Can it be Hypothalamic Amenorrhea if You Don't Fit the Profile?

Just because you don't think that you fit the stereotypes for hypothalamic amenorrhea, that doesn't mean that it doesn't apply to you. Even if you are normal body weight, are not an elite athlete, don't have bone density issues, and don't have an eating disorder...you might still be suffering from HA. Getting it sorted is the first step to recovery, so don't miss this video if you are still unsure!

I lost my period smack in the middle of a normal BMI and just got it back well into the "overweight" BMI. Every doctor I saw told me it was impossible that I had HA because I was at a "normal" weight. But i was definitely underfueling! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

YES! This is actually quite common and it makes it so hard for us to get on the right track. Hope things are better now! XO

How much food were you eating during a normal weight?

This is so important! Thank you for this video❤️ For ages I questioned whether I actually had hypothalamic amenorrhea because I never fit the stereotype of athletic, underweight and I didn't think I had an eating disorder. Only recently did I finally realise that my eating patterns/attitudes towards food were unhealthy, and that my stress levels actually played a massive role in losing my period. This video is important, as people need to understand that anyone can lose their period and that it's crucial to get your period back, no matter your situation! Another great video❤️❤️❤️

Charlotte, YES! It really can happen to anyone. The good news is that since we got ourselves here, we can get ourselves out. I am so happy that you are headed in the right direction now! XO

Thank you so much for the great video, this is exactly what I needed to hear. I haven't had a period for nearly 3yrs. I don't exercise, I love rice and bread, I am a big eater but naturally thin, so even though my gyneocologist told me I had HA and osteopenia, it didn't really land in me. I found your videos recently and I am binge watching everyday! I love reading comments from other ladies, saying they've got periods back! it gives me hope! Thank you Jill xx

I’m currently about to be 36 years old and I’ve only had my period one time when I was 15. Most of my life I’ve been overweight but probably not properly nourished. I was never that active either and after countless tests I was never given any answers or suggestions as to how I can fix this. I’m certain there is a disruption in my communication system but up til this very moment I have felt so alone because most people cannot relate (or so I thought) thank you for continuing to provide this important education.

Great video Jill!! I’m really glad that you’ve chosen this topic: you not only demystify a lot about HA, but also bring up a very important point (if not the most important one): that we are all unique and so are our needs, so let’s give our bodies and health all the love and attention they deserve!

Thank you Mariana! We are all truly unique! But what we do have in common is the need to be good to ourselves and listen to our bodies :)

Jill! I can’t even begin to tell you how helpful your videos have been in my recovery process. I searched for years what was wrong with me and went to countless doctors. I’m not sure if I just wasn’t ready to hear the facts or if they didn’t know but I finally ovulated. I’ve been “all in” for 6 weeks and it’s been such a roller coaster. Thanks for all your videos and i will continue to watch because i know I’m just at the beginning. Much love your way! Keep doing what you’re doing my fellow athlete sister!

Every point mentioned was so valuable & relevant. Thank you. One other amenorrhea "criteria myth" I wound like to shed light on is the feeling that the symptoms haven't been present for long enough to justify seeking recovery. I have gone seven months without my period & this thought has been at the back of my mind since my diagnosis, as I assume it has for others. This was just a reminder that any amount of time struggling with this is valid.

YES! Well said! The criteria for HA or secondary amenorrhea is 3 consecutive months without a period so yes...any amount of time is valid!!

