Ok my compadres you gotta get real and know who’s talking to you. Dude believes in God so Loved ONLY the elect. I was told by a Calvinist that “they don’t believe that Jesus spoke these words. It was just John misinterpreting Jesus”. Please keep your eyes open. They sound right but they don’t mean what you think they mean. They double speak and are deceitful. They believe Christ did not die for the world He only died for the elect the rest were already condemned to hell from before time.

Seth Gibson I agree. Believing is the first step though! If we BELIEVE His love, we would not sin. Unbelief is what causes us to sin! What caused Adam and Eve to sin! If they BELIEVED God’s Word, they could’ve challenged Satan. The enemy’s first attack was to God’s Word. To cause disbelief in God’s Word and promise, which then goes ahead to lure them to sin!

John 3-16 the most misunderstood & misquoted verse in the Bible. All we ever hear is GOD loves everybody & Christ Jesus died for everybody. Nothing could be further from the truth. Man cannot chose God by his own free will, natural man hates God & his neighbor. For the simple reason being as the Bible plainly teaches that the heart of man is deceitful above all things and desperately wicket Jeremiah 17v 9 KJV. Mans will is in bondage to sin and to Satan. When Adam the federal head of all humanity disobeyed Gods direct command not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good & evil he turned his back on God his creator and followed after the lie of Satan & all his prosperity continues to this day doing the very same thing. Therefore it’s God who does the choosing who will be saved not man. John 15 v 16 KJV. Plus John 17 v 9 -19 where Jesus said “ I pray for them: I pray NOT FOR the World, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them ( ie ) the elect. Now if God loved everybody in the world, but Jesus doesn’t pray for everybody in the world is Jesus contradicting his father ? Somehow I don’t think so.

The word "so" in the phrase "for God so loved the world" is the Greek word houtō(s) which literally translates to "in this manner, thus". Therefore the phrase "for God so loved the world" can and in my opinion should be translated as "for God in this manner loved the world" so this phrase is describing how God loved the world, not how much he loved the world. So how did God love the world? "That he gave His only begotten son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life", by giving His Son to die and save all those who believe in him, this is how God loved the world.
@gregjay9933
@gregjay9933 5 жыл бұрын
Theophilus Godlover your explanation of 'so' is interesting but this does not alter the heart of the debate, ie, does the word 'world' mean all sinners are loved and can believe, or does the 'world' mean those who do believe and therefore are the loved, ie, the elect?
@davidcastro253
@davidcastro253 5 жыл бұрын
@@gregjay9933 Actually there is another Greek word here that is also missinterpreted because of the English rendering, it is the word "whosoever" in the phrase "whosoever believes should not perish", many who read this text take this phrase to mean that anyone has the ability to believe, but that is not what the text says because the English word "whosoever" is not in the Greek text, it is the Greek word pas which is literally translated "All". So the text should read "...He gave his only begotten Son that all the believing ones should not perish..." So this text is not speaking about ability at all. For that we look to the words of Christ in John 6:44. What John 3:16 is simply saying, is that God gave his Son so that all those who believe in him should be saved. By closely examining this text, it reveals to us the intention of the Father in giving his Son to humanity (the world) to save a particular people. God never intended to save all humanity, if so it wouldn't be difficult for him to do, but only to save a particular people. The word "world" has many meanings in the writings of John but in this text I think it means humanity, all without distinction. But only "all the believing ones will not perish".
@gregjay9933
@gregjay9933 5 жыл бұрын
@@davidcastro253 you seem to be playing with words here. I agree with your statement, “all those who believe in him should be saved.” After all, those who do not believe are certainly not going to be saved. The question is, can all sinners believe so as to be saved? Calvinism says no, only the elect can be saved. This is why we have a debate! If John 3:16 can be interpreted to say that not all sinners can be saved then we have a contradiction with other passages of Scripture. So much of the Bible clearly teaches that God loves all sinners, that Jesus died for all the sins of the world and that God desires for all to come to repentance. Why would the Father give his Son to humanity (the world) only to save a particular people? Considering that God is infinite in love, rich in mercy and grace, kind in all His deeds, why would He choose to save so few of His fallen creation? In the case of the Japanese, this would be 1%. Remember what the angel said to the shepherds - I bring you GOOD NEWS of great joy which will be for ALL THE PEOPLE. This is certainly not good news for the non-elect. And notice the good news is for ALL THE PEOPLE. This is why the Lord does not wish for any to perish but FOR ALL to come to repentance. Your claim that God never intended to save all humanity is easily refuted.

