Recovery from Amenorrhea is Not Graceful

Why does it seem that everyone is handling this process with grace? Spoiler alert: we are NOT...AT ALL. Despite a positive attitude and loads of support, navigating moments that don't make us proud is inevitable. Yes, I am being honest and blunt about some of my dark moments. To the person who wrote the email that inspired this video: you are not alone.

I’ve watched all your videos on amenorrhea so many times - and I got my period back today!! I’m so so so happy, after five months of trying it finally came back!!! Didn’t come back until I cut out exercise completely (like 100% completely) and ate tons of carbs. Thank you sooo much for all the help! ❤️ I hope everyone else watching this gets theirs back soon!

For those of us who recovered a while ago now, it's good to remember these details and see how far we've come. I remember the feelings of 'it's not fair, why me?' vividly... even now with the low bone density I have to live with I still feel like that sometimes, but mostly I try to accept it as it wouldn't do me any good to feel that way forever. And I've learned so much and grown mentally as a result of this experience, that I'm actually kind of grateful for it in many ways.

The part where you said that you felt guilty about obsessing and feeling ashamed over something that was such a 'first world' problem and actually came from a background of privilege, could NOT have explained it in any other or better words! this is exactly how i feel sometimes. i know that people out there cannot afford to think the way i do about food or weight because food or rather, eating too much food is not something they have to deal with as they do not have enough of it already! but i know that thinking this way is human and it is my moral compass kicking me in the butt for "being a baby". nevertheless, it is good to know that it is not just me who felt that! thank you so much for this channel and your sharing thoughts in these videos.

Great video. Just found your channel and im really enjoying your discussions. I began working seriously on recovery just recently - Oct 2017. Recovering from 12 years of amenorrhea due to extremely restrictive diet and compulsive over exercise (which also lead me to develop osteoporosis at 36). Aside from getting in a physically healthier state, the emotion/mental side sucks. Not fitting into my tiny sizes anymore and guilt when i over hear others discuss their gym plans. I was always the gym-rat, motivating people around me with my dedication. I dont want to lose that but i do need to get myself together. I look back and ive missed out on so much of life by being consumed with striving for perfection. Thanks for the honest conversations.

It's my pleasure Ange! Of course, I empathize with everything you've said. What has helped me is to think about the things that I don't want to let go of and try to discover the meaning behind it. For example: I don't want to let go of being fit. The meaning is: I feel that I am not valuable unless I am fit. Which means that: I need to work on believing in my intrinsic value no matter what my fitness level. It can be a beautiful process of discovering your self worth and what you may have been ignoring about yourself for some time! It's time to uncover how amazing you REALLY are!!

I just found your account. THANK YOU for sharing all this information. I'm on my way slowly recovering from ED but people they don't believe me when I tell them about water gain or my hormones not working and so on. I've been doubting myself and my mind, but now I know that is not all in my head

Thank you so much for your vulnerability. This is encouraging for me! I have had these same thoughts and shame. And I still don't fully understand. But I have faith that God will restore and heal. It's been 10 years that I've battled Amenorrhea. Thanks for being a partner if GRACE. :)

Thank you so much for this post! I am a natural bodybuilding figure competitor, former marathon runner/Triathlete, I am feeling these exact feels. I started my off season Mid-may 2019 and I am in the process of Amenorrhea recovery. My coach and my natural female bodybuilding competitor community is amazing support but your channel is also a major help. PS. (regarding a different post) thank you for telling me, finally, why i was sweating so much at night when no one else knew at all! It is a relief to know that I am not going through this all alone! THANK YOU!

Erin Hamel .... Hey Erin, I am a competitor as well and have had amenorrhea for about a year and a half now and I was wondering what other symptoms you had and if you still compete? I love the sport but fear for my health.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I haven't had periods for almost 3 years. I was told that I have HA about a year ago, so since then I put on about 6kg, then nothing has happened, I still had no periods 4-5 months after I'd put on the weight, it was frustrating for me and I felt quite impatient at that time... And I lost a member of family recently and lost 3kg... I am confused to be honest, I have never been a gym bunny or a runner, I have always eaten lots of carbs like rice and noodles. Like Jill said in this video, I feel 'Why me?? It's not fair'... but it does get better, doesn't it??? xx

Thank u jill. The mashpotatoes olive oil recipe u recommend is helping me alot. Am a bit worried because i have developed gastroparesis symtoms with my overtraining. Ive been into bodybuilding for 6 years trying to learn and i over did it. My question is can gastroparesis happen with metobolic damage. Thank u
@jillcolangelopsych
@jillcolangelopsych 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Gumel, so sorry for the delayed reply. I am not a doctor, of course, but I can say that there is definitely a connection between gastroparesis and what you describe here as "metabolic damage" (which, is due to inadequate fueling). It's definitely not my place to explain the how or why...I would seek the advice of a qualified health practitioner to get the answers you need. However, I can say that most people see relief of symptoms when they eat more...which is probably what you need to do anyway for recovery :) Best of luck to you!!
