A follow up that addresses most of your comments about MAF, rpms, spraying far from turbine: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZ7MpZZ6aLRnosU Just to add to the video some afterthoughts. Yes, I did not have a helper to keep the rpms at ~1,500, so that could be a reason why it did not work. I did not think about it too much at the time, but probably should have had somebody to keep the rpms. It was not on purpose. It might have not worked on my particular engine, but it could work on yours. There might be several reasons, for example I had little carbon deposits, so it might not have been so effective, but if an EGR valve is quite blocked from carbon it might perform better. Another reason might be that my EGR is blocked and is simply shut constantly and I do not know about it, so nothing can go through it and hence the EGR valve was the same. I cannot do much about this, I have checked with Diagbox and it does not report problems, but you never know, the EGR valve might be faulty. So, take this video with a pinch of salt as it could well be that my experiment was wrong. Additionally, please do not use any sort of oven cleaner to clean the EGR valve, it is a bad advice that I have seen many times across youtube. The EGR valve is aluminium and most oven cleaners will have some combination of KOH or NaOH. KOH or NaOH will eat/dissolve the aluminium of the EGR valve and while it will look clean you may end up buying a new one. Any carb cleaner will do, but even better, use dishwashing liquid and an old toothbrush under the tap. Dishwashing liquid is a degreaser and will clean it safely! It IS opened on idle so it should go through, the problem is that the spray gets burned during the ignition cycle so nothing really "washes" the egr.. I broke down in my Golf 5 TDI yesterday. It cut out and wouldnt restart, right in the middle of Worcester at rush hour, so I was not very pleased as you can imagine. AA man came and started it with a squirt of Bradex Easy Start up the big plastic intake pipe after removing a clip to get access into the tube. It fired instantly. He said the stall problem was probably caused by EGR valve being stuck open/ shut. I took the EGR off this morning to find the whole of it full of carbon. I could not believe how much carbon was in there!!. Literally a cupped handful of sticky carbon. Cleaned it all out with a blade and a brake cleaner spray can. Put it all back together and the engine not only sounds quieter but it pulls very much more powerfully. My Golf 5 TDI 1.9 PD had covered 107k miles and wasnt slow by any means but now its very much more rapid and smooth. I am an old motor enthusiast and have been messing with petrol engines for years. I have never seen such a mess inside an engine intake system. I can hardly believe the engine worked at all. So if you have an oldish TDI, take off the EGR and clean it out. As this man says there is no way a spray of this EGR cleaner would have removed this sticky carbon muck. I reckon the diameter of the throat of the EGR was closed down by 30% of cross sectional area and the EGR valve which lifts up under vacuum was not working at all. It is now. Taking the EGR off is a bit of a pain in places but you must do it. Dave

They call it EGR cleaner because that's what you want, hence they will sell it. It's the same in the grocery store. They don't sell food, they sell what you want to buy. Great video. It's just so logical why this would never work, mainly due to the speed of flow that makes , and the absence of abrasive action. But to see it tested with detailed before&after images is still so valuable.

Amazing dedication. The OP went to an extent of doing a before and after. This is the kind of video I was looking for all these while. EGR cleaning is such an underrated process. More people should be aware of why it's done and how it affects the performance, especially on high mileage cars. I have a Ford 1.5 TDCI diesel FIGO. This car is sold in Asian markets but I have seen the similar engine being used in Fiesta in the West. The first GEN FIGO sold in India had the same engine configuration as shown in this video. But the second gen FIGO has EGR placed in the most awkward place. It's right in front of the firewall, under the wiper motor. I searched the entire KZbin for a proper EGR dismantling video for 1.5 TDCI engine but no luck so far. I have seen only two videos from Mexico but then I don't understand their language and those videos weren't clear - shot in poor light with shakiest camera work. Hope the OP would post a EGR dismantling video for FORD 1.5 TDCI engine. Some of us DIY-ers would greatly benefit from learning how to do EGR service at home. Especially figuring out where EGR cooler mounts are and how to reach them without dismounting the engine from the car.

And it seems quite impossible to be able to clean anything from the egr valve without taking it apart.

Cleaned up mine yesterday with a dedicated EGR cleaning product and I did the same test as you did. I can say that performing the light cleaning just by spraying the intake accomplishes nothing. I drove for 10min after spraying process at high revs and Before/After were identical. I performed a deep cleaning after with the same product spraying directly in the EGR and all carbon went away easily. It did its purpose, but had to be sprayed directly in the affected area. Thanks for the video!
@moremolecules9 ай бұрын
Absolutely right, the spray works when applied directly on the carbon deposits, no doubt about that, but somehow gets really either dilluted or burns in the combustion chamber and the cleaning properties are greatly diminished when it reaches the EGR.

