Can Israel and Iran Step Back From the Brink? | Foreign Affairs Interview

On April 13, Iran did something it had never done before: it launched a direct attack on Israel from Iranian territory. As historic and spectacular as the attack was, Israel, the United States, and others managed to intercept a huge percentage of the drones and missiles fired, and the damage inflicted by Iranian strikes was minor. Still, the world is waiting tensely to see how Israel will respond-and whether the Middle East can avoid full-scale war.
To understand the attack and its consequences, Foreign Affairs Editor Daniel Kurtz-Phelan spoke with Suzanne Maloney, vice president and director of the Brookings Institution’s Foreign Policy program, and Ali Vaez, director of the Iran Project at the International Crisis Group.

during mohammad khatami presidency when he was looking for american cooperation for a moderate f policy , the delay in american response allowed the hardliners to show that a moderate f policy will not serve iran's interest.so, there had been a lack of diplomatic approach from time to time towards iran, only weakening the moderates voices inside iran.

Hamas and Hezbollah are Iran's allies, but their goals are not identical. If we want to pry them away from Iran, then we have to offer them some incentive to do so. If Israel were to dismantle its settlements and return to the 1967 borders, this would greatly decrease the anti-Israeli radicalism among Palestinians and Lebanese and reduce the appeal of Hamas and Hezbollah.

Suzanne Maloney takes a clear position against Iran, which makes her less of an analyst and more a propagandist. Ali Vaez analyses things from both sides' perspectives and is more informative and sensible.