@@gregjay9933 I think it's in the word " world " or "kosmos" in the Greek which helps me to understand. I think, ( if I can remember) that kosmos can be brought to mean the world as in a whole or a select few...say a people group or nation. For me I think it is rendered best as people group considering it's context.

@@lew1689 I note your choice of words “think”, “can be brought to mean”, when referring to the world. 20 years ago if someone told me that in the future I would be debating fellow Christians about who God loves, I would have said you must be crazy. At that time I would have said, “Why would anyone doubt that God loves the whole world - God is LOVE?” Today, due mainly to the teaching of popular Calvinists such as J Piper, J MacArthur, RC Sproul, DA Carson and many others, the nature of God’s love has changed, and the object of God’s love has also changed. With large sections of the Christian community now supporting such views, we older Christians are sitting down wondering how this has happened. Is the Holy Spirit now touching the hearts of Christians and leading them to believe that God does not really love all of His fallen creation, or, has the God of this world infiltrated the church in such a way that he is influencing the minds of Christians to believe that words such as “world”, “all people” “whosoever”, etc, don’t really mean what they say. Can’t you see that If God wanted to say that He only loves the elect, or that He desires only for the elect to be saved, then that is what He would have clearly said?

God doesn't even want anyone to perish into hell he wants all to be saved. 1 Timothy 2 3-4 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. God did not destine us onto wrath but to obtain salvation through Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5 9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ. God calls hell the place reserved for the devil and his angels not created for man. Of course many will go, but again Christ died for all.

Sin allows for more sin, not demons. People really get that confused and then think that there's a demon behind every bush just waiting to ambush you when you sin. Then you have a demon of this or that rather than addressing your condition as being sinful. Don't tell yourself that you'll "never do that again" since Paul warned us that when the law came, sin sprang to life and what Paul resisted doing by trying to follow the law, he did give in to that sin and then broke the law since the law itself is powerless to save men, just like telling yourself to not do that sin again. Rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to build in you a resistance to that sin, which is the part of the sanctification process; don't embrace it but rather be grieved over it lest you rely on your own strength to save you in which it can't! It's all a work of God!

