Seems like a lot of damage for just 30,000 miles. I understand the Florida heat baking the plastic parts. But good thing you were there to rescue it and make it whole!
@johnmuir83052 жыл бұрын
Most of the damage seems age and environment related. Failure of rubber is up to use as well as time and this car was likely exposed to salt, either by being by the beach or by driving on salted roads. Seems like the suspension joints failed because the boots failed and let contaminants in, that could definitely happen over 20 years even with only 30k miles. Then you have headliner glue failure from years of temperature swings and plastics failures from UV radiation like the headlight washers. EDC shocks could have been taken out by our roads or the shaft seals failed because of age or environmental reasons and leaked all the fluid out.

I had a 2000 735i (V8) in the UK from 2006 - 2018 (my fifth 7 series) and sadly part exchanged it for my "retirement car" a 520d Luxury. Mine had 130,000 miles by the time I sold it and it was in far better condition than this one. True the bushes and similar were tiring, but it passed its rigorous annual UK MoT tests without work and had none of the dire deterioration seen on this example. Repairs during my ownership included an ABS sensor (damaged by jet cleaning), an alternator, a rusty fuel tank, and some bumper damage when I was rear ended by a moped and more minor items - not bad for 12 years. The only thing wrong with it when px'ed was a needed another CD drive for the sat' nav' (a ~$10k option when new!), as the first replacement ($70 on ebay) failed after three years. Certainly the finest car I have ever owned, and one of the best I have ever driven, whoever gets this lovingly restored example is in for a treat, but $25,000! I only paid ~$8000 for mine in 2006 when it was just six years old.

@japanwatchconnection BMW’s plan after E38 (just like Mercedes of that era) was to start to cater to the masses by cheapening their design cycles and relying on tech gimmicks instead of driving experience refinement. And as you’ve noted, it worked. Both companies became incredibly profitable by making huge lineups of soulless, derivative status symbols.
@VideoAmericanStyle2 жыл бұрын
@japanwatchconnection …those are the facts. Mercedes recently announced it would pivot away from that mass market strategy, in fact. It paid off for them, but the cost was creating inferior products for the past two decades.

Exterior paint is very good, with a couple of bird poo blemishes that you can see in the right light. I replaced the plugs and fuel injectors when I had the valve covers off, big difference in performance. Cheers, Aussie Rob.
