I did it (too)! My babes were planted from seed and had matured to about 1ft tall in clumped sections so I needed to thin them before they choked one another. Should’ve done it much earlier but…life was living lol… so yea I actually transplanted them one day BEFORE watching this video. They were wilting the next morning so I was concerned. I also had removed all the dirt from around the roots before putting them in new holes which I didn’t know was incorrect until I watched the video. Long story short, they were limp for three days but I supported them with sticks and watered them each evening and on day four they were fully back to life. 3 weeks later they are almost 4ft tall!!!! Hope this helps another newbie!

I grew a few sunflowers starting in water, some I started in the house and some I started outside when it got warm out. 90 percent of them are a success especially the one I transplanted from a pot to the ground. That plant been through so much. When my plant was 3 feet I accidentally broke the stem. I was able to save it with duck tape. I can’t wait to see those giant flowers that it’s about to produce. The plant have 4 flower buds on one getting ready to sprout. What a lucky plant

Good Video! I figured out this same method after many tries. Chipmunks eat all my seeds where I WANT them, so I disperse seed everywhere and try to transplant (Hell, i just leave em where they are this year) ;) I beleive you have cabbage moths, if you see small white "butterflies" flitting around. I have the same problem. I stopped growing broccoli because it was a BAD problem 2 years ago and tried Kale in 2 containers. I have 2 cabbage moths flitting around. Tennis raquet works well. :)

I just planted some seeds last week, I am envious of your volunteers. Can you give us an idea of how old those that you were transplanting were? I have leaf hoppers that eat my kale as do grasshoppers. Here in FL kale doesn't like the heat although I once had a plant that stayed through 3 winters so you never know. Just like you never know about sunflowers. I had volunteers from the bird feeder a few years ago but I stopped feeding the birds (4 cats).

I transferred some sunflowers in a similar way, and they are all strong now. You mentioned that these were for flower cutting. Have you tried harvesting and roasting the seeds of the large, edible varieties? I've tried for years, but I must be making a mistake during harvesting, or prep, because I haven't had a single edible seed yet!

Hi Chris, ours get eaten by the birds before we can harvest any tangible amount of them. Do you have a fav large head variety? These are the poly headed varieties, which are great for cutting flowers. thx! eric.

Hi. I usually always start the sunflowers indoors and transplant and they’ve always done fine. Yours look great. Cabbage Loopers. They love any of the brassicas. They are the larvae of the little white moths you see flying around the garden. Little green worm looking things. You’ll usually find them on the underside of the leaves. DE will work well if you can get it on both sides of the leaves since it will get other pests also if loopers are not the cause. Bt works great but only works on soft bodied caterpillar worm type pests. It is a bacteria that is deadly to them but harmless to us and is organic. I use it on all the brassicas, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower etc.. Actually this is my first year ever growing cabbage so I’m curious to see how hard it will be to keep the loopers away since the heads grow so tight.

good to hear about gardening with sunflowers. i'm looking forward to the flowers this year. I use BT to keep the wax moths from ruining stored honeycomb frames, so I will use it on the plants as well, thanks again for the info Snow Pony, thx!

@snowpony001
@snowpony001 2 жыл бұрын
@@Zeldabug24 I wouldn’t worry about them being stunted as long as they get plenty of light and you transplant them into bigger pots once they get to a couple inches, then get them planted outdoors as soon as you can. I’ve transplanted 1 to 1-1/2 ft. Tall plants that were in 6 in. Pots before without any problem.

I have a sunflower that is 1 1/2 feet tall, 2 feet wide and in a large pot. It is infested with ants and the leaves are turning brown so I decided to transplant it to my garden. I started it in the pot because we have unforgiving chipmunks that will not allow a sprout to grow. The pot I have I believe is large enough to support a large sunflower but I was worried it was getting damaged. Upon trying to remove it from the pot the top probably 8 or so inches separated from the rest of the root system which went all the way down to the bottom of the pot. The roots that tore off were all very small, hairlike in size but I am concerned too many of them were separated from the stalk. There is probably a foot wide, 8 or so inches long roots connected to the stalk. I have put in the ground and added water with fertilizer mixed in. Is there anything else I can do to preserve the flower? I'm not concerned if the growth is stunted and it doesn't get as tall as it would normally. I just want to prevent it from dying if possible.

The only thing about sunflowers is you cant plant them too close or they will kill each other off. Then your stuck wondering why your plants are dying. It's simply too close. However seeing your success on transplanting im going to try to separate the ones that have grown together.
