So I would say, at 45watts (ultra 7's max tdp) if optimized correctly, can outperform ally at 30watts (z1 extreme's last tdp that gives any significant boost, after this tdp it's almost useless using any higher wattage) by 5-10 fps maybe?

@@hoanghg88 As the demand for a technology increases, especially a niche technology like the parts to handheld gaming consoles, it becomes cheaper to manufacture and therefore the wholesale cost gets lower. A company can either enjoy a higher margin on their goods OR keep a similar percentage of profit and lower the costs of the hardware with the price of the components. Sure, a PC gaming company can be greedy and laugh heartily as they know they're taking us to the cleaners every time we buy their product OR to sell more of said product than their competitor, they lower the MSRP.

Design wise it looks like the Ally, but has a significantly bigger battery, better control sensors, and cooling. So this is basically an upgraded Ally.

Dave2D did a comparison between the Ally at 25W and Claw at 30W and 720p for 4 titles. The two were basically identical with the Claw being maybe 5% faster.

Regardless of whether this one lives up to initial hype or not, it is definitely a good thing to see another mainstream manufacturer having a try at a handheld pc, so much easier for more people to consider them when they can see them at a local electronics retailer rather than simply relying on reviews online, especially now their igpus are within touching distance of the entry-level dgpus too.

I think it looks pretty good and I'm happy to see someone other than AMD entering the space. I do already own an Ally & Steam Deck so I just don't think there's any reason for me to pick one up. I do hope it does really well though and that Intel and AMD can start some heavy competition in the handheld PC space. That would be fantastic for us as consumers.

I was about to post this; I have an Ally and Deck, and see no real reason to buy another handheld right now. But I do hope that more manufacturers come in and that the chipsets diversify. If something amazing were to come along, such as a (for handheld) high-level Nvidia RT Portable, then I would jump again and buy it. And who knows? Feels a little bit like the Wild West Console Days of the 3DO/Jaguar/CDi/Playstation/Saturn in this current portable space where another competitor hits the market every few months; Intel jumping in is diversifying the chipsets, and just might push Nvidia to do something (other than Switch).

​@@Charlii931603 Need's definitely not the right word but in their stock configuration however they offer different things and that's why I bought both. Steam Deck is a Steam OS device and I love it for that. I have no desire to dual boot Windows on it but I do play a lot of PC Game Pass games which don't work on Linux so the Ally is good for that as well as anything that could use the extra power, though that's not something I need often. Overall I prefer to use the Steam Deck by a wide margin, and if I couldn't afford both and had to choose one it would be the Deck, but there are some things you can't do on Steam OS so I have both. But since I already have a Windows handheld and the Claw doesn't really offer anything unique there's really not any motivation for me to pick it up unless I just wanted to try out the Intel hardware for myself which I'm not super interested in.

Some synthetic benchmarks and a chart comparing the results with the Steam Deck and the Asus Rog Ally would be nice. Also some GNU/Linux benchmarks that seems to perform better in most games now, even with wine.

@@CrocoDylianVT You are right, BUT sometimes you have to shrink the information, and better have something to compare than nothing. Of course a geometrical average, an average, and reporting in how many games is better at 1080p low / high settings, 1440p low/high and 4k low/high, even 720p low/high settings in this case, being handhelds would be better, and even better a chart with all the results, and taking one, perhaps the Steam Deck "original drivers" as base 100, as drivers evolve too.

As someone who plays AAA titles on the go I’m pray games like cp77, BG3 and few others will perform well. They don’t have to be 60 fps but atleast well and smooth enough for me to greatly enjoy. I see no upside to choosing this over the AMD powered rivals. Higher wattage (35w vs 30W) to get similar framerates and Intels somewhat inferior drivers,especially for older games running on earlier Direct X versions.

If you want to more closely simulate the 16GB of RAM, just use RAM Disk software to lock out half of the soldered RAM so the OS only has access to 16GB.

