Good video, as I'm a foreigner living in India with an Indian husband. Until today, I'm still scared actually to go outside by myself. Not only men, but in general all the people are staring and it makes me very uncomfortable. I'd rather have people come to me and talk to me and ask questions instead of staring at me with creepy eyes. There are some women now these days that often come to me and start talking and I can sense that it's also curiosity, as I think I'm the only foreigner in the neighborhood. Nevertheless, I want people to stop staring at me, so I can go about my life in India. I noticed, that dressing up more Indian style helps, but still, I don't dare to go out by myself without my husband for bigger groceries. It's funny, that they don't bother for foreign men, but when it's a foreign woman they all have to stare and it makes me sad in today's society. Most of people would be less rude if I tell them that my husband is Indian. I come from a very progressive and liberal country where men and women are equally treated from a young age and we are all taught in school and at home by our family how to properly interact with various kinds of people and opposite genders. My parents always told me: never to stare at other people, it's rude. no one else is your business and always treat them with the same respect as you want to be treated. I enjoy watching your videos, as it helps me to understand Indian culture better and to read into the country's issues.

According to the survey, what men fear the most when they approach a woman is rejection and what women fear the most is getting killed. As a girl, I can relate. Being a 15 year old girl, I think lack of healthy interaction with opposite gender in school is one problem that develop a sense of awkwardness between both genders regarding the opposite sex. Believe me, a friend of mine who studies in different school told me how in her school, the buildings of boys and girls are on opposite sides. They are not allowed to interact in school hours mostly and they even have a day timing system for boys and girls to go out during recess, so that interactions can be avoided. Moreover, some teachers still have a backward mentality that girls and boys shouldn't be friends with each other. Although, they are from a different generation so we can't really blame them EDIT: 1) Not all schools have this issue. There are exceptions where students are given a healthy environment to interact comfortably

I am a 17 year old girl. I have a friend who is a boy with whom I have studied 10 years. My mother has no problem with our friendship and she supports me.But my father and grandmother along with other relatives always judge me. I remember until 4th standard any student irrespective of gender could sit togather but after that girls and boys were divided. Even during my 10th standard boys and girls had separate classes even separate corners of the school and we used to meet them during language classes like hindi, odia or Sanskrit. Once I was called to submit my presentation to a teacher who was a class teacher of a boys section. When during recess break I went there ANOTHER TEACHER HELD MY HAND AND PUSHED ME AND QUESTIONED ME WHY WAS I THERE.Although the teacher to whom, I was going, was about to collect the presentation. So thats the mentality of some people.

Great content! I wish all the "creepy" Indian men watch this and are hit by some realisations! It's high time men and women of this country realise that what's portrayed as "romantic" and "funny" in Bollywood (and so often also in other Indian industries like Telugu,Kannada, etc. -e.g. Kantara) movies is actually really REALLY disrespectful and even debasing. I loved that you showed Akshay's clips from movies....I still remember how horrified I had felt watching his "love" story unfold in "Toilet:Ek Prem Katha".. they way he had decided to pursue his "love" interest: absolutely abominable! These people themselves live in privileged and protected spaces and unleash such horrid ideas of "heroism" into the society. I wish the movies would stop creating such idiotic and damaging narratives of what a hero is like. Ofc, the people need to use their own brains too! And that teasing can become a bigger issue as many teenagers watch Indian serials and they are influenced by them not knowing when to stop. So to avoid such situations they just avoid talking to boys. Well it also depends on the environment of the class, if the environment between boys and girls is friendly and casual in class then a girl can starts interacting with them. I studied in co Ed school and college, but the vibe is totally different in my school and College. Girls and boys can even sit together as friends in college and no one objects but in my school girls and boys rarely interact with each other. So it depends on the environment of the class.

I am a medical student and we have a subject called Forensic Medicine where we were discussing the subject of R*pe and sexual assault. The topic of consent came up and I was so shocked to see that literally no one in my batch knew about it. They laughed at the fact that one should take consent before anything sexual. And these are kids of rich people in a private medical college. The concept of personal space and boundaries literally doesn’t exist in India and I swear Bollywood has a lot of influence over the stalker culture. The schools not allowing proper socialisation between males and females have a role too. I’ve always loved talking to females in order to understand their side of the story and my god creepy stuff happens with them. Stalking, harassment, staring, etc. are common practices here in our country. I just hope with the introduction of internet and our ability to learn from foreign culture, the next generation will value consent and communication between the two genders.

