@nekite1 Жыл бұрын
@@ryanwilliams6526 I agree - they can be a real pain if they get clogged. The Italian tune-up method works well, as it allows the DPF to heat up and properly burn off all the crap. I've driven diesel cars for about 15 years, but got tired of fixing the errors around the whole emissions system. Back to driving a naturally aspirated petrol engine now.
@aaaabababa Жыл бұрын
@@ryanwilliams6526 honestly, no, dpf's are waaaaaay less of a pain in the ass than EGR Systems, this comes from someone who exclusively works on diesels, we rarely get clogged DPF's, but we see clogged intakes and EGR systems all the time.
@ryanwilliams6526 Жыл бұрын
@@aaaabababa That's a fair point. It's just that, in my experience, EGR valves aren't usually too bad of a job to clean or replace when they become clogged, but DPFs are a lot bigger of a job. Also, it means that you can't really have a diesel if you do short journeys anymore, as it will certainly get clogged. I fail to see the environmental benefits of DPFs too, since all they do is collect up the harmful particles, and then waste tons of diesel getting the engine hot, just to release them all straight into the environment anyway.

I had a Zafira turbo diesel run away on me once, when the turbo oil seals failed... it was indeed quite frightening at first but I was able to drop it in to top gear, drop the clutch and stand hard on the brakes, which killed it. Then there was just the matter of waiting 2 hours to recover me from just outside Basingstoke. Fortunately it was a company car, and was soon fixed, and eventually racked up 250k miles before being sold!

You shaking the Berlingo to mix the magic juice with the diesel reminded me of an anecdote I once heard when working for major oil company, then one of The Seven Sisters. They'd had a substantial order for a particular blend of oil, but the blending machine was out of order. So they put the ingredients in the right quantities in a tank truck and drove it a few times round the refinery to blend it, then delivered it to the customer. I can not guarantee that it was a true story, but I could well imagine that it was.

Another anecdote, same oil company as above, but no longer related to this video: They once built a refinery that had one single access road, somewhere in Greece. With a railway bridge over the access road. All went well until the first tanker came to pick up its load. But it would not fit under the railway bridge. So they had to dig out the road under the railway bridge before they could ship products from the refinery.

It worked so well that I did not change the injectors and since then put some in my four year old Mitsubishi L200 (which did not blow smoke) but it improved the running so much that I use it every ten tanks or so, the engine runs smoother and quieter using it, I have since used it on a chinese generator set that was blowing black smoke from new and it stopped that as well. Hi HubNut, I watched this video after causing engine runaway to my 2012 Volkswagen diesel Caddy by pouring way too much EGR cleaner into the intake at once. It was so scary. I wanted to chunder from anxiety! Watching your video while I left the car idle for 20 mins to slowly (and safely!) chug through the remaining liquid gave me some relief knowing I didn't have a unique experience... and after resetting the battery and leaving the car overnight, this morning I drove it with no engine light or limp mode! Lots of horrible smoke from the exhaust came out which I was quite chuffed to see, as I was quoted AUD$1200 to have the EGR replaced which I really wanted to avoid. Loved your video and your humour. I will be sure to add it to the cleaner fuel tank after my next oil change like you have in your follow-up video. Thank you! From Australia 😄

Sounds like the egr valve was either stuck partially open or wasn't fully closing, so introducing exhaust gas to the inlet when it shouldn't! I can strongly recommend a diesel engine cleaner, JLM extreme clean. Use that every 6 months and it will clean and prevent accumulation of carbon and fuel residue throughout the intake, exhaust,fuel system and turbo, it really works well.