I really really wished they had doe a half responsible job like a carb cleaner does on a Carburetor. I can handle manually cleaning the valve as part of a routine maintenance. But the idea of spraying IN BETWEEN SERVICES WOUD HAVE BEEN IDEAL. So I'll just add that task to the maintenance schedule.
@stuzbots-shed7 ай бұрын
Great video. I really appreciate just how much effort you went to, dismantling and re-assembling that part of the engine, to run this test with the EGR in situ and show real world "before and after". It would have been so much easier just to spray the removed EGR with the cleaner or do the test without removing the EGR and then claim the engine was running better [as most of the other videos do]. So kudos for going the extra mile [or kilometre!] to conduct a definitive test. Seeing the amount of effort people have to go through to clean removed EGR valves manually, I've always doubted a couple of squirts from an aerosol would do much at all and you've just proved my suspicions. Even if they did work, surely they'd just shift all the crap out of the EGR valve and into the intake manifold anyway? So "kicking the carbon down the road"... to coin a phrase.

@moremolecules Жыл бұрын
Good question, but I suspect car manufacturers are in the business of selling cars rather than making them in a way that they last forever and it is easier for the customer. Normally an EGR valve starts to give problems at ~60-70,000 miles, so probably quite opportune timing for buying a new car. A lot of people will be: "this car is starting to give me problems, need a new one". If it was easy to clean, people would keep their cars longer.

In the end I did a manual clean with break cleaner. Very messy job. As a follow up less than 3,000 miles later the EGR valve was stuck again and the car failed its MOT test on emissions. This time I fitted a new valve. they're not too expensive and the job took less than an hour. As opposed to 3 hours of mess. 🤔🤔

Yeah, I agree with you man...much better manual cleaning ... like I did in my car 💪💪💪
@paolozmmАй бұрын
Like you say it’s best to do it all manually. That stuff does actually work well if you take off the EGR and take out the gunk and then use the spray to remove the last of the gunk.
@slypig24 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the test, because any spray will be immediately drawn into the air intake manifold and the cylinders.

Just bought the spray, thought i'd use it like dismantle the egr, then spray.. it says dismantle the hose between throttle and turbo, there is a superschlauch that goes inside, turn on the engine, idle it, then hit the gas button (spray it).. i'll be glad if it cleans the intake + valves since you can always dismantle the egr manually..

Good luck with that.

Great job, Brother.. Thank you for taking the trouble to prove that EGR cleaner is a waste of money...😆

thanks for doing this, results are interesting can’t say i’m surprised. But i used this product on an 05 range rover sport expecting nothing to happen and immediately after i noticed improved throttle response and power delivery… question is what exactly did it do??? clean the injectors possibly? 🤔
@moremolecules5 ай бұрын
Difficult to tell, but it will be unlikely to be the injectors, if of course it was a spray into the air intake. The spray goes through the air intake valves and as it is not in the fuel it would not clean the injectors. It could well be that there was carbon (oil+dust) built up on the air intake and this cleaned it up a little bit, hence the improved engine performance.

This EGR is clean compared to VW's EGR. In cars in the range, EGR becomes clogged with gelatinous paste of oil and smoke. In your Peugeot, carbon is dry, meaning your engine burns very well. In the LM product it is specified that the engine must be kept at 2000 rpm and the spray period should be 2 - 3 seconds. Now my VW 2.0 tdi CR engine with more than 250 thousand km, makes figures periodically. I will test on VW but with another product from Liqui Molly. All good !

Actually you need to spray at the other end of the air hose nearer the turbo otherwise you've just cleaned the air pipes only. Mannol intake cleaner also works but nothing beats physical cleaning.
@moremolecules2 жыл бұрын
It does not matter where one sprays. It is not that it can go anywhere else. Everything will pool in the intercooler and some will go to the intake. Even if it evaporates the suction is towards the intake, so everything goes that way. I completely agree that nothing will beat the manual cleaning.

17:23 Spider walking down the pipe! On the lower right corner... 🙂 Tip: "glue" the gasket into the EGR body. i.e. a minimal amount of silicone gasket will hold it in place. To avoid the "blooper". ;-)
@moremolecules5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip with the silicone gasket. I will probably next time smear a little bit of greese on it to hold it in place.

Its amazing when I see the French cars egr removal and then I go remove it on my e46 and it’s as simple as taking the engine cover off, 2 screws for the hose and the intake on the egr and 4 on the egr itself, literally it all accessible too
@samwilliams684311 ай бұрын
Can you do a video on how to remove the egr? Step by step

I am not sure why it didnt work on this. But i can assure you guys .mine egr was very blocked ( even car gone to restricted mode ) RPM was not even going above 2000 rpm But after spraying this same company's spray car was completely normal . i didnt see from inside but it definitely worked . So you guys can try before spending moneys in garage

I have seen some videos where it is claimed the turbocharger is cleaned after spraying mr muscle or some other cleaner down the air intake. How the cleaner magically makes its way to the vanes I don't know. Another where this guy decided that he could flush out the EGR valve using DPF cleaner and proceeded to spray a litre or more of solution down the air intake with the engine running. Plenty people in the comments saying yeah, great, you are a genius mechanic etc etc.

I personally use a toothbrush and egr cleaner, when I come to cleaning my turbo I will be using cleaning products DIRECTLY onto the carbon and not believing the hype these companies like to push out, a little bit of effort and elbow grease always works better 😁
