My life went from busy to unmanageable the day my first daughter was born, and it hasn't slowed down since. That was 14 years ago. I think it's in my DNA to keep moving. Yes, I have plans to plant out a TON of rhododendrons starting now. I've been working on clearing a large area for planting and am getting closer to moving all these plants out.

Como se va, chico?! 11:15 AM and a balmy 84F outside. Cousins away up near the North Pole (Pennsylvania) were complaining they were expecting frost. Filled with love and joy, I explained I have tomatoes in the bushes, the chilis are in bloom as is the eggplant, and it's been so cold, even the scarlet runner beans are in bloom and alive! Ditto the nasturtium alive, in bloom, and tasty. Strawberries and done for now and the leaves huge. Been picking a lot of Pakistan mulberries, too. Got a few Brown turkey figs tooting now. hasta!

@@MikeKincaid79 Breba figs are slowly ripening but with a ton of new figs coming on. Way to get more figs, keep the plant pruned all summer. Any stray leaf or stem that shows, it's in the compost. Figs get one year to grow wild, then all suckers go to the rooting tubs. I need more chili plants! Seeds can go in now 'cause the blooms will fall off till the monsoons, anyway, BTW, the 2 loquat that the crazy lady cut off are sprouting leaves, haha. the back gates stays locked at night, so she's cutting the buds off a rose planted last spring. Not a problem. This way it pushes more roots, not flowers. niio, kid.

Hello, hello! Good to see you Mike!!! Great video! We have 78°F ridiculous and will be in the mid 80s in the 10 days forecast 😢 I didn't get a chance to plant my garden yet, so many plans and nothing. Since I can't do a lot I have to wait on people. My husband is busy and if he overexerts himself he is not feeling well....my mom doesn't know how to do it and my son does not like to or want to..... Ugh. I need to get well like 30 years ago. Sorry to hear your spring is starting off rough. To tell you the truth, I'm pretty far behind too on my veg garden. Haven't started a single seed. The house is soaking up my time. Keep your head up and don't try to bite off more than you can chew.

I have not started any seeds either and last year when we moved, we didn't have a garden. I will have to make sure I have a portable chicken coop or something for when I get my chicks in the beginning of October. Hopefully it's not going to be too cold. I will have to think about it, and fairly fast. I have so many ideas and so many things that want to do.... God help me! Truth is, Mike that building a house is not as easy, once in a lifetime and it will take your entire time and energy. Enjoy it! With the rest, you do what you can! Hugs 🤗🤗🤗

I picked up a basket with the same r,w&b petunias too, so beautiful and my coleus, 2 of three the same as yours lol I couldn't find the lime like you have. Potato vine looks so good with coleus (with almost anything really). I've got 3 cuttings started because the wind snapped some arms off the petunias. I also found black petunias and a super dark red petunia. I chose all these with propagation in mind. This time, no access for the cat 🤭

Love your cuttings tips. I’m wondering if you have any tips for how to handle cuttings after they’ve rooted. I have some salvia, lilac and smoke bush cuttings that rooted beautifully in perlite. I potted them up in good potting soil but now they look really sad. What steps do you take to keep them happy and healthy after you transition them from the rooting hormone to soil? Thanks! Once they've rooted, get them in a good nutritious soil so they have the nutrients they need to grow.

"When" answered relative to last expected frost would have wide application. The burning bush might be said to be ready to give cuttings 10 weeks after last expected frost. Which would be early June in zone 8b for instance.

Michael, Everyone on KZbin says how EASY-PEASY growing figs from cuttings are.... BUT..... Success for me has been very difficult over the last several seasons. I have tried rooting the cuttings first in potting soil. (all died). Next I tried a mix of sand & mulch (only 1 of 9 cuttings took and still lives). And this past winter I bought that expensive PROMIX HP with Mycorrhizae and did those "fig pops" placed in a new plastic tub with a lid covering 75% of the opening and kept in a bedroom with no direct sunlight at all. At first , many of them had roots growing in the bags, not a lot of roots but some. But then when I went to pot them, Only 6 of 21 cuttings actually continued to grow where I have successfully up potted them into 15 gallon pots. The rest all died. Very frustrating indeed. Now the question.... IF I took today (May 21, 2023) a 7" fig cutting from one of those new green stems from the plants, and stick it into a vase of water, will THAT grow me a new plant with water being the medium to grow the roots? Geez, I have tried everything else to root fig cuttings except water.

I can feel your frustration. All those methods will work well. I think you need to stop floundering around from method to method, stick with one of them, and perfect it until you are super successful with it. It's hard for me to "make" someone successful on my end because there are so many variables I can't control. All I can do is tell you that I've tried many different methods and probably all of them that you've tried. I've had a lot of fun experimenting with it and to date, there is one method that stood out for me and performed heads and shoulders above the rest. And as my good friend Lou Monticolo says, "That's just my 2 cents, for what it's worth."