YAHUSHUA, He whom you call Jesus, has spoken to THIS generation. More of His Word at the bottom of this comment; "2/14/11 From YahuShua HaMashiach, Our Lord and Savior The Word of The Lord Spoken to Timothy For All Those Who Have Ears to Hear Thus says The Lord: Blood pours down, a waterfall of tears flow down! Rivers of tears and blood run through the desolate places, yet no growth is seen; nothing at all sprouts forth from the hard and cracked ground! The sound of the charadrion is not heard, neither do the doves come out of their hiding places in the morning; no song is heard... Blood pours down to cover the mountains! Blood pours down and tears cover the land! Blood and tears fall upon the parched ground, yet only dust and ashes remain. The earth cries out in the morning, and the people mourn at eventide; from dusk until the dawn, the bodies are piled up in heaps! The whole world loves violence, and over all this murder barely a tear is shed; the voice of weeping and lamentation is rarely heard above a whisper. And the cries of every unborn child is muffled by the sound of their mother’s dying womb, as her heart becomes stone... The light of her eyes darkening; her life, forfeit. Mankind is covered in wickedness! The breadth of the whole earth is filled with every kind of evil! Every tree is dry and bears bitter fruit! For the heart of man is black, the void within him deep, a widening chasm filled with deep darkness, sheer cliffs on every side!... Every branch withers, no more will leaves appear, dry and dead branches ready to be broken off and cast into the fire. The heart of The Lord your God is very heavy. The heart of The Lord is enraged, and is very heavy. The sorrow of The Lord is deep and infinite. My people, let it be known to you, I take no pleasure at all in what I must do, in what must be done - NO PLEASURE AT ALL! Says The Lord. As My hand draws back, blood pours down! As I strike the earth in My anger, My tears run down! As famine spreads forth across the land, My heart is rent inside Me over the hardness of men’s hearts! As My face fills with the heat of My fury, My eyes are set ablaze with fire over that which I see! My tears run down, My blood pours down. As My own servants turn from Me and run, as My own beloved, whom I have called sons and daughters, turn and fight against Me, as My own body betrays Me, My blood pours down, My tears run down. As the nations come together and bind My hands and My feet, My tears run down... As they bruise Me and spit in My eyes, While mocking Me, My tears run down... As they pierce My side, My blood and Tears run down together!... As My own people drive in the nails still, I am risen up from My place with My arms Spread apart, waiting to receive them! My blood runs down, the tears run down... OH MY PEOPLE, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?! Hard generation! Sleeping children! Even My own fall asleep, unable to watch with Me for one hour; their hearts hardened, unwilling to weep with Me in this last hour. Do you not understand My sorrows, little flock? They refuse to be healed! Therefore, I must destroy them!... My blood runs down, and they refuse it! My tears fall like rain upon the nations, yet they will not lift their head, nor do they hold out their tongue to drink it! Where have all My children gone?! They choose death! THEY CHOOSE DEATH! And at the last day, they shall surely receive it; they shall taste of it to the fullest! Therefore do My tears run down; therefore do the rivers run like death through the waste places. Beloved, they heap up death, only to throw themselves upon the heap! Lo, they have made their covenant with death, and with the grave they are in agreement! They burn candles and make sacrifices to other gods; yea, they bow down to them! Behold, they shall be slaughtered and burned together!... The whole field is diseased, every leaf is blighted and withers, every stalk is rotten even to the roots! It must be purged and burned with fire! Therefore do My tears run down; therefore does My sorrow continue on, forever. The wound is incurable! Therefore My love will weep, and My heart will wail, forever. Have you not read My words, little flock? Are your ears yet dull in hearing? Yet My words shall not return void. For the beasts of the earth languish, and the creatures of flight fail to soar, for they know what is coming. Lo, I have nourished and brought forth young children to weep in your places, for you were unwilling. And still the mighty stand proud, and the feeble follow close behind in their example, refusing to bow down, covering themselves in pretense while wearing many disguises, until the face they behold in the mirror has become unrecognizable to them. THEY DO NOT KNOW ME!... My blood runs down, yet I do not know them! My tears run down, yet My own people remain Unclean, hiding always in their deceitful houses!... From the least to the greatest, I tell you, They have surely hated Me!... Therefore I am come down to take My spoil, To purge and to slaughter! Blood and fire! Rivers of blood and pillars of smoke!... This world is condemned, And The Father has declared its end!... I AM COME DOWN![1]... Says The Lord." ~ "3/15/11 From The Lord, Our God and Savior The Word of The Lord Spoken to Timothy For The Lord’s Little Flock, and For All Those Who Have Ears to Hear Thus says The Lord: Little flock, how is it you say within yourselves the way of The Lord is not equal? How is it you feel as though upon this servant I have poured a bounty, yet you remain desolate? Beloved ones, by whose power were you called forth into existence? To whose joy were you created? By whose favor were you born into this world by way of water and blood? Therefore, again I say to you, who you choose is everything. For I do not withhold My love, yet on account of your flesh you do always step backward. Consider the woman who touched My robes and was made whole. Tell Me, how is it that she received and you do not? Was she so highly favored, that she should receive and you should not? Beloved, come close and walk beside Me, for you are indeed highly favored! And all who grab hold of Me shall surely share in all that is Mine. Little flock, My ways are equal, yet the ways of My people remain unequal. For I have indeed poured out My life for you, yet each one must decide how deeply they drink. Do you not see? My blessings are equal for all who receive of My blessings, and My grace sufficient for all who trust in Me. Thus among those who come to Me, one is not favored over another, nor is My love bestowed by measure. Rather it is you who receive by measure, resisting on account of all these deceitful weights, trust which remains altogether lacking. Therefore do not confuse My love with the calling I have purposed for another, nor compare the gifts of the Spirit with The Blessing. For those I have called to serve shall indeed be given gifts, each in accordance with their faith and My will. And those who receive the greater gifts shall also bear the greater burden, even in the heat of the Day. Therefore, again I say to you, The Lord’s ways are indeed equal, Yet the ways of men remain unequal... I love how he shows expresses this, but then he goes and says that God creates people to be evil and never come to Him at all. That He enjoys sending them to Hell cuz it gives Him glory even though God says He never takes joy in the death, destruction, or punishment of anybody. So how could He create people He didnt love to not be saved? Does He not love them? Well I don't think so at all. Of course He does. I think the closest you can get with a Calvanistic idea of doomed from the womb is when Mike Winger says that God creates people even though he knows those people will reject Him by their own choice and action. They are damned by him from the beginning they had choices it's just God knew of their choices ahead of time and despite knowing they'd reject Him gave them life and chances to repent. Now I'm sure it's far more complex then this as God is complex and has naby reasons to do what He does but it seems strange that what Calvanism says seems to be against the gospel. I mean RC Sproul says God has no love for the wicked only hate, solely. He does not want them to be saved. He even said he cringes when hearing sermons of God loving everyone even the wicked sinner, having to hold himself back from breaking up the sermon. What is happening???? So much confusion out there with us in the world May God lead us all to pastors that bring Him glory.

