Current world record of the fastest 100 km cycled by James MacDonald is 2 hours and 19 minutes (indoor velodrome, upright bike). Can a regular guy like me ride 100 km in that same time by a velomobile?

It took me 2 hrs 35 minutes to do a 55km lap of my area (Copper triangle: Wallaroo- Moonta bay- Pt. Hughes- Moonta- Kadina-Wallaroo.) But that's on my trike- a Greenspeed Magnum BW. And at 110 kg I'm not close to being fit! Between Wallaroo and Moonta, and Kadina and Wallaroo there are dedicated bike paths, but not nice smooth hot mix unfortunately.

The road surface conditions you faced were quite bad in places. That probably had a serious impact, plus you had traffic issues. That cant compare to a Velodrome with a near perfect surface.

Have you considered thorn resistant inner tubes? They are much heavier, but you never get a flat. In my commutes, it's been a huge improvement.

Still a good job. Not to diminish from your effort, a two wheel streamliner holds the one hour record at just over 92 km. The current record for a streamlined recumbent bicycle enclosed in an aerodynamic shell under the International Human Powered Vehicle Association (IHPVA) rules is held by Francesco Russo at 92.43 km (57.43 mi). This was done outdoors on a large automotive test track in Germany.

I wonder if you had shoulder straps holding you down in your seat that would mimic gravity for upright bikes how many more watts you'd be able to gain. I mean, probably good for a 25 watt better average. I know you have to be rising up a little. Also, create a segment along this ride that is 100KM long and see all the data.

Hi. Great effort. Have you considered wider tyres? As fully faired the aero penalty would be negligeable, The larger air mass should make for a better ride over the rough surface which should repay in keeping your body in better shape longer and wider tyres can reduce rolling resistance. Also I see you are using butyl inner tubes. TPU inner tubes are lighter and have lower rolling resistance. Put together, a few more effective wats for going a bit faster. All those intersections didn't help and I'm sure i saw at least one 40kph limit. With a few improvements, and a better (less junctions) route and better fueling (to maintain your power output) I'm sure you can do it. Lovely video and I hope you give it another go and I look forward to it. Go for it, "allez, allez, allez" as they say on "Le Tour".

I really liked watching you ride in the rain. You are so much more comfortable and drier than me on a day like that which normally I would just skip. If I had a velomobile I would not mind riding in those conditions. Also I think your speed was good given the non optimal road conditions.

This is still pretty awesome, taking the circumstances into consideration. It did get me thinking about something tangential. A while back you did a test with a 25 km/h eAssist for the velomobile (regular pedelec EU regulation), and watching that my main complaint was that those are only useful for acceleration in a velomobile. You'd want a speed-pedelec (45 km/h limit EU regulation), and since you can keep ~40 km/h at 200 watt, you'd be speed limited rather than power limited with a speed-pedelec. Here you averaged 38.6 km/h with 147 watt. 45 km/h would require less than 250 watt, and if you put in 100 watt yourself, the motor only needs to put in 150 watt. That's ~350 Wh/100 km - less than most normal ebike batteries. Put a 750 Wh battery in it, and you'd have one hell of a commuter vehicle.

I remember you testing the difference in speed between the quatrevelo and your quest and you kept the quatrevelo at almost 45kmh speed ... I'm surprised you didnt exceed that speed with the bülk... and... couldn't have just gone from Korpi to Kannus and back to korpi and then for the rest towards toholampi again since the roads seem to have been in better shape? btw I just got my quatrevelo plus and I managed a 30kmh average on a 90km trip ... I was pretty much spent after that ordeal... you must be pretty fit to do a 45 average in a quatrevelo. you should that comparison test with the Bülk too....

155/140 = 1,107 => it took you 10,7% more that the WR, that´s very close, considering the circumstances. On one side, you had to fight wind, weather and potholes, while the velodrome- or imaginary-hyperloop-scenarios simply aren´t reflecting reality... And while your velomobile is far more aerodynamic than a hyper-race-bike, using a velomobile is exactly as feasible as using one of those hyper-race-track-bikes... And so, the one who chooses the track-bike, it´s his own fault, after all...

Hey Saukki You got any suggestions for countering the rain, except for racing hoods and not riding? (I'm not necessarily against a racing hood. I just don't have one yet, because when I bought my Quest, I found the price for the hood quite high for something I thought I wouldn't use. So right nog it's not an option.) Both yesterday and today I got caught in a real downpour, that quickly made my glasses inpossible to see through, and eventually even soaked my raincoat as well, to the point even my clothes underneath got pretty wet, despite the foam cover. The cover isn't the problem, that doesn't let any water through. But with heavy rain like I got the last two days, it still comes in through the remaining opening. Yet, f*ck not riding. I can agree with what you said in some previous videos. The velomobile is still way more fun than the car. I'm willing to endure wet clothes, just to be able to have already downed a cup of coffee at work by the time someone I passed only about 5 km before arriving, and to be able to just keep moving. I might not be home quicker than if I went by car in the evening. But just the fact I can ride up to the front of the queue at traffic lights, or even bypass traffic hotspots completely... Just for that, it's a joy to have a velomobile. What I'm really concerned about is the wet, unclear glasses though. It's not safe practice to ride like that. Yet not everywhere is enough space to stop without holding up others to clean them. But I'm visually impaired, so I really need mine for riding. Otherwise I would just put them away when it rains. As for the racing hood, it's not that I'm not willing to consider it. I just found it quite expensive for something that, when I bought the velomobile, I thought I would never, or at least only very rarely, use. So I don't have one... yet. But after the last two days, It starts to seem more interesting to get one after all. So I'm now trying to get some info if they really makes a difference in the rain. But also what you have to keep in mind when using one.