I propagate geraniums all the time with the flowers on it, big pieces, small pieces, with flowers and without and they do amazing and no rooting hormone needed.

Take the big leaf cuttings in August. I root them all fall and winter on bottom heat. They take much longer to root and get established than many other plants.

The biggest obstacle to success in gardening (which _also_ carries over to other facets of life) is embracing the “precious” attitude towards your material. Some people plant two cuttings and when they die they consider themselves failures, rather than taking 100 cuttings and rejoicing when half of them live. Think big, plan big, act big... that way the occasional failures can be written off. I’ve never in my life entered into a successful situation knowing wtf I was doing, I just knew what I wanted. Every garden I ever had thrived (mostly) in spite of me not knowing everything in advance, but experimenting along the way.

We'll be waiting for next year to see the red, white, and blue theme. Last weekend I was at someone's house and they accidently broke a new shoot off of their empress tree. I threw it in the back of my truck and by the time I got home an hour later it was totally wilted. I threw it into a bucket of water. It stayed wilted and dropped leaves for 4 or 5 days then started to become turgid again. Now what? Do I leave it in the water to root? Should I pot it into a tree pot (you know the tall square one)and keep sitting in a tray of water since it is liking the moisture? I covet that tree and have no success with the seeds. I accidently broke an old wood stem of a red honeysuckle and stuck that hardwood cutting in the bucket and it is doing well too!??! I think it's a magic bucket. Have fun with the plumber today!

Haha, it's like you're reading my mind. I'm sitting here waiting for him to show up right now, lol. I love Empress trees but have never tried to root them. From what I'm reading, it's similar to lilac. You can do root cuttings in winter or semi-firm cuttings in August, like rhododendrons.

I wanted to see if you could help...im from north Georgia....I made a prop box and used small clear cups and soaked some peat....then squeezed all moisture out with hand and fill cups with damp peat....use rooting hormone, cut soft woods right below node, pokes hole with chop stick and put in, I misted good and closed lid....kept out of direct light but kinda bright light area on porch....all those rotted out after 5 to 6 weeks 4:53 , so assumed to much humidity ....at same time I took 3 gal containers and filled with pavers sand, did the same with cuttings and covers with clear pastics gal container....those stayed healthy for 8 weeks and went to take out and even though, they didn't dry out or rot, when took up none produced any roots....wondering if you had any ideas of what I might have done wrong

In the prop box it was a even mix of jap Maples, jap camielas, skip laurel, 2 different types hydrangeas, and yellow anise....3 of each( was large volume container, each in separate 5 oz cup, with drain holes and peat was just damp....no holes or anything in prop box and proballt opened and misted 4 or 5 times over 2 months) ...they all seemed to die of rot, besides one hydrangea,, which looked super healthy but didn't produce any roots, I put it in peat/soil mix and have in shade and water once a day and still alive , for last 2 weeks, but not sure if any roots growing or not....theaters in the sand with gal containers over were, blueberries (3), crimson queen jap males(3) and Chinese patache tree( 3)...all of those looked super healthy and was convinced they would have roots, but after 9 weeks, didn't have any, so took have and potted like I did the one Hydrangea and the other half back in sand and thought to give more time...thank you for eating all this and taking your time...subbed a while back and love your videos...congratulations on the awesome progress with your house, looking AWESOME!!

It might be that you're taking some of these cuttings at the wrong time of year, and some of them are very tough to root. You should have good success with the hydrangea and if not, then it was a fluke and you can try again. The japanese maple cuttings will be very tough to root unless you have intermittent mist set up. The laurel should be taken as semi-hardwood cuttings in mid to late summer, not as softwood cuttings. Leafy evergreen plants should, for the most part, be taken as semi-hardwood cuttings in the mid to late summer. For blueberries, use tip cuttings. You can also root them as hardwood cuttings in the winter. Don't give up, just keep trying. You'll get it eventually. I recommend starting out with one or 2 plants and learning the best conditions for those plants and then expanding from there. Good luck!

Not to change the subject, but my wife and I just acquired potted a Japanized maple. Do you have any suggestions on planting it. I'm not as familiar with your summer weather there but if it's already acclimated to the sun and you keep it watered well through the summer, then you should be able to plant it now. I'd mulch really well too. If you're nervous about losing it because it gets much hotter down there, then I'd wait until fall and keep it in a shadier spot through the summer. Mulch is your friend when you're ready to plant and will keep the roots moist.

Not a favorite but I do lean toward the Hormodin #3 the most. Dip n Grow is perfect for people who just want to root a few plants for themselves and friends, and experiment at different times of the year, because it can be diluted to work with all kinds of cuttings.