RC Sproul says that, "When I hear preachers say that God loves everyone unconditionally, I want to stand up and scream" So, do these men disagree? No, they don't. JP is using words in a manner that may cause some to think he's teaching something he doesn't actually believe. Not that JP doesn't believe what he is saying, of course, he does . . . but that what he is saying will not be understood, in its essence, by most who hear him say these things. Is it their fault that 'God created Satan evil' and let him loose on this earth, John 8:44 kjv, Colossians 1:16 kjv. Those verses sums up God ordaining, or for His purpose why Satan exists. God also rejected Saul as king, rejected all the nations that were around Israel, hardened pharaoh's heart just to make His name great and on and on. God does choose those who He wants saved and rejects (hates) the rest. God also destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, not sparing a single person other than Lot and his family. I agree with everything except with trusting in God as the ONLY requirement. He also commands us to daily repentance. Yes, Faith must come first before repentance can take place, but Paul said “ show me your faith without works and I’ll show you my faith BY my works.” People take that as a work based salvation but the Bible makes it clear it is not the case. If you sinned, after salvation you no longer desire to do that which is wicked but now you press on to do things, BECAUSE you have been regenerated (not in order to be), which are good that you are now able to do them in faith and in Truth. Just thought that was important to share.

Paul didn't say that. James did. (James 2:18). Also, James isn't talking about salvific justification. James is talking about justification towards our brothers, that we prove our faith in God to our brothers in Christ with our works. Paul says in Ephesians 2:8-9 that we're saved by grace alone. This only happens if we repent obviously, but once we repent we're saved and that's permanent. So in conclusion: Yes, indeed faith alone saves us.

That is what this means, not that you must work "first" to have salvation. That would be abominable, because it means that you could be righteous before God on your own merit. We are saved to good works, not saved by good works. What good works did the thief on the cross do, yet Jesus assured him that he would be in heaven because he believed in Jesus. God didn't love all those nations that He used Israel to destroy, and Israel is God's chosen elect nation to carry His name before the world. God hardened pharaoh's heart, God rejected Cain's sacrifice, God predestined Judas to betray Jesus and end up in Hell (Judas) forever. Jesus told his disciples, "Did I not choose you?". The Bible has proof after proof that God doesn't love everyone but chooses who He wants to be His own and brings them to salvation; and people need to know this so that they don't think that God loves them regardless and then wind up in Hell, lost forever.