Idk if being an introvert has to do with anything, but the watch thing happened with me too and I felt extremely uncomfortable. Also if people are staring at you, idk why but you feel their stares...specifically in the metro. Why is talking to the opposite sex such a big deal in childhood?? And suddenly after college you want them to have kids?? Thankfully I didn't have parents like that. I was in a Co ed school which normalised talking with anyone. My first encounter with a creepy man was in Mathura IN A TEMPLE, where we had gone to not just worship but donate some money to the temple. I was still a school girl, from a Hindu family, in the Northeast. The priest disgusted me with the way he touched me with the excuse that I must be held to be guided since I didn't look like I would understand when he speaks Hindi. while none of my family members were noticing. I WAS IN A SALWAR KAMEEZ WITH A LARGE DUPATTA. I did not know what to say or what to do. And even now that I'm in my 30s, the number of times I have noticed creepy men trying to record me or secretly take a photo of me!! And each such time, I was in a MODEST attire. After many unpleasant experiences in life as a woman, I have become very scared of being alone with any man under any circumstance. It's mentally tiring to have to fight every time such things occur, so I tell myself, "Sudharne waale toh hain nahin, apna hi energy jayega aur harassment bhi ulta apna hi hona hai" and hold it back. Apart from that, since I speak fluent Hindi, I already get exhausted from answering someone or the other very frequently that I am Indian, people can speak Hindi where I come from, a lot of my friends and cousins are as fluent as me and then I go on to explain where Tripura is. I recently realized why I feel anxious when I have to go anywhere alone and prefer to go out with someone who looks "more Indian" (mostly my boyfriend): to cut down the explaining and staring.

Sometimes I feel the creepy behavior is not just limited to young Indian men. Being stared at for no reason is creepy and both Indian men and women , young and old do it. I currently live in the US and rarely catch someone looking at me walking down the street or in restaurants, airport etc. But even in the US you set foot in an Indian restaurant you will catch a few aunties stare at you up and down like you are walking around naked. It is very uncomfortable and at least the younger generation should actively think about not adopting this habit. I always get this reverse cultural shock when I go back to India that its not considered rude to gawk and stare at people and it happens all the time in almost all public places.

My friend used to fall in love with a girl every other day when he started college. The first advice I gave him was to avoid watching Bollywood movies. Most Indian movies justify harresment. In my school days, I was friends with many girl students. We used to sit together, shared notes with each other and had lunch together. But one day in seventh standard, a lady teacher decided that boys and girls cannot sit together. Boys and girls were separated. On top of that, some boys in class started to make fun if I spoke to any girl saying that I had a 'line' with the girl. This made me extremely shy to approach any girl. All the bonds and friendship which I had made with those girls were broken never to be recovered again. It affected me throughout my teens and college days. Only after attaining certain age and having some financial freedom, I gained some confidence to approach women. But by then my youthful age of romance was over. It doesn't mean that I became a creep or a stalker. Since I was shy and taciturn, I internalised my problems but a lot of people who become creeps can't do it and they just express it in very disturbing ways. This a real mental health issue for young Indian men and only a very liberal attitude from society when they're children can help it. To begin, stop separating boys and girls once they attain puberty. Let them have as much interaction as possible and get to know each other.

Man I don't know where to start. I would be turning 24 soon and have gone through most of what you are saying. It is so that I can talk to women at work or otherwise normally, but I don't have any female friends. I don't believe in romance, more than having some type of connection. I have asked so many girls out and sad part is now I look back and know, I was not even a good friend of theirs, forget being a close or best friend. I have always been an introvert and that has led me to not be the talkative kid. I know how many girls would always be out of my approach, even if they were in my league, because I am that person who will not approach them. Not all Indian men are like that especially the younger generations like me who are more open minded. I am a 22 year old guy living in Bangalore and I never had a girlfriend before and yet to get my first kiss as I had been shy of girls. After 3 rejections recently, my childhood friend who is 21 year old now turning 22 soon has agreed to meet up after I asked her out via Instagram but she replied to it after almost a month as she isn't that active on the app and she replied yeah ok and then I asked her when we can meet and she is offline again and yet to reply and I am waiting. The whole male- female friendship is quite a weird zone. A lot of dudes are incapable of seeing a girl as 'just friend'. They feel entitled to romantic reciprocation from women that they are friends with and talk about being wronged if the girl clarifies that she is not sexually interested in them. I'd like to share something Till I was in 10th, boys and girls in our class talked normally. Yea, although in different benches (which was actually comfortable I'd say) we were comfortable while talking to boys and we also had many group projects which were done together. Then I went to college, very popular in Telangana for IIT (you guessed it right), there were different sections for boys and girls. Some sections did have co-ed, but all boys sat on one side and all girls on one side. And the most absurd thing, a bench was left in between boys and girls because boys and girls shouldn't talk with each other, you know!! (And we sat like 4 people in one bench)

I'm a 15 year old and i this is something i really wanna educate people about. Just today when I was coming back from my tution in an auto, random uncles were staring at me and making weird gestures.. that made me so uncomfortable. They did not say a word, but those eyes terrify me. Even one of my teachers has scolded me for sitting with guy bestfriend in class. This issue really needs some serious attention, for the betterment of our society, and most importantly, our safety.

