There was a guy who used to live near me who followed your advice to the extreme. He had almost 60 1967-69 Camaros in various state of wreck and disrepair. He wouldn't sell even trivial parts from any one of them. His excuse? "I might need that someday." They eventually rotted to the ground and small trees grew up through them. At one point he could have restored at least a dozen into really nice cars.

I have to say to you Ray, when I was a kid many rotations of the earth ago, my dad told me to never throw nuts, bolts and other parts away. He said you never know when they will come in handy. I've done that now for may moons ( I'll be 74 in a few months). I have tubs of parts and they always come in handy on automotive work as well as other stuff. Love your content. Thanks man.

After your reno video I thought that you might be missing an opportunity. After you remove the vent hood I would urge you to place a roof vent fan near the ceiling in it's place. Heat rises and if you suck out all of the hot air through the roof it would make a significant difference in the overall air flow of the shop. The reason I suggested this is that the wiring is there AND the hole in the roof is already in that location.

That long support beam that runs along the driveshaft is called the "Power Plant Frame" and it helps to stiffen the car up and prevent the chassis from twisting under heavy acceleration. I love Miatas and have owned many in my life. They're a ton of fun to drive, and work on, even though my 6'3" 370lb fat butt doesn't fit well into them!

0:29 I'm so envious you got to hang with Mr Banks. 😖 Seriously, Ray. We've lost many greats lately (looking at you Ken Block) and Gale isn't getting any younger. I hope you cherished every moment. Man I hope the guys that are lucky enough to work with him and get yelled at every day for messing up are wise enough to cherish it too. So many of us have passions we didn't even know existed about automobiles, largely to G Banks and other guys like him that decided not to take any sh*t, pave their own way, tell more people than they'd ever care to admit to kiss off while they were in the process of achieving something. A true living legend! 👨🔧🏎️

It also would have been good practice for Ray because he still has to pull the engine out of the "good" Miata. Just speculating here but I think sometimes Ray does things the hack way for 'drama'. In my personal opinion I am here to see Ray do the professional stuff. Ray does "professional" MUCH better than he does "hack" whatever "drama" there is in everything he does because... Ray!

I bet I beat you in the stripping down department! I was working as a welder for a business buying trucks, newish and old and refurbishing, restructuring, repainting and generally making them look pretty and worthwhile again. Frequently with older semis that in their day were considered powerful but, as engine hp increased they were too slow for most businesses so in a lot of cases I'd use old chassis rails salvaged from other old trucks to extend the wheelbase then build a truck body and mount that on them and they were very popular with farmers. The one I'm talking about though, I had none of the fantastic power tools available now so EVERYTHING was done with whatever hand tools I took down to the other yard, an oxy cutting set and an old giant forklift that had been originally used on the docks to move shipping containers around. I didn't have much welding going on so they sent me down to completely strip absolutely everything useful off this old ERF cab over semi. I unbolted a lot with spanners and sockets but, mostly I carefully carved the heads off the bolts with the oxy then just knocked the stubs out and in a normal 8 hour day I had that thing with it's huge diesel engine and gearbox out, the bogey drive out and the chassis rails stripped ready to use to extend another truck in the future. I was told not to worry about the cab so after detaching every mounting and all wiring and everything else I just shoved one of those massive forks right through and plucked it off leaving all useful components separated and ready for use after whatever preparations. That time included loading up a truck with the gear and driving down there except for the monster forklift that was already down there for a different reason. So there, nah nah😛. Pretty sad to see that little Mazdabater as it looks like it's pretty new underneath there. Oh well, at least the recipient hopefully will have a low mileage, undamaged from either the accident or abusive driving that may have led to it's destruction.

I cut the roof off of my college car with a saw like that before junking it. The car was a 1981 Ratsun 210. It was rotted out and had a broken frame. I cut off the roof in the driveway and drove it for the summer as a convertible. I had to wipe the seats off after it rained. The crazy thing was that it never broke in two with a rusted unibody and the top removed. The engine and trans worked too until the day I dropped it at the junkyard. I tried to kill it and I couldn't. I even kept a screwdriver in the car in case I had to pull the plate and leave it at the side of the road.