Tossing salt many Christians wrongly assume that God hates in the same way men hate. Hatred in people is generally thought of in terms of strong emotional dislike for someone or something. However, in God, hate is a judicial act on the part of the righteous Judge who separates the sinner from Himself. This is not contradictory to God’s love, or His love for sinners. God has made it possible for sin to be forgiven so that all can be reconciled to Himself. Ultimately, the sinner will experience God’s hatred of sin by suffering eternal separation from Him. Remember, God is “not willing that any should perish but that ALL should come to repentance.”

Calvinist parcel words what you sounds good but let’s look deeper...do you mean you were in a state totally deprivety as in dead as a door nail. Do you mean that God regenerated (born again) you before you could believe due to irresistible moving of The Spirit? Do you believe you were predestined from before time to be one of the “elect”? Do you believe that God predestined people to hell before the beginning?

No, God doesn't love the one with a reprobate mind. Did God love all those who were destroyed in Sodom? Did God send them to Heaven? No. God gives sinners over to a reprobate mind since all they desire is sin; not righteousness. And when that happens, that's a judgment pronounced on that person from God; not love, but wrath. The end game here is Hell and eternal punishment!

In one sense God has a general love for all mankind whom He has made in His image. But in another sense He has a special saving love for the elect.....see Ephesians 1:4-11. Also God does hate certain people according to Psalm 5:5, Psalm 11:5 and Romans 9:13-14. I see everybody here is skipping over these verses. His hatred is righteous indignation and not like ours. Nor does it contradict His love. God is perfect and knows how to perform all His attributes righteously and perfectly. You mean to say that when someone ends up in Hell forever, suffering in the flames that God still loves that person? God is the destroyer of the body and soul. His love is withdrawn once you draw your last breath if you have not repented of your sins and turned to Christ for forgiveness.
@timestealr2967

I do agree with you in part; God doesn't love the sinner or remove any love He has for them once they're in Hell. Hell is the final judgment and where the full wrath of God is poured out on sinful and unrepentant men. The Bible says that every non-saved person has the wrath of God abiding on them (while they are still living on earth), not love. God does grant grace to all in that He's patient, not willing that any should perish (His elect that is) but come to repentance, but grace doesn't mean love; grace is unmerited favor, not love. You could grant me the grace to travel to a distant country, but that didn't mean that you granted me the love to do that; just the allowance of that. God sends the rain on the just AND the unjust. Both benefit from creation, both are subject to the pitfalls of creation, but both are not chosen to be in God's family for all eternity. So, in short, if you're not part of God's sovereign elect, then there was no love on you from God at all. Remember Jacob and Esau; God hated Esau even before Esau was born or had done anything wrong and Paul used this example to explain God's elect and that He doesn't love everyone.

@@timestealr2967 I agree with the hatred God has for sinners (Psalm 5:5, Psalm 11:5, Proverbs 6:16-19, Romans 9:13-14) who remain under His wrath, and that He does not have this divine hatred for the elect. Jesus used the same Greek word in the New Testament as Paul did in Romans 9 when Jesus said he who does not hate his mother and father is not worthy of being my disciple. It means that the love God had for Jacob was so deep and incomparable that it sounded like His lesser love for Esau was like hatred. Of course Jesus does not want us to literally hate our father and mother, since hatred is equated to murder and the greatest command is to love God and neighbor.

@@alihoussney7870 You're comparing New Testament Greek to Old Testament Hebrew. When Paul cited Mal. 1:2, he knew Hebrew but still translated it into the Greek imperative. In other words, Paul didn't say in Romans 9 that God meant He loved Esau less than Jacob but the imperative stresses a disdain for Esau in that God passed him over for Jacob due to that hatred of Esau. Now, keep in mind that there's nothing we do or can do to contribute to God's love or hate towards us; this is done as a part of predestination and election on God's part. Also, the wrath of God abides on the non-saved, which isn't a lesser love of those than the saved but rather an imperative that shows God's disdain for unrepentant sinners in that His anger and hatred towards sin and the sinner is ever present, which is why Hell is a place of eternal torment as the sinner never repents of his/her sin while in Hell but still gnash their teeth and wag their tongues at God for putting them there and it's God's wrath against sin and the sinner that keep the fires of Hell burning for all eternity with the sinners having an eternal residence there. They can't and will never repent and God will never allow sin to go unpunished.