So a scary diesel runaway redline from death did the trick! What I suggest whilst you have the injector cleaner in, is to the drive Bella like you stole her, really redline the engine and get those revs up, because diesel is notorious for producing particulates Given the age of Bella, it's likely that carbon build up in the EGR, plus injectors being a little clogged too that the engine was starved of fuel and air meaning it was missing The injector cleaner will clean the injectors and also the combustion chambers too, you may experience additional black smoke whilst that is occurring, I would perform an additional EGR cleaning after the injector cleaning has occurred, to remove any additional deposits that may come from the combustion chambers But I'm glad Bella is better than ever, YAY FOR BELLA!! ❤

Some advice I found when I had my first Fiat Multipla diesel in 2002 was to drive the car like a petrol. Use plenty of revs setting off and always use the engine quite hard by making sure it revs. This beds the engine in better, protects the dual mass flywheel and does a better joke of keeping the EGR clear. So many people drive a diesel like a tractor, then complain when they have problems related with judder and poor breathing.

I suspect some of the issue is where the EGR meets the intake - all manner of goop in that area.
@Xyleksoll Жыл бұрын
The problem with the EGR on diesels is that the soot coming from the exhaust is mixed with the fine oil mist coming up the intake. This oil usually comes from the PCV - diesels have a lot of blowby that is returned in the intake airstream. Some have oil separators in the PCV, some don’t. Also, turbo seals might leak. Anyway, the oil mixed with soot makes for a nasty sludge that gets deposited on the EGR and in the intake.

I removed the EGR cooler and whole EGR system just a couple of days ago, because I had to do it to get access for changing the thermostat and water pump om my BMW. Took the opportunity to clean them and the intake pretty thoroughly with a vacuum cleaner and scraper tool. Didnt really make a difference that I could tell though, I think it wasnt all that bad beforehand, just a millimeter of carbon buildup along the edges or so. I guess some regular high speed autobahn driving and relatively low milage of the car was to my benefit.

You should always build your revs in a diesel, changing to fourth gear at 25 mph is your problem, especially with an already sooty intake. Take all the intake off as well as the egr valve & give it a good decoke as it'll just keep coming back
@HubNut Жыл бұрын
A diesel is meant to lug. These don't really like going beyond 3000rpm anyway. If they didn't think they should be pulling at 1500rpm, they could quite easily prevent them from doing so.
@zubeystinzen540 Жыл бұрын
@@HubNut yes I fully agree but this concept is challenged on your diesel engine because of the add on of the egr & also the dpf. These anti breathing systems choke a diesel engine & as such you have to find it's happy spot in its power band. Older diesel engines without a turbo are slow but have loads of torque, newer diesels with turbo's still have the torque but you have to be in the rev band for the turbo to operate, add the egr to the equation & you're using second hand dirty air that again operates at a certain rev band. Now,put the dpf on you need to operate at a higher rev band to generate the heat so the regen can perform. Constant driving at low revs is the best for mpg but you have to attain the speed first as you put undue stress on the cranks. Put all this with the way they build modern engines well it's a recipe for failure, especially with heat pressed cranks. They stopped making decent diesels in the late 90s IMHO 👍 Ps when a bureaucrat is telling us how to build engines we are doomed 😂

I still put a dose in my cars tank every now and again or when doing a long motorway run, probably no need these days what with modern petrol but old habits die hard.

I'm sure he would at least have stopped going into limp-home mode, which was positively embarrassing on a motorway or dual carriageway with a modest incline... and then he was a right bu**er, he would get up to over 80mph (130 Km/h) with gravity assistance on the down side beyond the crest of the hill...

What I found on an 02 belingo van (2 litre hdi), I had some time ago, was that the cheap diesel sold at supermarkets was extremely bad for the engine. Coked it up something awful. So I started using the 'supreme' diesel at other outlets. Yes, it's more expensive, but in the long run, the engine runs so much better and fuel consumption becomes so much better too. The 'supreme' diesel has cleaners in it. I recently bought an mpv similar in year to this vid. Now I alternate between adding a cleaner into the tank when I fill up and using the most expensive diesel at the pump (not at a supermarket). The car goes like a rocket. So the moral to this story is....... Fuel consumption is between 57 and 65 mpg locally. Not bad for an old car. And it's a 2 litre HDI.

At about the same time, I used some DPF cleaner/maintenance fluid in the fuel as I have no idea if my van ever does it's own DPF regens or not. It's like giving salbutamol to someone having an asthma attack!