The frames seem reasonably high, however... 1. 35W seems like a lot for a handheld. It does look like the cooling is holding up reasonably well, but I am curious to see long term testing and if it can keep it up over sustained periods of time. 2. Those frame jumps are a little concerning. Doesn't seem like the frames are all that stable.

Edit: It came to my attention that ETA Prime sometimes uses upscaling without disclosing it, read the comments bellow to see some examples. Because of that I can't really stand for the numbers I have written here and I'm keeping it up just as warning to others. While I still assume based on other benchmarks and numbers that 7 155H will underperform for handhelds, I can't really use these numbers to prove my point. Original comment: Comparing this with your benchmarks for Legion Go and Ally it's looking like quite a disappointment. I haven't went over all the old videos but from what I could quickly find, here's small comparison. Forza Horizon on Legion Go: 1200p, medium settings, cca 95 FPS, 20W for APU Forza Horizon on Ally: 1080p, medium settings, cca 85 FPS, 15W for APU Forza Horizon on Claw: 1080p, medium settings, XeSS Balanced, cca 90 FPS, 35W for APU Cyberpunk 2077 on Legion Go: 1080p, low settings, FSR performance, cca 75 FPS, 30W for APU Cyberpunk 2077 on Claw: 1080p, low settings, XeSS performance, cca 50 FPS, 35W for APU Ratchet and Clunk on Legion Go: 800p, low settings, cca 70 FPS, 20W for APU Ratchet and Clunk on Claw: 1080p, low settings, XeSS performance, cca 55 FPS, 35W for APU Claw and 155H... Got my fingers burnt with a faulty MSI gaming laptop 18 months ago. In Europe their customer service team is based in Poland and they were horrendous. They couldn’t fix, offered me a lower spec laptop and refused to refund me. Only after the threat of legal action from my lawyer was i refunded; 7 months later! Never again will I purchase an MSI product. Still, every cloud has a silver lining as I bought a Steam Deck after that debacle and couldn’t be happier.

Run "System Configuration" from Windows and in Advanced options in Boot you can limit the memory down from 32 to 16. Reboot and the PC will only use 16gb.👍

GPD needs to base a Pocket 4 on this chip. Hopefully with Thunderbolt, an alt mode capable USB-C, A couple of USB-A and an oculink. Preferably with some sort of hard mount for external displays on all sides of the integrated display so that I could carry a tripple monitor 1920x1200 setup in a couple of coat or cargo shorts pockets depending on the weather. Dockable gaming controls in the style of the switch or Lenovo Legion GO would be brilliant.

Yeah sadly it doesn't go lower than 15w. At idle and not in game, it can drop battery percentage pretty quickly. I noticed that in a recent video when someone was showing it off at CES while just scrolling threw the interface.

I don't think I will upgrade. Between Ally and OLED SD, I think I'm good until there's a major improvement. Maybe when gen 2 handhelds get released. Right now they're basically the same. My ultimate handheld would have hall effect sticks and triggers, oled 120hz VRR screen, backlit menu buttons, good performance and great battery life. Not a single one has all of those features yet. If I could take best things and merge Oled SD with Ally, I think that would be pretty close to perfect.

After using a 1165g7 based handheld, there are a lot of issues with intel's drivers and power optimization. I don't think that has changed. The steam deck automatically meets demand, giving better battery life than any other device. Every windows device you have to adjust profiles to every single game to get something similar, and even then it falls short. The only use case for these other devices is at high power, which kind of kills the purpose of a portable.

53Wh battery for 2 hours means running a 26.5w for whole system. Since we know the screen fans other components draw about 8-10w, that apu has around 16-18w to run. Therefore the 2 hours scenario should add the term “up to”, and I think it is based on core ultra is not suggested run below 15w, according to those 155h laptop reviews show if it run below 15w, it is totally a mess in gaming. Hope that there will be game testing with ALLY and Legion Go side by side in low wattage soon.

Checking your review of Rog Ally, it was running FH at steady 80 FPS with only 15W for CPU package. Same resolution, same MED settings and no FSR (at least you did not mentioned it). When you turned Turbo mode on, for CPU to use 30W, it was somewhere around 100FPS, Still without FSR. So with that, you can get even more? Looks to me AMD has the edge here.

