For anyone who might be wondering about the tank vent/valve - I cut one apart a month or two ago. Inside is a spring and a ball. The ball is directly behind the hole and the spring presses the ball against the hole. Using air and/or solvent to try and clean the area where the ball seats might fix the leak if a piece of dirt got between the ball and the seat.

I do the same thing you do concerning ordering parts. I tend to order two of something so I have another, especially on items I know I will run across. Nothing makes a customer happier than saying" I already have that part in stock." Not that I keep a big inventory because I do not. I run across these saws on occasion and love how reliable they are. I have run across the leaking vent issue before and generally most guys refuse to get it fixed or just live with the slight leak. An awesome video this time. I really enjoy your videos.

I had the same problem with the same saw, I tried aftermarket cap as it was 5 times cheaper than OEM and it broke once I tried to screw it. So I replaced the o-ring from the old cap with the o-ring from the new cap and it's working for few years already. No need to change the cap as the OEM is the best. Just need to change the o-ring.

Thanks for your professional education.... I used to bring my 260 anually to the dealer for maintenance and repair of the oil problems. I paid €65,- each time and still had oil issues. Today I took it apart myself: The complete inner side area around the clutch has never been cleaned. Old saw dust mixed with oil residue turned into a layer of dough, hard as concrete, covering the entire inside. Not able to clean it with compressed air nor brake cleaner. I'm soaking it with NATO gun oil and now it's weakening and I can peel it off carefully with a small screwdriver.... Took me almost 8 hours, repaired it as shown in the video and now I have a good running chainsaw thanks to you.

You stated that you are using winter chain oil for your leak test, which I assume is thinner than summer oil. What is the ambient temperature in your shop? Maybe that is the reason it's seeping thru. I know when I'm out of chain oil, I will use 30 WT. motor oil as a temporary substitute and it will leak like crazy. Good info Donyboy.

I have an 026 with the new style "flip up" cap that used to leak like a sieve. I cleaned the “flip up” cap liberally with brake cleaner and wiped if off with a clean rag - it has been about 3 years since it last leaked a single drop. I would recommend cleaning the "flip up" cap before replacing it. My Dewalt battery powered saw used to spill almost all its oil overnight - I tried everything including buying a new oil cap - since that saw never gets transported off the property I just store it on its side with the cap pointing up in the air - problem solved - no more overnight leaks - even when I am using it I just lay it down on its side since a single drop of biodegradable bar oil is to expensive to spill. It does not leak when in use - strange!

What a great video! I have the same Stihl chainsaw and this made me an expert in fixing it. A little story about how I got it: I have a relative who said that there is a chainsaw that they would like to sell. They have about 10 Stihls, but they never sell any. They are quite an alcoholic brigade, but nice guys. I was quite sure that they really mean that it is good, but I knew nothing about chainsaws and this one was looking really old. One guy used it that day, and he was absolutely drunk in the evening. He could barley say a word. I asked him if the chainsaw was good, and he just smiled and said: "it is a good chainsaw". At that moment I knew that he was being honest. :)

Nice video. Good point on the vent. The gaskets for the caps are cheap from Stihl, and 90 percent of the time, it's all that is needed. The clutch drum on the adjustable oiler version will have a slot for driving a different gear on the pump. Keep up the great work!!!!

I replaced the oil pickup line without dumping the bar oil in my 026 the other day. Turning the saw on its flywheel side will keep all the oil in the saw. I removed the clutch, sprocket, worm gear and oil pump. I then pulled out the old oil pickup line with a pair of needle nose pliers. Blew the filter out and put it on the new oil line. I pushed it into the hole and then took my 10 mm long nut driver and pushed it down completely into the hole. I put everything together, ranked it up and it oiled, perfectly. I have had no leaks since. I did not replace the discharge line.

I do have the exact same 026 saw that I bought new thirty years ago and it still runs great. Mine leaks a little oil but I always drain the gas and the bar oil out after I'm finished using it for the day so it leaves very little oil residue. I always hand tighten my gas and oil caps and never use the screw driver just for that reason to not break them. Great video and Thanks for making it. I removed the flat gasket and used an Oring. Last I looked it wasn't leaking. I did cut out an oversized flat gasket from an old bicycle tire tube.
