Time to start transplanting! Finally! Here I'm showing how I'm experimenting with transplanting sunflowers deep like you would a tomato plant. Sorry about my shoulder! I'm still getting the hang of this. I'll try to keep shoulder appearances to a minimum in the future! Hope you guys like the video!
P.S. I know I said early May, and it's actually mid-May now but I filmed this a few days ago and haven't had time to edit and post it.
I created this video with the KZbin Video Editor ( / editor )

The sunflowers I grew in a small cup became leggy similar to this. I also planted some directly in the ground around the same time. The leggy ones bloomed quicker and the heads weren't as large as the ones planted in the ground.

You could have kept the one you pinched off and burred it deep. You don't have to bury them so deep but it does help for roots. and The vine is split because at a point in time you over watered them. The 3rd sprout didn't grow as big because it had no room in that little container, but it was still alive if the stem was green. t.t if you used water in the soil and drowned them out right before you plant them you could have separated them a little easier as well. Im also learning the spacing would be like 1 per square. Im not 100% sure yet. Im still learning as well.

Keana Mills hey I recently planted sunflowers in cells and noticed that some cells sprouted 2 sunflowers... do you recommend I pinch one off so the other one in the cell grows stronger?
@Kittypopvegas

@@billrichardson6620 Yes! Absolutly! It will grow 100% more stronger rather than having to share or fight for nutrients, light, soil, and space.

ive transplanted quite a few of my sunflowers into the ground that looked just like this and didnt bury them so deep and they also did fine. Only thing is i put a BBQ stake right next to them with bread ties and they grew big and healthy still! ; ) There really no need for this method. The little guys tend to straighten themselves out on their own so long as they have a little help with a small stake.

cayenne pepper lightly dusted on slightly misted plant leaves. Better to deter it than to hurt it. plus there will only be more and more coming in since its outside nature.

I would have planted them deep, not sideways. Deep gives them an advantage in moisture and nutrients. Sideways is just weird. The one you pinched off, might have grown two heads.🤔😥 Always water new plants in. Always.

I to am a newbie to all this...can i transplant from my pot as i worry as they are about a foot long now and i feel they need more room. They are only plated 4" apart. Should i leave them there is five in one pot but they are thriving faster. The weather has been windy and feel they will need stability if i do decide to move them to my flower bed. I will definetily give them fish droppings after.

I'm very new to gardening all together...so please don't take offense to this question, could it be that there are 3 seedlings growing in the same small pot that could cause the legginess??? Like i said I'm new to this and have my first set of sunflowers growing now. But read to thin them out when the second leafs grow... just wondering. Thank you for the video!!!! I can't wait to see more from you!!!

I don't know if this could help but what I know is that if they are planted together, they would compete for the sun because they get shaded by their competitors, thus, the legginess starts. (to reach sunlight better)
@Advisor-sc1py
@Advisor-sc1py 5 жыл бұрын
Hello! No offense taken. The get leggy due to getting less sun and air movement than they'd really like. Your theory could be so if there were more than 2 or 3 seeds in the 2 1/4 pot. If you have plenty of room and pots, plant only one seed per pot. xo

So far so good. It's been about 3-4 days since I transplanted them and they aren't showing any signs of dying yet, so it's very promising. If you have other leggy plants besides sunflowers, I recommend researching a bit. There are actually quite a few plants that can be planted deep if they get too leggy. Thanks for watching and good luck with your garden!

Curious - does he really know what he's doing? - I suspect not. Their spacing is minuscule - do the grow only 7" tall? Crowded plants = disease & pests, stunted growth, early plant death etc.