The way it stands, this is gonna have pretty terrible battery life, considering it can't reach the maximum GPU frequency even closely at 35W. And they even use an H-series CPU to be able to compete with AMD's U-series.

Please start including competitor FPS in your game tests. Would be super useful. Just a small block in the top right that has the FPS of the ROG Ally for each game would be extremely useful. As it stands across your videos, I find it really hard to use your metrics as a comparison point. I have to find the video for the other device and seek the exact same game, pause both videos, and compare. This is impossible on mobile too.

These handheld gaming devices are pretty cool. I'm glad that Intel finally is releasing a good apu alternative. I want this battle to trickle to other tech. I'm hoping that amd's Monopoly on the main consoles can be broken. I pretty much blame them for the problems we're having with PC games right now. I want a console system with Nvidia or ARC. NVIDIA preferably but I doubt that will happen since they couldn't aquire ARM. Which they should have been allowed. I'd be happy with ARC if they can be competitive on performance.

Is it possible for you to check the PCIe generation of the M.2 and USB4 ports? In HWiNFO, the Bus tree diagram will have that info; unfortunately you just have to try and find it manually.

35 watts for just the cpu package not including the screen, rgb lighting, fans etc. More like 45 watts. And the battery is only 20% bigger than the Rog Ally battery. They will probably have about the same battery life.

from what i remember the ally ran cyber punk with better fps at same settings and honestly igpus utilize the ram alot and the claw will have half the ram of said laptop.this might just turn into a buy if ur an intel fan but otherwise it seems less performing..

MSI Claw somehow still stuck in GTX 1050-1650 performance range (depend on TDP), I picked the regular ROG Ally and thinking not upgrading until iGPU market reach power range of at least 2060-2070, which is more worthy to spend budget later on

Meteor Lake does not even use hardware for XeSS... It does not support XMX... It only support DP4 version of XeSS which same as the one used for nvidia and AMD GPU... In other words, FSR should still perform better on Core Ultra 7 than XeSS, but XeSS might have slightly better image on same mode.

Why do these handhelds keep coming with only 16gb of total system ram? Some games by themselves take up to 16gb of ram. Pair that with an APU where it needs to be split up between the vram and system and you’re bound to have issues. I could understand 16gb of ram for something like the steamdeck, it’s cheaper starting at $350-400 and runs its own lightweight operating system, then you get these systems that start at $500-600 at minimum running windows and a high resolution screen with no easy way to upgrade past 16gb of ram. I think it would be more than passable with 24gb for the forceable future, but for now I’m gonna wait.

I’ve currently got the steam deck and ally to cover all my blind spots. Even if the claw is 10% better I can’t say that justifies a purchase from me. The next one for me will probably be the ally 2, shucks maybe even the steam deck 2 if they up the performance. Nonetheless love to see competition, claw 2 could be a banger too. Or would it be called CLAWS 🤷🏻‍♂️

What id like to know is, is it, at present, performing better than the ROG ally? I can still return my ally so id like to know. I do prefer MSI as a brand more than asus. However i did buy the rog ally really cheap. Got 200$ off due to black friday sale plus an additional 100$ since it was open box at best buy (Canadian price msrp of new unit is $899.99) so paying 600$ plus tax was a steal.

I would keep the rog ally, meteor lake's power efficiency is looking really horrible. The meteor lake APU can technically beat the z1 extreme in gaming, but it requires a ton of wattage

Games to test on the claw: Marvels GotG Hogwarts Legacy MW3 Cyberpunk 2077 Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League If it can run those well then I’ll be convinced it’ll run lots of new games well Older games to test: Crysis (original) I think taking a look at an older game that made higher end PCs struggle at the time of release will show how well intel has managed to improve performance on older games

Well did you go for the Go over the Ally because of the screen size? Otherwise the ally and Go perform the same, and the Claw is a black version of the Ally with an Intel chip.

Legion Go is the most powerful of all because it has faster ram read speed to push extra fps