Stacey Leigh Hello. I think there is something that many are missing in Romans 9 and the hardening. Watch for the examples Paul uses to explain who Israel is. (Rom 9: 6 ¶ Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:) Rom 9: 18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. ...That’s about Israel..... Rom 11: 7 ¶ What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded Pharaoh was like an anti type of the state of Israel in Paul’s day. Pharaoh was hardened (he was already a wicked man though) so that God would make His power known throughout the nations. Look at Israel..... Rom 11: 8 (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day. 9 ¶ And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them: 10 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway. 11 ¶ I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather 👉🏻through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles,👈🏻 for to provoke them to jealousy. The two vessels made from one lump is Israel.... Rom 11: 7 ¶ What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded Rom 9: 6 ¶ Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: The state of Israel is being compared to those whom the promises were MADE TO and CAME THROUGH (compared) with those to whom the promises CAME TO. Rom 9: 6 ¶ Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: 7 👉🏻👉🏻Neither,👈🏻👈🏻 because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. Not all Israel is of Israel just like not all of Abraham’s children were counted for the promises seed (Jesus) I can go through verse by verse if you like. I only wanted to point out what I see as the obvious parallels to help you see that the premise most have about this passage isn’t correct. One more quick thing..... Rom 9: 22 ¶ What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: Exodus 32: 7 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves: 8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 9 And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: 10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation. 11 ¶ And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand? 12 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever. 14 And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people. Israel (the ones through whom the promises were to come) was prepared for destruction and God was going to make His power known on those vessels of wrath but instead He was long suffering.... Exo 33/3 Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way. 4 ¶ And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments. 13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people. 19 ¶ And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom 👉🏻I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.👈🏻 God was merciful to Israel in that He didn’t destroy them because He of the promises made to Abraham. The Messiah would come through them so that He might have mercy in the vessels of mercy prepared for glory. The mercy He had on both groups was not because of works but because of His will. He chose to have mercy through faith in Christ which makes one part of Israel Rom 9: 31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. 32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; I hope that makes sense. God bless

Calvinism is well known for its inconsistencies and Piper certainly did not disappoint in this instance. Piper stated, “This love is indiscriminate - it may be spoken to, promised to, applied to EVERYONE WITHOUT EXCEPTION because that is what it says.” And yet, Piper has previously written, “The full, saving effectiveness of the atonement that Jesus accomplished is LIMITED to those for whom that saving effect was prepared.” On one hand Piper says God’s love is applied to EVERYONE WITHOUT EXCEPTION, and on the other hand he says, “The full, saving effectiveness of the atonement that Jesus accomplished is LIMITED to those for whom that saving effect was prepared.” Piper continues with his inconsistencies by stating, “John 3:16 expresses what we love to call, ‘the free offer of the Gospel’. There are NO LIMITS to this offer.” What happened to LIMITED ATONEMENT? Calvinists seem to have great difficulty recognises their own inconsistencies.