What can I do man I want a Girlfriend to whom I can talk and share my thoughts and who doesn't feel uneasy to listen and judge me Because She can definitely make me better person ( at time i am not into romantic stuff because for me love is a very broad term ) At the same time I can't just simply go to a random girl and ask her to be by Girlfriend .... I also know about personal space so I don't talk to girls generally as long as there isn't a necessity and that time comes after months .... I sit with my friends who are Males ...and I feel that they will not judge me because they share the same Feeling as I do .... And then we have strict lecture timings you can't even get 5 minutes to talk somebody......

I was lucky enough to grow up abroad, study at a school where there was no segregation, where we had healthy relationships with everyone. We never saw each other's genders, we saw them as peers. Unfortunately this doesn't mean much when people see me as the stereotypical indian man until they interact with me. I've thought about why and have had many debates with my friends who actually conform to the stereotype; the silver lining is I've been able to make them understand why it's not okay to stare, teach them about personal space. Some grow, some wilt. But hey, one better person is better than none.

Let me tell you all about an interesting case [Delhi] Till 9th the gender ratio in our class used to be around 3:7 in some it was 1:3 as girls : boys Our school used to allot us sections on random basis maybe on names or what I don't know But in 10th our schools used to select top 45 students based on 9th results and allot them section A , other 3 sections were alloted on random basis to rest of other students Now in these 45 students the twist is that 23 were girls and 22 were boys for the first time we boys were like used have 1.5 rows and 2.5 for girls Our class teacher was a lady a strict and old teacher initially she wanted us to sit according to our own preferences she was a hindi teacher But soon she realized the Coordination of class is not much good she made a rule that on 1 desk one should be boy and other girl Don't know but that 1 year was different we boys were in minority our class were mainly lead by girls but I think it taught us to respect each other Earlier we used to avoid girls and no boy used to sit with girls but now it was like compulsory and children started feeling no shame in sitting with girls

This is a necessity, must be done more often from early school age. So that when they step in college and taste freedom for 1st time , they don’t get haywire. Also it will help us look at females with less positive biased , rather that in present time If you are a female, you are by default innocent and victim. We need to understand that females are a complete human too with equally evil intentions and capable of committing crimes as equal to male counterparts.

a few months ago, i happened to visit my girlfriend at her rented apartment and while leaving i just side hugged her once. In a few mins she got a call from the society secretary to avoid doing “modern” things in public because “respected people” live in that society!!! He also messaged her a screenshot of the cctv footage of me hugging her. 😅

The only way to overcome such a problem is by promoting interaction between opposite sex in schools I have always been in a co-ed school till 10th grade and we were always made to sit with the opposite sex so that we can be comfortable with each other but in 11th-12th the school was co-ed but the students came from rural background who have always been in either same sex school or had negligible interation with the opposite gender and I have observed that me and my 10th school friends were able to communicate more freely without being shy or awkward with opposite sex but those people from sex-segregated background were usually very uncomfortable and awkward in even talking or being close friends with them.

this is a real issue and needs to be fixed. we are a social creatures and having no interaction with the opposite gender starts affecting in our later stages of life. i also had no female interactions till my 11th grade, i just never thought that i would have any need of talking or making friends with them and the society dont even teach or guide you in this regard. and suddenly when you come at the age of marriage they expect you to talk and develop a connection with a random girl that they selected.

As a teenager I can totally relate with this video I am in 9th grade . I want to share one of my story this year I played holi with my classmates and clicked some pictures I showed that pictures to my mother and she litterly shouted on me she told me stay away from boys they are not good 😐 I don't why we are taught that boys and girls are equal when we cannot do anything like that

Thanks Mohak for creating this video. The stories you have shared are very relatable and I too have often wondered why Indian men (even educated ones) engage in uch sleazy behaviours. Where I mostly agree with your rationale and belive we shouldnt generalize but I I don't agree that we should blame society alone and not the men. Even though our social setup has a role to play, we should all at least as adults use our sense of right and wrongwhile behaving. I think it would be safe to say thatmen who take pictures through peephole, kidnap girls know that what they are doing is wrong.

Can relate so much. I've faced weirdass stupidity in school and coaching centres as well. Basic interactions with a female lead to weird looks and then taunts like "aur bhai kaesi hai nayi gf." Again, the schooling system and society are largely responsible for this. Most schools teach kids from a very young age to sit on different benches from girls and interaction is limited in colleges too where there are completely different buildings from boys and girls. Moreover, any romantic relationships between students are suppressed. They don't understand that teens and youngsters need this stuff to balance out their youth or otherwise they'll start looking at the opposite gender as some sort of object of novelty. Older bollywood movies and today's SouthIndian movies don't help either.

Even though my school presented itself as a coed school, there were separate classroom for boys and girls from 5th grade. The teachers as well as my parents didn't allow any kind of interaction between boys and girls and saw it negatively. It really had a tremendous effect on me as it made me awkward and anxious around girls and it made it hard for me to approach and start a conversation with a girl. our school and society needs to encourage healthy interactions between boys and girls from an early age to prevent this.