I am a chronic back pain patient. I had spinal fusion surgery L4-S1 9/2014 which was unsuccessful in helping with my daily pain I am disabled, and I miss my "old life" so very much!!! Being able to do exactly what I want to do without pain interfering with most every aspect of life. I depend on my husband for so much, so lucky to have that support system. I have not had a menses since early 2015 at the age of 37. I am not vegan or vegetarian, although I only eat chicken and fish by choice. Red meat makes me nauseated, medication related? I don't miss it! I did have one episode of very very heavy vaginal bleeding in mid 2015. I was going through a super tampon within a 1 hour period for 6-8 hours and was sent to the er by my gyn specialist. I am a nurse of 20 years, so I knew this was cause for concern and needed medical intervention. I had a normal vaginal/pelvic ultrasound with normal vaginal/uterine lining. My gyn, pain specialist, endocrinologist, and neurologist say my amenorrhea is due to pain and/or medication I take for my chronic pain... They all cannot say for sure. They pretty much throw their hands up? I did have an IUD (Mirena) placed by gyn to prevent hyperplasia (scar tissue) of the uterine lining due to lack of a menses. Im now 40 yrs old and have not had a menses for 3 years. My diet is not a factor in this per my physicians, they state this symptom is medical. Just wondering if anyone out there has similar problem?? I have lost 60 lbs in the past several years. I was 240lbs! (my heaviest) in 9/2014 at the time if my spinal surgery and now weighing 180-185lbs, loss due to portion control and cutting out sugary sodas and fruit drinks. I am unable to exercise due to pain, I do daily yoga in my bed. I have never been a thin person. Osteoporosis and increased risk of heart attack is a huge concern to me.

Hello Jill! :) is it true that women who suffer from HA(and I mean years) have low chances of getting pregnant in the future? Plus, is osteoporosis part of the plan too? I'm so afraid of not having babies one day and face osteoporosis in the future. Thank you for being so honest about this issue! xxx
@jillcolangelopsych
@jillcolangelopsych 6 жыл бұрын
Hello! Well, OK, I can not say with certainty that if you had HA and get your period back that you will or will not have fertility problems in the future. This is beyond my ability or expertise to predict. Osteoporosis, or at least osteopenia, is almost inevitable as time goes on and we don't get a period. Because nothing is certain and because there are wide ranges of possibility on all of these things for everyone, it is IMPERATIVE that we get a period. There are many other health implications that become an issue the longer we go without proper hormone functionality. it's a scary truth, but hopefully motivating. XO

acaseofthejills Thank you for your response! Indeed, it is so difficult to get hormones back to normal especially when I am trying to do it naturally (without the pill). I will never give up and I will continue to educate myself and others about this issue, like you! xoxo

You are better off trying to do this on your own. You will be changing thought process and habits, which is harder...but, more conducive to long-term success and real healing. Yes! Never give up!!

I don't know what to think because pretty much none of the indicators apply to me! I'm healthy, try to eat a MODERATELY low carb diet but cheat quite frequently, (I love food and am not extreme about my diet) only exercise a couple times a week and live a pretty sedentary lifestyle working from home. My hair and nails are strong. With HA I have a low sex drive but I'm single and not trying to get pregnant. Does it even matter that I don't have my period?

This channel is packed with the science on why it is 100% essential that you get a period. More recent videos will show you that no period = increased risk of bone loss, heart problems, and cognitive decline...among other things... More importantly, ask yourself why you would risk all of these things for a body shape/size. Here for questions if you need it!

Hi Jill, even when you have amenorrhea, you can still have discharge, which means you are ovulating. Right?
@jillcolangelopsych
@jillcolangelopsych 6 жыл бұрын
Unless you take an ovulation test and get a positive result, it would be impossible to be sure of what exactly is happening. I can say that in general, egg white cervical mucous (if this is the kind of discharge you are talking about) is a good sign that things are headed in the right direction, but again...this is NOT a definite and NOT concrete...

OMG JILL!!!!!! I just woke up this morning with a surprise! MY PERIOD! This is the first real period i've gotten in 3.5 years. Nobody knows about this so I don't know who to tell, but I feel like I should share this accomplishment and blessing with you, because I have been watching your videos for a while now. Thank you so much! I can't believe this day is happening. This is a bit TMI, but I literally just stared in disbelief at my bloody toilet paper for a minute.
