I suspect it wasn't as funny at the time, however. Either way, it was good to see because it shows that you're a normal couple and will have tiny little disagreements every now and again. Kudos to you for jumping in and doing things that you're not familiar with normally. That being said however, use this as leverage and have Ray make it up to you by taking you out for a dinner date to a fine restaurant.

You need what my dad had at his shop back in the 80's. He had a winch mounted on the wall inside his bay so he could winch dead vehicles into the bay. He'd connect multiple tow straps to the cars that were further out in to the parking lot and take them off as it got closer to the bay.

Ray, speaking from experience, and many years older than you, I have spent my life 50% over-reacting and 50% apologizing. When dealing with the wife unit, it is important to remember that she is just doing the best that she can. Any mistakes are 100% unintentional. Make it right with her. Apologize to her on camera for all the viewers to see. It’s embarrassing to chewed out in front of a crowd by the one you love. (Not to mention 492,000 viewers). By the way, you are a great mechanic and I love starting my day watching your content.

Years ago my wife helped me tow a disabled vehicle and it did not go well. At first she was in the vehicle being towed and almost hit the vehicle I was driving because her vehicle's brakes didn't have power steering and it was too hard for her to apply the brakes. So we traded places and she tried driving the truck in front and nearly snapped the tow strap by taking off to quickly. It got intense but we got thru it, but neither one of us ever wants to go thru that again. Sorry you didn't enjoy it either Lauren, my wife watched the video and said that's exactly how it was for her. Guys get frustrated at times like this, we forget a lot of people haven't done it before.

Soldering aluminum wires: Soldering to aluminum is very difficult and quite different than soldering to copper or solder coated surfaces. The issue with aluminum is the oxide on the aluminum itself and it needs to be removed so the solder can make a electro-mechanical bond to the shield itself. In your case, a mechanical bond would be best used. Always nice to see Wife Unit. Treat her well and hire a shop helper or another mechanic. You might try your local trade schools.
@Usfwood
@Usfwood Жыл бұрын
I would imagine the wire was all copper. One was tin coated the other bare copper. Very compatible. I do not believe anyone would use aluminum wiring in automotive applications. The vibration would cause the wire to fail in a very short period. Pre-tinned copper strands is common and superior to bare copper stranded.

I tend to use the old pump harness to create an adapter (if factory wiring isn't corroded) if the replacement has a different connector. That way if it needs replaced again and the replacement is an OEM the wirings ready to go or adapted to the new connector. Also adds a bit of length for those that have just long enough wires.

Have you ever considered using a winch and some anchors for a snatch block to pull vehicles into the shop? Just a thought, keep up the good stuff and thanks for everything that goes into sharing it with everyone.

It doesn't really matter if the two sense wires are switched. It's just a variable resistor that doesn't mind the current flowing the other way. 😉

Nope. The circuit will be something like battery->gauge->white wire->level sensor (variable resistor)->ground. If you connect it as battery>gauge->white wire->ground then the gauge will display permanently either full or empty.

@@tonyjover resistance is the same either way. As the float arm moves up or down the resistance changes. GM uses a different standard than Ford or many other manufacturers. So he may realize soon that this GM fuel sender uses 0-90 ohms and the opposite is for Ford 73-10 ohms. When the tank is full, you will get 90 ohms on a GM and around 10 ohms on a Ford. Bottom line: the polarity of the wires doesn’t matter. The resistance is changed by the float rubbing on a wound spring like wire to change the resistance as it moves up or down.

Those self-sealing solder connectors are interesting, but old school "fixed pinball machines for 10 years" me will always hand solder a connection, and heat shrink over it. Have never had one fail on me.

Small point but wouldn’t it have been better to change the connector on the fuel pump itself rather than adapting the vehicle wiring to fit a non-standard pump? If the pump needs replacement in the future and a genuine part is fitted then the connector will need to be changed back to the original type and future-Ray or whoever will be cursing present-day-Ray’s decision to make the car fit the pump rather than the other way around…

Judging by the shape the van is in, cut the plug off the old pump, wire to new pump, send it on its way. Probably won't be on the road long enough to ever need a new pump again.
