottedleaf, Redtail, and Sorreltail) don't have tortie parents, so you could just say the gene is recessive and have orange self be something else entirely.

Maybe tortoiseshell could be ranging from "one red hair" to "almost ginger except that ear tuft"? An interesting concept is the brindle in dogs, where it is possible for a dog to not pass down brindle at all. Also make it independent from white spotting, so you can easily have big red blotches with no white!

Omg, I'd never thought of anyone doing this. This looks fun. But also, absolutely absolutely headache inducing. Image using this gene base to fix WC genetics. RIP Bramble's design (he would have to be a tortie unles some REALLY convoluted stuff was happening with golden flower.

In terms of really stretching real genetics, there's actually a bunch of different pigmentation disorders in animals in general (including/especially noted in big cats) that could be applied. Albinism and its less-extreme cousin leucism don't do much since cats can already be white. Amelanism has the same problem, since we have black cats too. Piebaldism could explain the white splotches, it results from a mutation that "turns off" melanin production in patches of cells. Isabellinism, a form of leucism, could explain the "pale" coat colors. Erythrism is an unusual red pigmentation, and could explain both "dark ginger" and light strawberry pink colors. (Note: Erthyrism in mammals is probably pheomelainin, which is what regular ginger cats already have, but shh.) However, that isn't the end. While all mammals only produce melanin for pigmentation, if you allowed for the cats to produce other pigments you could get some crazy stuff. The two other common pigments that you find in non-mammal chromatophores are pteridines, which produce yellow colors, and carotenoids, which produce red/orange ones. These could explain the yellow coloration and further expand the ginger variety. These also mean that amelanism doesn't automatically mean albinism, so you can get patterns like "white with yellow stripes" and so forth.

I love you adding red and yellow to the orange gene because that's something I've thought about doing in my own fantasy genetics! And dilution being a scale makes a lot of sense for warriors because there's so many different shades of colors described that don't really fit into actual genetics! Anyway fantasy genetics are super cool and make cats interesting :3

amazing video, but one thing for the torties, males CAN be torties, they just have an XXY thing, and as long as they have a male chromosome in the you know where area, then they are a male and there for a male tortie, but your idea makes sense as the XXY males are really rare.

Very cool. But im pretty sure male cats can be tortoiseshells bc either they get an extra chromozone or they merged with a sibling. That's the explanation i heard for male tortoiseshells, but they do exist

Honestly this is exactly what I thought was going on in fantasy cat land, just different genetics. These cats are dying of old age with creaky bones at 10 years old and running around the day after being born, there's something wacky going on in their genetics and it's not just ThunderClan's inbreeding issue.

the funniest thing is Red and yellow are possible. Ginger is called 'Red' genetically, while 'yellow' is part of the Ginger spectrum on the brighter end. But I like what you did more then real genetics. besides- it's basically fantasy cats. Let em be whatever color ya want honestly. Is it alright to use this version genetics btw?

So, way back in Power of Three. I mostly used human-like genetics, so if it appeared anywhere in the tree, it was then passed down to explain random fur colors that appeared such as Hollyleaf having black fur as something she gained from further up from Firestar/Tigerstar’s family trees. And boy, was little me happy that Leopardfoot was a black she-cat because surely, that meant Hollyleaf got her fur color from her great grandma and was a call-back to Nightkit, her great aunt. This was all prior to the reveal and I do know more about cat genetics now but it’s easier to just apply more human genetics. (Which is likely what’s occurring anyway as we wouldn’t have near as many “Son looks like dad,” copies without it.)

Eye genetics is weird, but with blue eyes it’s quite easier. Crowfeather, Bluestar, Goosefeather, Silverstream, Feathertail, etc. cats without white spotting is impossible. They would at least need some white (or maybe high) spotting on them (Stormtail and Rooktail are also impossible because of this). But maybe just say that the blue eye color thing is possible for every cat regardless of white. Or give them blueish eyes

The various DBE [dominant blue eye] genes, or DBE gene cluster, proves this wrong actually. It does occasionally add very low-grade and barely noticeable white spotting, but also you can just get cats with blue eyes and no white.

I just woke up and I'm drinking coffee... way too quickly! Just wanted to say a random thought that just hit me in the face and is totally off track from the video: Has anyone ever read a cat give another cat a nickname version of their name OTHER than Lionblaze to Jayfeather? Lionblaze called Jayfeather 'Jay' once (maybe even twice) and it threw me for a loop. It's been so long since I've physically read the books (read as a kid and switched to audio as an adult because I like to listen while I clean... adulting is great) so I can't remember if this was during their apprenticeships, around the time AFTER they were given their full names, or if it was a while later. Pretty sure it was early-ish on but they weren't kits and maybe not apprentices by that point. Has there ever been another time where this happened in the whole series?? I know this is random but here we are. XD
