Is this an issue when the saw is stored and sitting in the upright position? If so I have a Remington Outlaw RM4620 saw that does the same thing. I bought it brand new and used it the first time, stored it away and went back the next day and all my bar oil had leaked out.

Steve, first off, thank you for this video. I wanted to tell you that the orange plastic plug can also be found on some of the mid-size Stihl chainsaws, or at least it was there on the old ones. I have a 1993 Stihl 029, 54.1 cc, called the "Farm Boss" back then -- today's Farm Boss (the 271) is a bit smaller, 50.2 cc, but has similar performance, apparently. The current 291 is closer in engine size (55.5 cc). Anyway, my old 029 has had a slow oil-leak for years. After seeing this video, I checked, and sure enough, it has the orange plastic plug, and it was almost out of its hole. I tried pressing it back in, but after only a couple hours run-time it was backing out again. I ordered the little set-screw from my local Stihl repair shop (...and you were right, they didn't even know about this problem). I installed the set screw, with one thread visible, and the oil leak stopped...BUT the set-screw wasn't very tightly held, and after a few days working on winter blow-downs, it had worked it's way out almost another full thread. I removed it, cleaned the hole and the screw with some non-chlorinated brake cleaner, replaced the screw with just a tiny drop of blue LocTite, and it has stayed fixed for the last month of work. Problem solved. Thank you. One last question: I used engine degreaser for years to get rid of all the oil-soaked sawdust (...yeah, I'm a bit OCD about getting it really clean), but I didn't like using water to rinse, so I switched to brake-cleaner (non-chlorinated to protect the plastic). Last year I grabbed a can of (what I thought was) non-chlorinated brake cleaner, but it was the chlorinated variety. I thought maybe I'd ruined the saw. But to my surprise, it didn't seem to do any damage to the cover-assembly or any of the other plastic parts. So was I just lucky? I really liked that it cleaned better, and evaporated instantaneously, unlike the non-chlorinated stuff. I'd like to keep using it, but I worry that long-term use could damage the saw. What say you, Steve?

Once again ...great tech info and entertainment all in one superb edition. I knew you would have the answer to all the oil pooled in the tailgate of my 6x4 Big Country. Now I will have to check to see if my Echo 310 has the same issue allowing all its oil to pool in the same tailgate. I have learned this as well. If half a can of C2 H5 02 (ethyl alcohohol) is enough for you it will take a full can or a can and a half for me to get it done as time is the issue as I have. Great stuff Steve!

A great thank you, Steve. Most dealers know nothing about this 000 953 1001 solution. I had this problem (dry chain plus oily chainsaw and floor), which ruined my chain, my bar and I don't know if the piston /segments also... The solution proposed by the dealer was to make a short iron cillinder to obturate the hole. What I did instead was taking a M6 allen screw, shortening it and tapering the threads at the end. It solved the problem. Unfortunately I didn't watch your vid by this time. Your information is so needed! (even for dealers). Many people is complaining of this problem. I thought this issue affected just to my model (MS 230), but I see this is not the case.

My old 036 has leaked bar oil since it was new back in 1994. I just assumed that it was normal. It’s been a great saw. Cut a lot of firewood with it over the years and it’s never even had a carb kit put in it. It Stihl runs like a beast but it sure makes a mess inside the plastic case I keep it in.

This was a revelation! I've had a little MS180 mini-boss for years and it's the worst chainsaw I've ever owned. It's been leaking oil since almost as long as I've had it but I didn't bother doing anything about it since it mostly sits in the garage. Thing always needs worked on, won't cut even with a new chain, no power.......pain in the butt. I'll stick with my Huskies.....they are the best saws I own. Thanks for the video.....you have motivated me to put a little more tlc into the Stihl and give it some more use and see what happens.

Thanks for the tip Steve - recently purchased my first Stilh chainsaw (MS-291) - I cut about 4 cords of wood a year - I bought it from a local Stihl dealer - I used it for less than an hour and half a tank of fuel (the fuel the dealer filled it with) - After using it to cut down an ash tree and cut a few limbs and two 8 foot logs it would not restart to cut a third 8 footer - It required a new carb to fix which the dealer performed under warranty - I would love to hear what your thoughts - Cheers

This makes me want to find a leaky saw and buy it just to fix it. I don't even really need a chainsaw. This is what your videos do to me. Love it!!

I got an 064 av stihl that leaks oil. Thought I'd store it on its side. Still leaks. The M3 threaded plug looks like it comes with some type of blue sealer goop on the threads. If its loctite, would be a good idea to dip a couple q-tips in alcohol and clean the female threads so it seals properly. I ran into that issue with loctite in the past where it wont work if threads are oily. Enjoyed the video! I love a beer called grainbelt nordeast! Nector of the gods! 🍺🍺😆

I’m thinking this may be my Stihl issue. I have a 194T that has been used lightly since new. I noticed that it was slinging a thin trail of oil onto my log, and the butt end of my Stihl under the carb is glistening. Let me check… Thank you for your continued, learned assistance. 👍🏼

Once again Steve to the rescue.... Watched my buddy pull out his ms170 from its case 2 days ago and the case was swimming in oil and the saw was horrendously soaked in oil... he just wiped it off and put some oil in it and went about his business... When i asked him what the hell is wrong he just said its been leaking for 15 years and still works so meh... i couldn't believe it... My chainsaws are SPOTLESS. I use them hard when i use them but they are gleaming before they go back to their storage cases. So i just happened upon this video and voila! I shall be fixing his MS170 tomorow! If I'm ever out in BC im taking Steve out for steak and beers...