My solo PB is 35,4km/h over 100km on the roadbike. Bonked so hard at the 104km mark that I had to return to the previous town to get something to eat. If you can talk while riding, you're not riding hard enough 😆

You did bloody well all things considered, hard off to you. I've been told that if you spray silicone lube inside your tyre and over the inner tube, it reduces the chance of pitch flats by allowing the tube slip away from the tyre as it flatters. I can't back this up with any science, or what disadvantages it might cause, but maybe worth a try. Can you tell me when removing the front wheels, are the bolts handed or do they both undo anti clockwise. Great video, ride safe.

Interesting idea. That lube trick might actually reduce the rolling resistance tiny bit by reducing the friction between tyre and tube. Both front wheel bolts undo anti-clockwise.

I did 65 km in 1,5 hour. Avarage speed 45 km per hour. When you take accu and mirrors away. It need to be piece of cake. Just build it up. It takes 2 weeks to get into shape.

Velomobiles are pretty good for year-round riding. Here where I live our winters are similar to Finland. I ride my velomobile the whole year. I just slow down and Eb more careful when there is snow. Saukki uses a Quatrevelo so he can have better traction in snow. I ride my Bülk all year though and just put winter tires on and be more careful in snow.

Hey, Saukki. Good try at the record. Given the conditions, I don't think 2h35min is that bad. You're definately doing a lot better than me. So far I haven't bothered resetting the bike computer in my Quest yet, Except when it gave an error message for average speed. So I know over the course of the last two weeks, my average hovered somewhere between 18-20km/h. And when I was checking, I saw it took me about 7,5 hours to ride about 530 km. But I'm getting used to the Quest now. I'm starting to be more consistent with my speed, maintaining 25-30 km/h much better, and sometimes getting up to 35 (if I still dare to check) And I'm getting more confident about turns. And figuring out how asphalt condition/composition, weather, ... all affects the speed The fastest I've gone so far was 44km/h, when I was on my home street, and was trying for speed. After resetting the computer, I've had a 40km/h max speed, of which I don't even know where I've gone that fast. So I probably wasn't trying that time. Just lucky. Downhill stays scary though... I don't want to overheat the brakes, but I also don't want to shoot out into an intersection without being able to check if it's clear. Any tips to counter sore feet soles? Or an idea what may cause it? I usually have it when riding home after work, so I already thought it could be the edges where the bottoms of my socks are stitched shut getiing under there from running around all day, and than causing me trouble when I ride home. I don't adjust them when I change into my cycling shoes, because I have to rush out. The bosses can never be gone quick enough. I've already been locked in once because of their "go go go" attitude and them not bothering to check if everyone left before the last person who has the code for the gate, leaves. While certainly the ones in the office all come by car. And what was that you were sayng about farting in a velomobile, quite a while back?... Phew! I think I need my exhaust checked. 🌬😱 Well, at least the noise reminds all those jealous people to keep distance 🤣

Is the Quest your first recumbent? If so, that may explain the sore feet you have. You are not yet accustomed to the riding position. Or maybe Quest has different riding position than your previous recumbent (if you had one). But anyway, the sore feets probably comes because of restricted blood circulation. You are pedaling legs high in front of you and your blood circulation may not yet be adjusted to that riding position. I had the same issue back in the days when I started with recumbents. You just have to keep riding and it will get better over time. Or then your shoes are little bit too tight which will effect the blood circulation.

@TheVelomobileChannel so far I've done everything with it though. Commuting to work, shopping, ... Even foe just a ride. Only time I took the car was when the weather people predicted a bad storm... which than I didn't see anything from. And the time I was going away for a day, and had to leave my personal transport unattended at the train station. I didn't want a dolphin interaction to be overshadowed by concern over the safety of my brand new ride. So for that day I felt more comfortable taking the car. But other tan that, I always take the Quest... cycling shoes are quicker to put on, I can travel 2/3 of my route to work without seeing any cars. And at the times I'm commuting, there aren't many cyclists either. And I don't have to stop for fuel. Yes, without a racing hood, it's not the most pleasant option when it rains. But it still beats having to deal with BMW and Audi drivers. I wonder what you get if you cross breed those 🤔😜