Hey Greg. I would love to chime in with you with this just for fruitful discussion. My apologies if I write something too long!! It does seem inconsistent to say that God's love applies to "everyone without exception" while also saying that the work of the cross is effective for a limited amount of people (from beforehand). In my reading of John 3:16 and to my understanding of Pastor Piper's remarks, I actually don't see these claims as being inconsistent (I'm not arguing for the doctrine of Limited Atonement as a whole; I merely just want to focus on the claims you highlighted in your comment). First, God's LOVE for "the world" (with focusing on the type of God's love expressed in John 3:16) does not lead to inevitable salvation for the individual. Truly, God sent his son to die on the cross so that one MAY believe, not WILL believe. The very presence of God's love expressed in this way does not equate salvation; faith leads to salvation. I don't believe you to be claiming the opposite, but I find it necessary to point that out for this next part. Second, if I understand Piper correctly, he may simply be referring to the idea that God shows his love for the whole world in that the finished work of Christ is SUFFICIENT for ANYONE who believes to receive eternal life). What a glorious and amazing love he expresses to all in that way! The sufficient work of the cross, however, is not EFFECTIVE for all naturally (unless someone take's the viewpoint of a Universalist, which I am not a believer in). What Pastor Piper means by "effective" really is the type of faith that effects salvation. Indeed, their is a condition of faith for salvation within John 3:16 as well, isn't there? "To the one (or "whoever" in most translations) who believes" will receive eternal life. To THAT person who believes is the finished work of Christ ultimately effective. I believe that is what Pastor Piper is going for in his written claim. So even if you don't necessarily believe in the whole doctrine of Limited Atonement (which I myself am working out what I believe with it!), I think it may be fair to say that these specific claims are really not inconsistent if you understand the viewpoint well enough. Other issues with Calvinism or Pastor Piper will surely arise for you and for me as well. If there is anything else you disagree with me on or if I need to clarify on something, please I would be delighted to continue the conversation. **Just another thought on Piper's remark about "the free offer of the Gospel." There is a difference between the OFFER of the gospel and the FAITH PLACED in the gospel. An offer of the gospel for all does not inevitably lead to someone being saved. It is merely the offer or message preached TO all. As we see even in our lives, some reject it while some truly believe in it. But the work of the cross ULTIMATELY is effective for those who do believe (again, stemming from what I talked about above). Either way, we have a job in preaching the gospel of grace to the ends of the earth!

Greg Jay, the Bible supports Predestination (what you call Calvinism). That's the only reason to believe it. Now where it gets very strange is the Bible also supports free will. I understand that is a contradiction to human logic. But they are both in the Bible. You cannot argue against predestination. The Bible is rife with verses that unequivocally say God chooses us, even against our will. However, you also have verses like J3:16 where it seems to be an open-ended offer. So you either must throw the Bible out and not accept any of it, or you must accept this strange paradox which defies human logic. Piper does understand this, which is why you accuse him of contradicting himself. No human being can possibly understand these truths. We were not meant to. We must just accept what is revealed to us, strive to understand the best we can, and live by faith.

@@alecbell709 At the heart of this debate is the question of who God loves and who Jesus died for. If Jesus died effectively for the elect only, or as Piper says, “The full, saving effectiveness of the atonement that Jesus accomplished is LIMITED to those for whom that saving effect was prepared,” then can one say honestly that God loves all sinners the same. Arthur Pink said, “When we say that God is sovereign in the exercise of His love, we mean that He loves whom He chooses. God does not love everybody.” Piper, on the other hand, keeping true to the Bible, maintains that “God’s love is INDISCRIMINATE - it may be spoken to, promised to, applied to EVERYONE WITHOUT EXCEPTION.” How can a God who is infinite in love, rich in mercy and grace, kind in all His deeds, choose to save only a small percentage of His fallen creation? In the case of the Japanese, this would be 1%. Your comment, “Truly, God sent his son to die on the cross so that one MAY believe, not WILL believe.” Rather than say, “one MAY believe, I maintain the Bible teaches, ANYONE may believe. The question is, has God chosen certain ones to believe, ie, the elect, or can any sinner believe? The Bible says we are chosen IN CHRIST. Does this mean we are chosen to be in Christ or does it mean we are chosen BECAUSE we are in Christ? Jesus said, ‘You did not choose me, I chose you’. The Calvinist immediately thinks of chosen for salvation. Jesus was saying He chooses certain ones for service, and He still does this today. To suggest that Piper was referring to the idea that God shows his love for the whole world in that the finished work of Christ is SUFFICIENT for ANYONE, makes God’s offer of Salvation an insincere offer. In fact, it makes God rather disingenuous because He knew that the non-elect could not respond to something that was offered. [An offer of the gospel for all does not inevitably lead to someone being saved] Agreed. This is why Jesus said,” you ARE UNWILLING to come to Me so that you may have life.” For a detailed examination of these issues I strongly recommend you visit soteriology101.com

@@johannwilder1437 you are correct when you say the Bible supports predestination. You are also correct when you say the Bible supports free will. Where I disagree is your comment - “No human being can possibly understand these truths. We were not meant to. We must just accept what is revealed to us, strive to understand the best we can, and live by faith.” Where Calvinists get it wrong is their interpretation of what is meant by predestination. The Bible teaches that God predestined, in eternity past, what was to become of those who freely come to Christ. And what becomes of those who freely come to Christ is that they are adopted as sons, sanctified, glorified, etc. The dispute here is the object of predestination - God predestining who will be saved Vs God predestinating what becomes of those who freely place their faith in Christ. Jesus said, ‘You did not choose me, I chose you’. Jesus was not talking about Salvation, He was saying He chose them for service, and He still does this today. Yes, the Bible supports predestination and being chosen, but how we interpret those words determines whether we are going to be consistent or inconsistent with God’s Word.

