I am an Indian woman and over the past few years have interacted with many Koreans. I agree that there is a gender divide in Korea, which is widely seen in the working culture there. There are many issues between the genders(eg . Men feel unfairly treated due to the mandatory military service and women feel unfairly treated which has led to the agressive feminism movement in Korea, which is not what we would consider feminism to be). However, I will point out that I noticed a stark difference between how Korean men treat women vs what happens back at home. I don't want to say that they treat women with more respect. I would rather say that they treated women in more or less the same way they treated men. And sometimes I feel that is what women really want. To be treated like a fellow human, than being treated as a person of the opposite gender. An interesting thing to point out would be the gaming culture in Korea. A lot of Koreans game and I was pleasantly surprised to see so many women in it. And they are not berated saying women don't know how to game, or ridiculed or made fun of. They genuinely feel women can do it too and don't go all crazy just because a woman is part of their team. II really liked seeing such a safe and supportive community during my time with them. I will also say that toxic masculinity in Korea is present in the military. If anyone wants to know more about it, I recommend watching the drama DP on Netflix.

@@samuraijosh1595 Koreans are Asians. Most Koreans are nerds or introverts, and I am too. Therefore, there are no friends around me who do vlog. I will tell you the truth about Korea that I experienced while living in Korea for about 20 years. Korean Men: South Korean men are the most highly regarded in the world among Korea, Japan and China, but I think the reality is not. Korean men are not as unique as Japanese men, nor are they as smart as Chinese men. On a personal basis, Korean men are the ugliest of the three countries. Korean men are the tallest, but have the smallest eyes. Korean plastic surgery: Living in South Korea, I realized that South Korean plastic surgery is not as serious as the Western press exaggerates. However, it is still at a serious level worldwide. In other words, not all good looking South Koreans have plastic surgery. There are many naturally good-looking people around me, but there is a certain percentage of people with as good looks anywhere in the world. If we limit ourselves to those who have not undergone plastic surgery, the percentage is not higher than the world average. Although the amount of plastic surgery in South Korea is the highest in the world, most of them are simple upper eyelid surgery. The United States ranks first in plastic surgery sales, because major surgeries such as breast surgery are the mainstream. (In South Korea, large breasts are traditionally not a standard of beauty, so very few people have plastic surgery there)

If your masculinity is so fragile that it would get crushed by wearing make-up, then what's the point of being a man? Dear men, please feel free to do what you like and express yourself openly (of course as long as it doesn't hurt others). People who tease you are the only ones who are narrow-minded and ignorant and can't understand the maturity of embracing oneself, so don't mind them. You do you.

@@shreeshiva9421 make up is not so much about cover up, than it is about enhancement. It's like a form of art, which requires skills, and it is more nuanced that just "covering up". It is, most times, a means of expression. Also, your point could be applied to women as well, not only men, which erases the dichotomy altogether. These are two different debates. The subject at hand in this video is, will a little bit of make up change your whole gender? You tell me. Will it? It's just a superficial form of enhancement that anyone is free to use, regardless of gender, and that's what I am trying to point out. Lots of men who want to wear make up are being discriminated against, especially in our country. I simply stand for them, because they have the right to do whatever they want, without having to worry about narrow-minded people who fail to understand the bigger picture.

@@shreeshiva9421 I understand what you're saying, but let's take this analogy: Make up is like wearing clothes. Some people like wearing nice shirts etc, so we should let them have fun. Some people like being shirtless, we should let them have fun too. Surely, I'm not saying "All the people in the world *should* wear make-up!" I'm just saying, let's not give shade to those who want to wear it and like to wear it. 'Cos ultimately it's their life and their choice. I'll reiterate the important point again: Wearing make up is like wearing clothes. If you like it, do it. If you don't like it, then don't do it. Presence or absence of make up, doesn't decide one's gender (just like clothes) Let's all be nice to each other and not give any shame to people who like using make up.

Its always surprises me, each and everytime, when I hear from men that they don't talk about their emotions to each other in a serious way because I've always had friends of various genders come and talk about their experiences and emotions naturally. It never occurred to me until recently that I've never thought very much about relationships amongst men and maybe that's why this comes as such a shock to me. Edit: After reading various comments, it is surprising to see the negative connotations associated with makeup. Makeup, yes can be used to hide your insecurities but it can also be used as fun or as an expression of self. You can either write with a pen or use it to stab each other. Dear Mohak, I totally agree with your point that wearing makeup should not be the basis to define a person's gender and I am really glad you talked about it. Sorry to write a long comment but could not explain it in fewer words. Let me throw some light on Hinduism and ancient cultures on the beauty of men. Sanatan Dharma and our Vedic culture promoted Shree which not only means wealth but also opulence of beauty which should be a part of everyone's life. Shree Krishna is an example without explanation. so does this affect his masculinity, Mahadev, really strong and a vairagi still ornamented himself and his beauty is incomparable and he depicts a mixture of soft and hard beauty (masculinity). Now come to kings to local villagers, all with respect to their will/ need/ wish beautified themselves. Some of the beautifications like mehndi also have health benefit aspects related to them and that is not all. So, the conclusion of all lines above is that no one questioned a person's masculinity based on their appearance (attractiveness is another thing). Masculinity should be based on whether he is able to protect his family, is he able to nurture and feed his family, and whether he is able to guide his family to righteousness. Just see what are the 7 oaths taken by men during the wedding you will realize what is the position of men and women (both are equal). Since I have talked a lot, just want to say this is inconsistent with all religions and ancient cultures if suspected closely like Egypt for example. But few cultures, as time progressed, who were not into intellectual progression and peace instead wanted to satisfy their greed, lust and ego they just made definitions so hard and clear that suppressed free-thinking which soon became the norm. Last one thing: - see each society before colonizations and invasions.

