Handheld PCs had been around for years beforehand from vendors like GPD (hell, Linus has covered several of them in the past on the main LTT channel), but honestly the tech simply wasn't up to par for the most part to do any kind of real gaming other than light emulation. I will give the Steam Deck props for bringing them into the mainstream though.

The Switch has practically no GPU power and is locked to Nintendo and low graphics games basically, while these handheld PC's can play basically anything AND act like your full PC as it runs win11.

Hand helds started competing with laptops and were falling short. Now the systems are powerful enough that they can function as full computers. Steam also means that they aren't limited to the limited title selection.

Most of the others have a usb 4 port which has tb4 too and in my experience works fine with tb4 egpu docks, although for my legion go i ended up going with occulink because it's faster and it's pretty easy to boot from an m.2 in a thunderbolt adapter instead of the main ssd

One thing you might update is the reasoning for recommending the middle one. 50$ for the jump from 512 to 1tb is pretty reasonable, the small ssds still haven't really materialised in the same cheap and available manner as the large ones and unless you already have a 1 tb lying around you'll definitely pay more than 50$ for that (of course you'll also have a 512 in the upgrade mix to add to that value and in my eyes 512 is totally enough on these, especially when you add in a micro ssd and offload some of the lighter indie games)

Does the screen support VRR? If not that seems like a good advantage to the Ally still. I will say I am pretty intrigued, but I need to see performance numbers before I decide if I want to upgrade my Ally or not. And then there are the upcoming Ayaneo devices to consider, the Emulation enthusiast in me is SEVERELY tempted by the Flip DS with the new Ryzen 8000 mobile chips and that secondary display would make it perfect for DS and 3DS emulation. So many choices in handhelds. Thanks Valve for showing there was a main stream market for these devices.

Coming from Razer Edge Pro 2013 with its big handheld, I can say Steam Deck and Lenovo GO are huge upgrades. Razer pro tablet came with WIndows out in 2013 and cost almost 1000 dollars for the Pro series. The battery life was about 4 hours on average, not sure why the battery can't last longer with these new devices. I still have my ancient pro and play it from time to time. I hope they find a way to optimize games to make the new handheld tablets last longer in terms of battery life.

Most of the 3rd party handhelds are missing on the input (the trackpads). I use them extremely often on my steamdeck - and would never buy a device without these.

@@1unar_eclipse The ROG Ally has Gyro control. The Ally's joystick-to-mouse implementation is also unbelievably good. I switched from the Steam Deck to the Ally and can say personally I absolutely hated the trackpads on the deck. Much prefer joystick and trigger for click control.

Probably because it’s expected and not really a bonus. Like it’s a standard feature on the amd side of handhelds to have the FSR suite (including FSR 3 frame gen in a couple months)

I’ve had me steam deck oled for a few weeks now and, while I don’t play anything like starfield on it, I’ve been getting 4+ hrs playing borderlands and with it at max setting I get 80 fps. Plus it doesn’t run windows!!

Definitely interested to see the thermal/fan noise in a full review. My Intel 13th gen laptop was horrible with heat and fan noise and it was just an i5. But this is a newer arch so maybe it's better at least.

I like that they're making some improvements over the Deck and others like the 1080p screen, newer (probably more powerful, who knows yet) processor, Hall Effect controls, etc. But MSI has a history of anti-consumer decisions with their products, so I am not as open to trusting MSI will do right by the user with the Claw.

Have I misunderstood how battery capacity/consumption is defined or those claims just aren't adding up? Also that's just the APU consumption isn't it? Adding the fans, SSD, network card, main board, RGB, and (non OLED) screen consumption, I would assume lower results yet.

But stuff like the Steam Deck that can go for under $350 and can play games like Balders Gate 3 or Hogwarts Legacy without the setting set to full potato mode like the Switch is going to be hard to beat. Been loving my Steam Deck, console experience without the walled garden experience you normally get with consoles. Edit: Well maybe not hard to beat, but there is a LOT of options now for a portable gaming handheld, not just the Switch.

It's not odd at all. What else are you gonna do, put a 4090 in it? Besides, a lot of budget ballers use integrated graphics whether its intel or AMD just because it's cheap, and on this line-up of chips, which arn't even made for normal PC's, the graphics hold up about as well as a low-midrange GPU in 1080p.

This is still considerably shorter than the respective 2h and 8h claims.

The modularity of this thing is nice to see. Too soon to tell, but the performance and battery life seem really impressive. If it had touch pads like the deck I think it could be a contender for the top spot. That said, using windows on a handheld is kinda like pulling teeth. I'm curious if MSI can come up with a solution better than the ROG Ally did. I hated that thing.

For me both a sim slot and oculink port are a must to me for a hand held. I know the GPD win mini can use a sim card but its using the sim adapter for the GPD WIN 4 (name might be wrong but its the one with the side kick style sliding keyboard). If the updated 2024 model works well with sim card AND continues to have oculink (not shre why theyd drop it) i will buy one. Both as a phonr and a PC repalcement.

I gotta say, buying a steam deck was one of the best choices I have made to date and it gets WAY more use than my wildly more powerful gaming PC. Seeing other companies just into the industry is a great to see.

I've been running MSI for years, from laptops to desktops. Im always happy with their products and customer service is great. The only thing i can say they need to fix is their software dragon center but everything else, products is top 😊

How about a carrying case for the extra screwdriver bits from the regular size screwdriver? The cardboard box the bits come in is trash