Yet those who grab hold of their First Love With all their heart, with all their mind, With all their strength and with all their soul, Shall never go hungry, nor shall they thirst anymore; Nor shall the heat of the noonday Sun do them any harm... Yea, even all their tears shall be wiped away In the house of The Lord." trumpetcallofgod.com

Quite frankly, God that depends on our belief system to determine whether or not we should be loved by God, is either an invention of the human ego, or has a serious personality disorder.

God loves the entire world. But the world does not love him. And because our nature is to not love our creator he chose to open the eyes of some to this magnificent love to make his glory known. Did Christ die for the world,yes. But no one would accept this love unless he first revealed it to them. How would we love our enemies if God didn’t love them as well? How much must it hurt God that his creation won’t accept his love and in turn chooses disobedience over faith in Christ.

God's not "hurt"; he is perfectly happy within himself. His state of being does not depend on us, or what we do. Sure there are some anthropomorphisms in scripture, but they are merely used as an aid to help us understand. Study the doctrine of "impassibility".

Can Piper tell everyone that God loves them? Yes, he can, because he is empowered and liberated by moral relativism. A W Pink was more honest.

What Piper fails to mention is that in his Calvinistic theology God decides who will believe. There is no free will to believe. This is an error.

According to the bible, god is mainly full of anger and eager to punish. And then he sent his son on a suicide mission to save ourselves from our sins. This is really weird logic.

John Piper is NOT A CALVINIST!!!! HE IS AN ARMENIAN. This sermon is an outrage of ignorance. Piper in this message says that Christ died for everyone... furthermore he teaches that salvation is by Mans Choice! Whoever said that John Piper was a Calvinist? He is not a good teacher of Scripture.

He walked past the main point of God's Love when he failed to mention that "whosoever believes"... is a condition. If this condition is not met, eternity will be spent in hell. He emphasizes the scope of the offer but misses on the required condition, believing in God...which requires active faith. God's love is clearly conditional. smh

God so loved the world.... does that mean He loved the ground, the lakes, oceans, mountains, vegetation, etc. No, He loves humanity in the universal sense, because He made all people and the gospel message can now be applied to all people groups. In the context of the age in which this was written, before the new covenant, only the Jews were considered to be God's people, but after Christ died, salvation was then for all the worlds people; Jews and the "Gentiles", which meant anyone, but the Jews. Depending on the context, the word "world" can mean different things, that is why some people are having trouble with this verse. I hope this will be a help.

Actions speak louder then words John. You talking about love means nothing when you constantly push hatred. If the church stays with you and the way most of you act the church will become obsolete. But you love your pride and traditions more than you love people and by extension Jesus “what you do to the least of these you do to me”. You show that you enjoy pushing people away from Christ.

but you must read further. John 3:18 "Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God." See, the unbelievers, and by extension, the fallen world, are condemned *already*. Otherwise, why would he come to save?

The small print on John Piper's Calvinism: "I love you so much that I have sovereignly predetermined you to never believe in me, just so I can punish you with unquenchable fire for all eternity so I can get a little bit more glory for myself. I am just saying this offer to you so I can look good and magnanimous, but I have no intention of ever fulfilling it."

That's because what Piper taught in this message is NOT Calvinism. He's a very confused and confusing man. Man fell through his own sin. God did not have to save any, yet he saved some. What's wrong with that? Some sinners will rightly get the justice they deserve. Some will be pulled from the muck to serve God, which is mercy. Did God not say, "I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy..."? It's God's world, not ours.