Yes it's true & infact Korea sees lot of outer beauty standards as indication of wealth,status & hygiene. Infact they despise people with hair. In South Korea the beauty standards have been set impulsive practices that men need to adopt too like how women need to be attractive in corporate jobs & have a trimmed look. I understand soft masculinity but Korean society is actually more racial & un(up) rooted society who themselves look down on their own traditional values. I agree with whatever you have said about the masculinity in India. I have a lot of male friends and honestly, most of them discusses with me about thier break ups, heartbreaks, self doubt, even my little brother also, who finds it difficult to express himself before his friends. Like in girls night stay, we girls discuss about life, bfs, relationships, career etc but in guy's groups, all they do is 'guy talk' about girls and stuff. The guys generally do not talk about feelings or emotions, mostly when the guys hang out, they either make fun of each others, or discuss about politics, cricket, soccer etc but not about feelings and stuff. But the same guys, when they hangout with their gfs or female friends, they talk about their insecurities and raw emotions. One of my childhood gali ka friend told me one that its easier for him to talk about his emotions to me or his gf. Also, I stay with my bf, and he loves to do skincare routine, massages or make ups. Whenever, I do my night routine, or skincare routine on my week offs he immediately comes up to me saying he too wants it and if I don't do it, he will fight with me. He is fond of massages too, which is why, one day he called a muscular man who literally crushed his bones which he enjoyed a lot. My bf is okay with doing make up not much fond of it, even when I do it. One day I did his make up because we were going to attend a marriage ceremony of our friend, of course, I was all decked up, he felt as if he was falling flat before my dress up so he got a little upset saying, "I looking like an ugly idiot before you who do not deserve you." I felt bad, I didn't want to compromise either, so I did his make up very subtly, it didn't change his appearance completely, but ut sure did enhance his features a little bit. He felt so confident that it lifted his hopes and spirits high. People did compliment him on that wedding and he felt amazing that night that he wasn't moving away from the mirror that night. I was very happy for him. From then onwards, he started liking make ups but he asl me to do it on him on very special occasions not like me who does make up almost everyday. Hence, make up is someone's personal choice, people shouldn't be making fun of someone doing or not doing make up.
@PrantikaJagannath3 жыл бұрын
In India, it is a very hush hush thing. I know some guys who does make ups and skincare routine like my bf but they do not accept it or shy away or asks their gfs, female friends, sisters to not to disclose about it before anyone. I do not understand that why guys do not talk about real things.

And then there are men of 'Reject modernity embrace masculinity ' wale Jo kehte Hai ki makeup pehene wale mard aur emotional weak hote Hai or daadhi wale mard or emotionless strong hote Hai. I like the message you conveyed in the end "to put an end to toxic masculinity". Honestly, it's so important because young boys are taught from an early age to show no emotions or to not cry which is so wrong as men have emotions too and they are human beings just like other genders. It's feels like 'anger' is the only emotion a guy should have which is really toxic for him and his family. Also, I personally like guys who wear guy liners, kohl and nail paint if it suits them.But I won't go for dudes who put on lipstick and other stuff. But that doesn't mean we shame those men who like wearing makeup and also no need to shame men who don't like wearing makeup. I've also seen men who also shame women for wearing makeup calling her 'insecured' and 'fake'. Masculinity and femininity shouldn't really have a definition. Every boy and girl is very different. It's important to respect everyone's choices without being toxic.

Wearing makeup doesn't make you a less man, and also one of my favourite youtuber has said that "असली मर्द वो होता है जो औरतों की इज्जत करना जानता है (real man is he, who knows how to respect woman)" there's nothing wrong to wear makeup, just the stereotyped society.. that keeps judging them, keep calling them feminine for wearing makeup. And like what's wrong if they love girly aesthetics? They're also human. And by calling them gays bis trans won't make u look cool, it just shows that how down your mentality is. And kudos to you mohak 👏 for bringing up this topic!

Just a piece of info, a real man should respect everyone, not only women. And a real women should also respect everyone. If we only promote that men should respect women , then won't that again lead to gender inequality?

looking tough , building muscles and hiding emotions is not toxic masculinity . men naturally need to be tough mentally and physically to protect their family , guys dont show emotions because in hard times their partner or children need the assurance that he will provide them . imagine if your family is poor and someone in family is ill , if the father starts crying everyone will immediatly loose hope .

But most boys are forced to do that.. Which affects their mental health.. This thing should not be normalised!!

Ur right but there are many families and u may have seen in movies also where children really scared of their father and hesitate to share their feelings. Being tough in some situations gives hope and in other situations it portray toughness as insensitive person. We should behave according to situations and stop carrying same emotion in every situation. When a family member dies everyone cry including men that won't create hopeless environment. It's okay to cry when u really feel crying.
